There are few terrors in sports quite like breaking the huddle (offense or defense) and not knowing the play or where to line up. Especially if the coach is a redass. I played the simplest position on defense in college a million years ago, and I almost felt bad for the offensive guys in practice when they didn't know the play.

Anyone else out there who has coached before that instantly thought, "why in the hell is a 7th grade coach using motion?" Good lord, most of the team would make that same mistake.

Our coach did when I was in Jr high

Edit: most of the time it was to change the play. For instance if we set up wing right and ran sweep right successfully 2 times in a row he would call wing right motion and we'd run sweep left. This kept the defense honest and unable to cheat over

Remembering the snap count was more of a problem than motion at that age

He's probably the son of a Jr High school teacher who they just need out of the play. Another solid C+ student pulling straight A's in Jr High, only to be a sold C student when he switches to high school.
