Brother Rice vs Mount Carmel

BRs D-line is outstanding. But MC might run the ball 8 times. Can BRs secondary cover Burrell, Thorton and Brown consistently? I like MC at home by 2 scores but they won't pull away until the end after BR is a bit gassed.
That will be the key. But if BR d line causes havoc like they've been doing, it will be a very interesting ball game. But I disagree on running the ball 8 times. The MC QB will have at least 10 attempts by himself in this game.

I think the secondary is solid. Isaac Saldana, #9, may be out for a while, but other players besides Harrington have been contributing. To name a few, Brandon Rogers and Cullen Winter, both juniors, came up with interceptions against Benet. Kemph, a transfer from IC, had one against Iggy. Harrington has three or four for the season, and I'm sure there are others. What's not to like?
the secondary is suspect. Weakest link on their defense.

The secondary, like the whole team, played as a unit in Friday's game. As one of the players said in a post-game interview, "We've been coming together a lot. We played as one, played as a team. We have a better bond, better chemistry."

Now, almost every player says something like this after a good win, but you could see it on the field. Everything had slowed down and been smoothed out. The secondary was relaxed and anticipating plays. This is a better team than it was in Ohio.

Benet is no good though.

You can talk about the incredible QB that Moeller has

but the week prior he was held to under 100 yards passing

the MC defensive play calling is where their issues stem from

I don’t know if BR has the offensive horses to get into a shootout; but they could try to bu

nickel and dime the clock with short yardage gains

I will for sure be watching this one
FWIW, since the opening game of the season, the Moeller quarterback has gone 103/137 for 1127 yards with 16 TD's and 1 INT. pretty impressive

That’s insane…

truthfully, everyone’s worst game tends to be the first of the season when it comes to mechanics and timing

A teams biggest difference of improvement is generally seen between weeks 1 and 2

A teams mindset heading into a game a big game while being the underdog is one of two ways

1 Oh **** this is a tough team

or

2 We want that smoke

Brother Rice is going into this with the latter, this is a can’t miss game

Rice overall is healthy - OSullivan the SR DE who missed last 2 games appears out for season. Feel for the kid. But others seem ok. I would say Rice needs to be able to pass the ball. I think last win at MC was Lausch's senior year

No, as McCaravan said, Rice will need, and be unable, to stop the the Caravan's passing attack. MC has the three best receivers and one of the best quarterbacks in the state. Dowling outplayed Matt Ponotoski in Ohio, and Panotoski is better than Gray. As the WizardofWoodlawn said, Rice will lose in a shootout by three touchdowns.

Let's say that the defenses are equal. Let's say that the secondaries are equal. That still leaves the imbalance between quarterbacks and the even greater disparity in receivers. Carmel's precision passing game will make chop suey out of Rice.

Hahahaa lynch vs Q. One has multiple state championships, the other can’t get out of the first round of the playoffs.

Didn't Q make it out of the first round his first year?

Rice and Loyola are the only two teams to compete with MC the last three years. MC handled BR in the playoffs one year but I think the 3 regular season games were close with Rice winning last year. I think MC is just that good and at home even better but I think it's the only test MC gets this year beside week one and whenever they play LWE.

Not sure MC and BR's defenses are equal I'd give the edge to BR there but MC's offense is much more established than BR's

We anticipate that the LWE - MC game will be week 2 when all of the teams with 2 losses battle the undefeated juggernaut's

I was impressed with Rice’s QB against Loyola. His passing is much improved over last year, and he is a very good runner. He will need to have a big game for Rice to win, and he is more than capable.

Okay, let's say that the quarterbacks are roughly equal (which I don't believe to be true). That still leaves a gap between the receivers, the best of which can make any quarterback better. This difference tilts the game in Carmel's favor.

MC's defense hasn't quite lived up to the hype, not yet. But they are starting to gel, as evidenced by the shutout at Benet. It's easy to dismiss Benet as a non-contender, but those who watched the Friday game saw a Carmel defense that was more aggressive, more explosive, more violent than earlier in the season. Some of the tackles reminded me of the way Steve Richardson played on the '12 and '13 championship teams. I attribute this evolution to coaching. Their physical skills have always been there, but someone on the coaching staff has dialed up their intensity, which should be enough to smother Rice,

While I'm sure they were disappointed that they lost to BR last season I think both teams know that outcome would have been different if MC had Jack Elliott playing. That's like beating the Bills without Josh Allen. So any revenge factor for last season is being overplayed and shouldn't be needed for a game like this. All three levels of both schools are 5-0. Should MC's Homecoming. Should be a great weekend of football

I think that the Brother Rice Defense has more sacks than MC

granted the level of competition has been vastly different

Was talking to somebody about this last evening. The three games even with the number of sophs on varsity would be three games worth watching. I wish they moved the frosh game to Thursday as I went to watch the Rita / Rice Frosh game on a Thursday a few years back and it was as good an atmosphere as most varsity games.

I do appreciate BR playing only varsity on Friday night and like giving frosh or sophs the Thursday night opportunity.

Silver, I don’t believe you’ve watched BR this season. Gray is one of the top QBs in the state. Army commit.

Dowling is throwing to one of the best WR cores in IHSA history.

Due to some crazy scheduling, that was the last regular season BR/MC game that was played at MC (I know the 22 quarterfinal was at MC) but the 22, 23, and 24 regular season was all at BR.

MC has been on the road for the last three games, making this a true homecoming. The atmosphere will be electric.

Long time scroller, first time poster

I will say that mt. Carmel has a home field advantage, but Brother rice is pretty hot right now, especially defensively, their front 4 is the best in state in my opinion, the secondary and the linebackers are lightning quick, but undersized at a few spots.
Mt. Carmel has a deathly passing game and a mean ground game that seems to be underrated to myself. MC dbs are better than rice receivers, and you can argue vice versa.
If rice can negate long plays, rice can win. But the dbs better make tackles on long sideline tackles.
Rice ain’t the favorite but man are they right there

Does anyone have information on MC and BR Special Teams? Game could come down to a FG in my opinion. Does each team have solid specialists who could nail a game winning kick or break open a game with a KR or PR?
