These games are a complete waste to revenue sources like concessions. No one will be here 2nd half. Plus no juice in the stadium. Maybe 30k in the stadium but looks more like 27k.

And not many on the concourses.

Wow I was way off
Maybe 25-30k in house

Yep, that was my estimate. The students did NOT turn out today. By the 4th quarter the stadium was empty. We stayed through the alma mater: really sad how few people were there.

At least it appears we did better than Maryland.... BIG10 game at home and 5-0, it looked worse than our game

Students have been great this year, but I don't understand this one

330 game
Rain cleared out by noon
Sunny by 1
Temps near 70
You're in school, and get in for free (or cheap)
College football

I know I'm old, but I cannot for the life of me get why, if you're a student at Rutgers, you weren't at the game yesterday. What the hell else is there to do as opposed to tailgating and attending a college fb game on your campus?

I get leaving by halftime, but not coming in at all? Baffles me

I'm baffled too, as I expected them to be there for the 1st half, like they were the prior games. This makes it in even clearer that we should not be playing these types of games anymore.

Why this wasn’t Homecoming is also baffling

No problem! Their attendance issues mystify me. They are coming off a bowl season, have a good QB and are entertaining.
Yeah, I meant attendance. Their announced was 39K if I recall.. and their stadium looked emptier than ours. But they are 5-0.

We would definitely have more butts in seats given the same scenario

I'm guessing it's traffic.. no one wants to deal with beltway traffic.. ever. Just watch on TV. Then you have the rep of Maryland fans in that stadium.. it is not good.

Rutgers is just nowhere near the stage of development needed to fill up a game vs Wagner... or any cupcake. Throw in the poor weather for tailgating and people, and even students, had better things to do on their Saturdays. That does not happen much at the 80K to 100K stadiums that always sell out because there is more demand for tickets.. ANY TICKETS.. than there are seats.

To assume that Rutgers could, or should, match that enthusiasm is just nonsense. That is the goal.. not the reality.

Yeah, that's what I was expecting, especially with the pizza promotion. I thought their section would fill up by the 2nd quarter and then empty out after halftime.

We never do these type of games for Homecoming nowadays; I think we always do a Big 10 game, it may be a league requirement.

I thought it was a league preference, not mandate

Truthfully I'm not sure. However, since we joined the Big 10, only one game (in 2015) has not been a Big 10 opponent, and that may have been previously scheduled:

Under Schiano
Michigan State 10/14/2023
Indiana 10/22/2022 W 24-17
Michigan State 10/09/2021 L 31-13
2020 Homecoming cancelled

Under Ash
Minnesota 10/19/2019 L 42-7
Northwestern 10/20/2018 L 18-15
Purdue 10/21/2017 W 14-12
Illinois 10/15/2016 L 24-7

Under Flood
Kansas 09/26/2015 W 27-14
Wisconsin 11/01/2014 L 37-0

I read somewhere that attendance has been declining everywhere except for a relative few schools. Don't recall if what I read speculated on potential reasons for that.

For me, I stopped going for several reasons. But two big reasons are (1) I hate sitting there waiting like corralled sheep during the way too numerous and long-running commercial breaks and (2) I hate all the crappy music blasting through the sound system every moment between all the plays.

#1 wouldn't be nearly so bad if #2 wasn't a thing. 'Cause then we could talk about the game w/our friends during the breaks. But in recent years, the sound system was cranked so high and always playing, so it was near impossible to talk without shouting at each other. That got old.

Even if my other reasons for not going were resolved, the combination of those two things would keep me away.

The 3:30 start didn't help. You basically had to waste your entire day to go see Wagner.

A noon start probably would have helped attendance. You could leave at halftime or 3rd quarter and still have dinner plans.

That’s what I don’t get

We have 7 homes games per year
At a minimum, do things in the morning

Leave by 12-1230, get in a 2 hour tailgate
Leave by 2, get in by kickoff
Leave by halftime, home by 530-600

Honestly baffles me

I'm not sure if the league technically mandates it, but it seems like only league opponents are used by member schools for homecoming games. And always 12pm est starts 🤷‍♂️
Not really on the noon kick off thing Sandusky has 3:30 p.m. start for Homecoming for UMass on 10/14. Purdue had a 3:30 kick for Homecoming Saturday vs. Illinois. There are other examples, too.
