Can anyone recommend a good chocolate protein drink that actually tastes like chocolate? Nutrisystem has a great one but is shall we say pricey

Make them with protein powder, taste better and more grams of protein.
Milk, frozen fruit, spinach leaves, scoop of plain yogurt, scoop of peanut butter. Key is to blend and add protein powder while blending. Ready made always has a chalk after taste.
When buying powder buy most grams per 1 scoop you don’t want filler.

You left out a banana, That’s a must. Also like the coconut milk as opposed to almond or cow

I like the muscle pharm brand at Costco. Chocolate milk flavor. Comes in a black and green container. Not chalky and mixes well.

I’ve been using Optimum Nutrition double chocolate for years. Good when mixed with bananas and peanut butter.

Surprised no mentions for Optavia in this thread yet. Optavia creamy chocolate shake is by far the best tasting chocolate protein drink out there, and very low sugar and carbs

Just curious. What’s the point of drinking a protein drink? Is it a meal replacement or meant for pre/post workout?

Wholefoods used to have a 365 brand one that was cheap and I thought tasted good. Unfortunately I haven't seen it in awhile.

I typically just buy whatever is on sale. Right now I have KOS, which is pretty good, but I think it's a little sweet(though I do have frozen banana and strawberry in there so maybe I shouldn't blame it all on the mix). I also add my leftover coffee to it which will tone down the sweetness and if I have an early workout helps pep me up afterwards. Also good for a swig just prior.

I had a thought swirling around in the ethos of buying some pure cocoa powder to add in, and this thread might inspire me to do so. Maybe.

Orgain Clean Protein at Costco. Taste is good and price is right. When on sale they're about $1.25 a shake.

When I was 5’10” and 110 lbs my mom made me a nightly shake of milk, nutrament, banana and ice cream. 3 yrs later I was 6’ and 135.
Same for me but I was already 135 freshman year and my baseball coach wanted me at 170. I think I got to 167 for my senior year. Was 6’2” though.

It can be either. I started carb cycling and it's great to drink in between meals to get the amount of proteins I need per day while staying under 50g of carbs daily. It's also good after a workout when your body is craving calories.

Some MDs recommend people older than 50 consume 1 gram of protein for each pound of body mass to help maintain muscle mass as we age coupled with resistance training to counteract sacropenia. The recommendations by the FDA under the standard American diet are woefully inadequate. The crap Myplate recommendations by the FDA will not provide sufficient protein to meet higher protein goal.

High protein diets also have a higher satiety per calorie, which helps prevent overeating.

I started using protein shakes after I realized that I wasn’t eating nearly enough protein after tracking it for two or three weeks…. to do that, I used the free version of the MyFitnessPal app which recommended a protein intake on a daily basis.

The protein powder I recommended above is very clean in terms of ingredients. I have a non-dairy protein mix that I also use from time to time from Amazing Grass.

Premier Protein is the best I've found. Premixed, tastes like chocolate, 30 grams of protein, only 160 calories, low carb, sugar and fat.....Packed with vitamins too.

What does the app recommend for protein intake? I see that app has been sold at least twice (Under Armour recently sold it).

One of the doctors I mentioned above has a protein app that helps you calculate protein intake, but a quick looks shows it is a work in progress. His book the P:E Diet is a great and simple read on leveraging protein in your diet.

^^ it depends on your age, weight, and physical activity level. I try to workout 3-5 times a week so my number tends to be higher. My goal should be 140~160 grams per day but I was only hovering around 100 during my tracking window.

I can definitely relate to your craving for a good chocolate protein drink. I haven't tried the one from Nutrisystem, but it sounds great! If you're looking for an alternative that may be a little more affordable, why not try making your own? All you need is some whole powdered milk, cocoa powder, and sweetener to taste. Just mix it all together and you've got yourself a delicious and nutritious drink. It may take a bit of experimenting to get the flavor just right, but it's definitely worth it!
