Did Zion sell all those extra Duke jerseys or the walk on. Yeah stars are rewarded and have benefits in our society over your average player. I took his comment addressing the NIL issue that has been screwed up yet again by the NCAA. When Greg Anthony tried to sell t shirts as a business while UNLV was number 1 the clueless NCAA shut it down . I have no problem with players with unique talents capitalizing on that talent. That is what capitalism is all about.
They are rewarded already...at the expense of your walk on.

Out of state tuition along with room and board is $45k per year along with their stipend of $9k and you get a tax free $54k. That is the equivalent of about an $80k a year salary before taxes.

Then you get chartered flights, free national exposure, access to world class facilities and one heck of a resume for future career endeavors. It's a hell of a deal for these athletes, most of who will not be playing in the NBA. Pro leagues in Europe are not paying these players more than $80k a year.

I think that's what many are saying already...compared to the rest of the student body they are...stipends, free everything, special tutoring, class schedules, etc.

That sounds pretty pro-like to me.

The rest of the student body has also not been isolating for months and practicing for months. The rest of the student body is at home with mom and dad, sleeping in, and probably seeing their friends on the weekends.

The athletes are making a tremendous sacrifice this season, and for that they can't even control their own image. That is what he's saying. He's right about that.

Again, many others are in the same boat. This isn't just a Rutgers Athletics thing.

No it's across the board but in the case of RU the "regular" students are not even on campus nor subject to the same rules. I am sure it's like that at other schools too to a certain degree.

No one is forcing anyone to play basketball in college. A free education and all the other benefits are well worth it. College is very expensive for most families so while I do not under estimate their time commitment to being on a D1 team, they are fortunate to not have to incur the expenses. They also have resources available to them such as private tutors, health care, etc that the average student could only dream of

Read above.

There are lot of people who are isolated from others who don't have the luxury of a chartered jet to get out and about, special food, exercise and training options. And with all the tech options these days, if they want to see a famiy or friend it can happen. Along with being seen on national TV at least once a week...so there is your exposure.

Again, its not just a Rutgers or sports thing.

I take GS' word for it when he talks about this season. Are different rules in play for bball?
Nothing to do with marketing yourself and setting yourself up to get ripped off by shister promoters who litter the industry

Those people also have a very legitimate gripe. And I wouldn't complain about them airing it.

The overwhelming majority (certainly not all) of people on this board are white collar workers who have been home since March. No doubt working hard. But less at risk of COVID, able to make decisions on how to (if they want) engage with others, getting deliveries, watching Netflix, etc. And yeah, we've all had a crappy time. You know how bad I want to get out my passport and travel? How many older moms can't hug their adult kids? It sucks.

So I'm not about to judge a 21 year old kid. When I was 21, I got admitted to law school a few weeks before and was on total coast mode. My last semester at RU was probably the best time of my life. I won't get into the total lack of "social distancing" that time involved lol. Geo doesn't get to have that. Instead, he's out there entertaining me after a day of work from home. He doesn't get to see his friends on the weekend. And I doubt his loved ones are comforted just seeing him on TV.

I don't doubt being an athlete entitles him to certain privileges. But I tremendously respect the huge sacrifice ALL RU athletes and coaches are making this season. GS and Pike have spoken about it. And yeah I'm not saying they're nurses at Elmhurst but geez they deserve our plaudits.

OK. I am not sure what this has to do with the sacrifices the players have made and the bar on selling their image.
Geo’s sentiments don’t just encompass a sacrifice Covid year.
Curious, do you consider a 4 year full ride scholarship a blessing or a sacrifice?

I think everyone is getting too exercised over Geo's comments. Comparing the modern day college athlete to past slavery is not only misguided but wrong . However Geo is free to say and believe what he wants. I think he should have said that today's college athlete , especially in our COVIT world, are really working de facto jobs which require enormous commitment and sacrifice on their part. And despite the benefit of a full scholarship and other benefits , it pales in comparison to all the benefits and riches given colleges and universities...enough said and play basketball.

I think many (on both of the threads) would agree with these two statements.

I can tell you there are 10s of thousands of males and females that play Div2 and Div3 athletics across this country that don't even get a dollar of Ship money and make the SAME sacrifices as Div1 Athletes. What about them ,are they going to get NLI money? Probably NOT. They don't even get a dollar of Scholarship money but make the same sacrifices. Alot of what Geo has said is right, but some is pretty much out of context compared to big picture NCAA at all levels.

The use of the term was misguided but the premise doesn't appear to be so.

Hate to see that so many have been conditioned through echo chambers to react in such a knee jerk fashion. Inhibits real discussion. The conditioning has created false equivalents of violent speech (aka free speech does not mean you can yell fire in a crowded theater) with disagreeable points of view.

