Geo Baker In The News

When there’s a corporation with a monopoly on this sector like the NCAA, it’s not a choice. What else are the players gonna do? They are told since birth: Play basketball, get offered by a college, play for college. There’s no rival company to regulate the NCAA, so this exploitation is allowed and us Americans are too stupid to realize how this isn’t the only way it has to be. Other nations don’t have this problem with college athletics at all, particularly in Europe. Yet, the US thinks everything has to be something to make a profit on, thus we tolerate these monopolies forming right in front of our eyes. The NCAA has already had to make concessions and as things like the G-League start to sprout up, it looks like the change I and many college athletes are advocating for will happen. I mentioned race cause it’s the damn truth, if you don’t want to acknowledge it then that’s your problem. If you can put together the dots, however, you will realize the amount of corruption and shameful tactics the NCAA commits everyday.
Ahh peak 2021. The ncaa is only doing this because theyre black. So we now have its not only slavery but its slavery because theyre mostly black athletes.

weve gone full dummy mode here

Who's making billions of dollars? Each school in the coference gets paid with television contracts. Schools use this money to invest in the programs/pay for scholarships and other operating expenses. Do you think every player in D1 should be paid the same? Should the better players get paid more?
The NCAA makes the billions. Sure there’s complexity to the problem I’m not giving credit to, but IMO I think it’s ridiculous that the governing body over college athletics is a damn company doing what they can to turn a profit. It is completely unnecessary and maybe if college sports was treated like sports and not a damn money maker for certain people in the central corporation, we wouldn’t need colleges to go millions in debt for sports that ultimately lead to ridiculously high tuitions for other students to cover.

I added this part to the end of that post. The term “modern day slavery” means something entirely different to me as that is the term OR uses to describe our mission.

maybe i come from a different perspective because you can even check my IG bio, I keep this foundations link up perpetually. THIS is modern day slavery. And im sorry but frankly geo’s just so out of line using that term. So so out of line.

Deleted my last post because I had like four half typed responses to other posts in there.

Thanks for sharing this, really helped me understand your perspective, and why the words used here elicited a very different reaction in you than the one I had. Definitely worth the watch.

Yahoo and Fox News made a story out of Baker's comments because they know it's utterly preposterous click-bait. Makes Baker look like a fool and it reflects poorly on RU. Plus it's a distraction in the middle of BIG10 play. Not helping his cause or the team win basketball games.

15k followers isnt alot. I think youre wildly overestimating the reach/ “brand” these kids have. Id bet barstool sold no more than maybe 200 RHJ shirts and theyre a huge company

Again the numbers and amounts don’t matter. It’s the fact they should always own their name and likeness.

Why?
I don’t think college kids should spend their time concentrating and concerned about marketing their name and likeness.
It would apply to a scant few players, and cause animosity amongst teammates.
Marketing and publicity requires agents and shister lawyers to write contracts, kids would be getting ripped off.
There would be questions about time commitment, publicity tours, media events, what products can you endorse?
Alcohol, Vaping, off shore gambling, casinos?
Who’s paying you for events or hiring you to make appearances, our largest boosters?
You’re a student-athlete, you shouldn’t be spending your time negotiating business agreements and percentages with Rutgers because your getting paid to sign pictures and Jerseys with RUTGERS prominently displayed...without the association your name and likeness is worthless.
About the only thing I’d give you, is the players should have a standard percentage agreement worked into the scholarship, where anything the school sells with your name and likeness for profit should be split with you and the rest of the kids on scholarship, you shouldn’t be singled out.
By the way, what happens when the memorabilia show promoter has you sign 500 helmets at $10 a signature and doesn’t like the way you signed? Or the check bounces?
What do your 90 teammates who’s image and likeness are worthless think about your commitment to making money instead of playing and preparing?
You obviously understand schools like Alabama and Texas and the rest of the factories would provide far more endorsement and licensing deals than Rutgers....you really want to do this ?
You realize Geo would be promoting himself and his self worth over his teammates right?

He didn’t know this before he accepted a scholarship?
Plus you’re a race baiter.
Zappa, you are down to calling names. You have lost my friend. I'm amazed at those who claim to Love the University, yet hate on the kid who is making the University great with his blood, sweat and tears. Geo expressed a legitimate point of view that you cannot understand, don't want or care to understand because it offended white sensitivities.
What coach is going around recruiting a 16-18 year old telling them oh by the way....[insert Geo's legitimate comments here]....you're going to love it. Come to [insert University here].
Do you really expect every recruit to read, understand and internalize all the legally binding NCAA documents "before accepting" his scholarship?
Amazing!

I can’t really remember the last time I heard someone use the term “modern day slavery” or heard someone equate something to it.

You’re acting like this is a common term that is used often, I don’t think it is.

It was a really poor and out of line reference IMO. Especially when there is actual slavery, human trafficking and suffering going on in the world - and it’s not happening in college Athletics.

