Matt should run while he can. The gap between the BIG and SEC vs the mid 12 and others is going to get wide fast. Going to be hard to compete for players with the resources in Ames.

I don’t see him lasting the life of his contract. He was already their 10th option so they had almost no choice. But getting Iowa level results (which is what will happen) at PSU is unacceptable to them.
I don't agree. The players he recruited at Iowa State and the players he will have at Penn State aren't on the same stratosphere. He beat us regularly, unfortunately, with the scraps that were willing to go to Ames. He will do great at PSU and probably beat us every time we play them.

He was 3 - 6 against Kirk. See 2021 when they had "the TEAM" with Purdy and all and we wrecked their little celebration in Ames. He had a starting NFL QB on that team and lost to the poor lil Hawks with Spencer Petras in Iowa State's own house on one of the biggest days in their history

if campbell goes to isu i have to imagine psu’s 2026 class will be isu caliber. and isu’s class gets destroyed
two of our opponents thus get worse at the same time?
You’d think he bring least half of them. Has a ton of guys from Nebraska this year. I’m very intrigued to see who on current roster stays or goes with. Assume lot of Iowa natives stay put.

Great hire for PSU that their fans won’t like. But kudos to Matt Campbell for being the first ISU coach in quite some time to get out of Ames while he could.

I thought he was going to be yet another one to stay too long and become the villain in the Cyclones story.

Why would you assume that? You think kids are just going to commit because of the brand? Looks like 2 kids are committing because of the brand this season. PSU hasn’t been relevant for a national title in decades. It’s becoming the new Nebraska. The fact of the matter is he’s a coach who hasn’t coached a nationally relevant game in his career at a school that will put 10x more pressure on him to win than he’s ever had in his career.

He is obviously a very good coach. I bet he'll last quite a while at Penn State.

3-6 is not regularly lol. He did get 3 of the last 4, by very narrow margins.

I do agree he will win more games at PSU with their resources though. I think is ceiling is what Franklin was though.

Valid points.

I think he takes it for the following reasons:
  • Uncertain NIL/revenue-sharing money at ISU
  • Ability to compete at the highest level (every coach believes he is good enough)
  • Franklin got fired for being a jerk as much as losing big games. Campbell is much better at building relationships and program culture.
If Campbell is offered this job and doesn't take it, I don't see him ever leaving Ames.

I could also see this whole thing being a smokescreen for another candidate.
What are you talking about Franklin and Campbell are major douchebags. I hope he takes the job because it's going to end ugly for him and the pedophile University

I thought he did a good job getting the most out of ISU that he could. He made them relevant (at times) and somehow he was able to recruit some very talented players (Purdy and Becht come to mind).

Will be very interesting to see how many existing players and new recruits Campbell takes with him from ISU to PSU. The level of recruiting is obviously very different with PSU being used to top 10 classes. However, he has to rebuild now that Franklin left and is taking players with him. I'm guessing he only takes a few ISU players and then spends a lot of cash in the portal until he can re-establish recruiting. PSU will likely take a step backward for a couple years with how badly this whole process went.

I love it. I hope their program goes into turmoil for a good decade. Their 2026 season will definitely be a **** show.
They won’t have the revenue to keep up even in the crappy big 12. This is a glorious day. Clown U is definitely going to tank now. Love it.

It'll be interesting if it happens. Campbell is a coach who loves his platitudes... "winning in the margins" and "trust the process"... those types of things fly in Ames but I'll be interested to see how Penn St. fans respond if he starts slinging them. I'd anticipate a lot of eye rolls.

He beat us regularly? Why don’t you investigate things before you spew it. You just lost some credibility with me. You’re that kid who makes **** up. Camp was 3-6 against Iowa. Ding dong.

PSU was a missed fg away from being in the national championship game last year just about as relevant as you can get, actually.

Campbell will do well at PSU IMO. He's been pretty successful at recruiting, especially at QB and WR. His teams in the last few years have been talented. Recruiting to Ames and the B12 can't be that easy.

Someone was wondering if his assistants will go with him?

Unless one of them is approached by ISU about the Head Coaching position, then the likely answer will be “Coach, my bags are already packed”

It will be interesting to see how he does at PSU. Possibly like getting an indication of how KF might’ve done had he opted for greener pastures.

Although they are coaches with different styles.

Campbell at ISU: .567 win percentage
Ferentz at Iowa: .614 win percentage

Ferentz known for Strong Defense, Strong Special Teams, Strong Line Play

Campbell known for Strong Defense, and the ability to identify and develop underrated skill position players.

PSU was already getting good skill position players, so will he be able to make things even better on that front? I think he will but not by a very large margin.

On the other hand, line play was his weakness at ISU. Not sure what PSU was losing along the lines this year? But, he will inherit better line play than he had at ISU. Pending what happens in the portal after the announcement.

Does anyone know how many players PSU was expected to sign this year? I know they only had 2 commits left recently. But, were they looking at a small, medium, large class this year?

So it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out for sure.

#1 recruit from Iowa for the 2027 class recently committed to the Cyclones.

Will Slagle.

Important edit: I don't want to leave out the part where I mention his Dad and Uncle apparently played for Iowa State.
I feel bad for him.