Next time we hold a fan appreciation day where players are asked to sit at tables to sign autographs, be sure to give your kids money to pay for the signatures of a select few players who demand cash in exchange for their autograph.
They can join Joe D’imaggio club, where he looked at you like you were crazy and refused to sign anything without being paid

One does not relate to the other in any manner. We use words which should not be used . How many have heard people sometimes utter to others “ my boss is a slave driver”. So, it is the choice of wording and how it is used in the context of a conversation.Legacy another word which only recently has popped up as a 2020-2021 .

You are going into another area in the hope of finding justification for his “ slavery” comment. Clear and simple it is contextually misleading. It leads to more disagreements . So in your mind and many others let’s hurt the “ race “ who may or may not have been involved with slavery . We have seen most recently what some now plan on doing in order to make things right. Yeah that’s going to turn out well.
I appreciate those who want to engage with a genuine desire to seek understanding rather than pass judgment on a student athlete for expressing a valid point based on his experience.
Geo was addressing the commonality between two SYSTEMS that on the surface seem very different (NCAA and Slavery all be it in modern day). For those arguing that he should never and how dare he compare the two, I simply ask for you to consider Geo's perspective. If you have and still come to the conclusion that there are no similarities or commonalities then reasonable folks can disagree.
Also, why would you think I and many others want to hurt a specific race of people 🤔. If I do that I would only be hurting myself and members of my own family. So no, that is not on my mind and the point of this conversation.
I am hopeful that we will get this Arrangement between NCAA and "student athletes" fixed soon.

Whoooof. Ugly comment. Geo is so far gone and uninformed mentally man. I root for the kid and our players but they have some really toxic views

imagine thinking playing basketball on a full scholarship with free housing, food, training, education is equal to slavery? Yikes. Someone needs to talk to these kids.
That's the problem, somebody already did.

If I recall, slaves didn't have a choice. Its an unpaid internship for the NBA with no guarantee of a job. He has a point on getting paid for apparel with his name on it though. That makes no sense.
It's a shame the NCAA forced Geo to accept a scholarship to play basketball. Sigh.

Meanwhile, imo the NCAA is much too heavy handed on preventing student-athletes from earning money off of their talents. A couple of years ago the NCAA a kicker was ruled ineligible after he refused to give in to the NCAA’s demand for him to stop monetizing his popular YouTube channel. He had 90k followers and over 5 million views on his videos. After his school got the NCAA to allow the kid to continue to profit off his channel, provided he did not collect any revenue from videos related to athletics, the kicker declined to move his sports-related videos to a non-monetized account and the school suspended him to avoid a conflict with the NCAA.

It had nothing to do with the fact she cheated on him at every turn and held several simultaneous affairs.
The last years of his life were spent bitter and jealous of the money the modern day players were making.
He was determined to make up for it by refusing to autograph anything and everything put in front of him, including requests by all his old teammates

Wish I had a free ride to play basketball.
I guess hell understand what free is when he has to.kick out $100k a year to send his kid orfuture kids to college and see how much that hurts and how hard you have to work to make that happen. As he gets older he will learn to type get up walk away come back and see if it's a good idea to send

Slavery comparison is probably taking it too far, given that modern day slavery is a very real thing here in the 21st century and it looks nothing like what’s going on at the NCAA and Rutgers. However, that’s not to say college sports aren’t exploitive and by going to such extremes, you probably lose the ears of folks that would be receptive to various reforms.

You might like it Zap , but branding is a concept you and I never had to consider or grow up in. It is a different era and unfortunately social media is here to stay despite its negative impact on our society . Yeah their are scumbag agents out there but also a ton of ethical agents and lawyers that want to maximize their client’s earning potential. NIL is the player taking control of their own potential.

It's not true. The NCAA and pro-basketball have collaborated to create rules that make it much harder for them if they don't go to college. In another context this would be called anti-competitive practices or creating a trust and would be busted up by the gov.

My dad only died 5 years ago goru, I was immersed in the industry of branding, intellectual property and NIL.
The last thing you should want is student athletes having to entertain agents and lawyers while trying to concentrate on playing basketball and studies.

They also aren’t helping their schools ear. multi million dollar tv deals.

Yes a scholarship is a blessing but not in line with the value they bring to RU.

The fairest and manageable way to handle this is to either give them a piece of the merchandise sales or increase the stipend. It’d have to be uniform for each player within a sport.

I was friends and worked with Barry Halper's son. He told me stories about Joe. Barry was always a good friend to Joe DiMaggio and picked him up and drove him every time that he came to do a signing show, etc. Unfortunately, the friendship seemed to be only a one way friendship. One time Barry could not pick him up and Joe held it against him for years and would not talk to him.

A great player, but seemed to be a bitter old man who was jealous of the modern players like Zap said .

Best of Luck,

Casey told Mickey, Joe is getting old so go after any
ball hit in right center, so one ball hit to right center
he goes after it full speed, Joe jumps in front of him
and gives Mickey a stop sign
so Mantle slams on the brakes and catches a water
drain and tears his ACL.
and was never able to run the same. Joe may have been a great player but a real douche bag. When Mickey first came up he was introduced to Joe and he turned his back on Mick.
and walked away.