That’s very telling

Come on now... lol. Heres the implication that we must be of the privileged class if we dont use the term “modern day slavery” or hear others using it.

it’s just not an appropriate term to use. And if you hear people using it you should probably give your balls a tug and tell them how stupid they sound so they can avoid embarrassing themselves if they ever publicly use the term.

you pointed out a racist stereotype but you also said that anyone who thought Geo was not intelligent was racist. That’s not the same thing. You’re implying that anyone who thinks a particular black person is not intelligent is automatically racist. That’s simply not true. The race card can’t be used in every situation just to fit an agenda. It dilutes the situations where real racism exists.
Making a racist comment is being or acting racist. Is one a racist for making a racist comment? Not necessarily. Again context sheds light here.

Giving them a piece of the action is indeed fair and an option.

I haven’t commented on how it could/should be implemented, just that they shouldn’t loose the rights to their likeness. I imagine most players would be agreeable to a royalty pool.

I want Geo to be successful...period. I want Geo to be proud of his contributions to the University and so far everything I have seen says that he is. I want Geo to continue to be an Ambassador for Rutgers. I want Geo to know that the Rutgers community loves him and support him, not just "shut up and dribble". I want us to band together in one voice and sing On the Banks of the Old Raritan!
That's all I want Zappa my friend.

god I love that.😀
Geo had strong social views and applauded him for making his feelings known.
I can’t get on board with self promotion and elevating himself above his teammates because he and a few others may have some minimal market value while rest of the guys don’t!
Not to mention the unforeseen pitfalls of time commitments and fulfilling your duties and responsibilities when you endorse a product.
Commitments can be vigorous, you better have a damn good lawyer, Geo’s family would have to pay for him/her by the way

Geo’s mother got her PHD from MIT and he attended the $40k+ p/yr Proctor Academy for high school. Now he’s 4 yrs into a full ride at a prestigious university with a $5k+ p/yr stipend. Like others have said, he’s entitled to his opinion, and none of us have walked in his shoes, but at a glance he doesn’t seem to be doing too bad playing the game he loves. And something tells me that he understands the significance of the words he chose and knew that hyperbole would get more ppl talking about the name and likeness issue. I’ll still root for him and anyone else wearing the RU jersey but certainly don’t agree with his analogy here.

you should have hired a shister lawyer and bloodsucking agent to read every line of the paper you signed.
Forget about being proud and elated your kid earned himself a scholarship.
Hire that lawyer immediately and begin your profit making venture

by the way RU students (non atheletes included) who know Geo and interact with him really like him and it has nothing to do with race--he's a good guy
That's great, however you can disagree with someone's opinion and still like them a as person. It's OK, I know society doesn't want you to believe that, but you can disagree with a persons view point and not be Satan reincarnated. Hell If that wasn't the case I would have disowned half my family by now.

I dont think alot of people realize how much money these kids get lol. $5k/yr stipend and another $6k pelle grant. They have $11k of discretionary spending money to spend on whatever they please haha. After paying all necessary bills what % of americans have $1,000 a month to just blow on ANYTHING? Less than 70% is the answer.

i was friends without alot of the players during my time at RU and they talked about “pelle” as it was one of their friends haha

IF NLI goes thru will.
1.All athletes in every NCAA sport have the option of choosing the Scholarship money or NLI money option yearly?
2. Will all the Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields type athletes share there NLI $ ,team wide with the guy who just plays on the kickoff team or the kids who just practice for two years but don't dress for games?

No but you and I both are having this conversation because of it's legacy.
Geo is being criticized because of it's legacy.
One does not relate to the other in any manner. We use words which should not be used . How many have heard people sometimes utter to others “ my boss is a slave driver”. So, it is the choice of wording and how it is used in the context of a conversation.Legacy another word which only recently has popped up as a 2020-2021 . Dictionary has 2 definitions for legacy one has absolutely nothing to do with Geo’s statements. The 2nd one is also questionable in that it pertains to property or money being left in a will or handed down. So did Rutgers screw this player by leaving him out of their will?

I have never bought into the idea that playing a sport is putting oneself into a situation even remotely comes close to true slavery.
I only played in HS, but it was my choice to give up weekends, summers and a lot of other things for the "privilege" of being a member of the team. My uniforms were supplied and clearly the property of the school. The only thing I ever kept were the hose socks that went on under the stirrups (baseball). And trust me, nobody would have wanted them anyway.
My name and, sometimes, photo were in the school newspaper, local paper and yearbook. I was never asked if I was giving my permission to use them. I certainly was never compensated.
I am saddened by Gio's statements and feel it shows a level of entitlement that is just pervasive in our society in general. I am hoping that he someday looks back on it as a foolish linkage that degrades the horrible practice of slavery.

You were a slave?
You are going into another area in the hope of finding justification for his “ slavery” comment. Clear and simple it is contextually misleading. It leads to more disagreements . So in your mind and many others let’s hurt the “ race “ who may or may not have been involved with slavery . We have seen most recently what some now plan on doing in order to make things right. Yeah that’s going to turn out well.

Every school has different stipends depending on how they value the incidental costs of attending. I think stipends are only given to full scholarship athletes. Back when they first allowed this, RU gave about $4k for instate and $5k for out of state. May be higher now. And the Honors college does not get stipends. Pretty sure most if not all HC students are on at least partial academic scholarships.

Yeah other countries are in bad shape comparatively speaking. Though another topic altogether from modern day slavery in america.
I agree the players should have the option of NLI money or Ship money, not both however. To compare NCAA athletes, and I had one in my family,to modern global slavery is so 2021.
