I agree
Geo is absolutely correct.

CFB and CBB make tons of money. There should be revenue sharing model.
Athletes should be majoring in only sports. That means there should be a major called football and basketball.
Why major in Mathematics when all they are doing is playing basketball?
How is math going to help them make free throws or 3-pt shot?
i agree. College football and men’s college basketball have to be the 2 largest cases of where the workers/product receive the least amount of their share of the profit turned in due to their work

Every school has different stipends depending on how they value the incidental costs of attending. I think stipends are only given to full scholarship athletes. Back when they first allowed this, RU gave about $4k for instate and $5k for out of state. May be higher now. And the Honors college does not get stipends. Pretty sure most if not all HC students are on at least partial academic scholarships.
That's what I figured and included them for a non-athletic but a contributing student comparison. But wasn't sure.

I wonder in that HC kid should be compensated when we use their likeness in a brochure?

Like I said some there are "fans" around here that treat these players as if they are pros yet are many of the same who are attacking a college. student for using the wrong terminology and there are those that should know better who would not give up a single dollar if they had a chance-- the unfairness is striking-- do you know any pro baseball players who play for less than they think they " need"--Geo has more than a point

Until the whole thing changes, and maybe the Geo discussion does just that, the comparison to a pro vs college athlete is not the same.

I agree the players should have the option of NLI money or Ship money, not both however. To compare NCAA athletes, and I had one in my family,to modern global slavery is so 2021.

That wasn’t the context.

I am torn in about a million different directions on this. I’m in higher Ed as well.
1. I always hate comparisons to slavery - a brutal race based institution.
2.But the legacy of slavery is still with us. There is race based discrimination whether conservatives want to believe it or not.
3. There are others that profit off Geo’s exploits. A lot.
4. Nevertheless, D 1 athletes have a pretty sweet deal no matter what their skin color is. I’ll be paying student loans back til I’m dead. I wish I had athletic talent.
Bottom line - Geo has a point, but I would have couched his critiques a little differently/euphemistically.

You guys are pathetic getting on geo for some dumb tweets. He’s getting a way harder time on here than Jacob young, who drove drunk , got arrested and
then suspended.
The focus should be on beating northwestern and getting us a step closer to the tournament and geo goes down in rutgers greatness.
The issue will cause a distraction . Not every teammate of Baker is 100% in favor of that comment . They may say they support him but this 2021 and the reality is there will be several who find that not factually accurate when comparing it to slavery in the south. Geo is “ free “ to make his statements to the press. If he were being suppressed by Rutgers or others then that would be consistent with his “ slavery” comments. Hope he does well and the team wins. Nothing more on this until the next Baker comments. 🪓🪓🪓🪓

If the players are so valuable, why hasn’t a rich athlete started a league that will pay college age kids? Is it perhaps because people tune into the games because of the schools and not because the players? For example, if all the kids on our team quit tomorrow and start a team in the G league, I would have zero interest and wouldn’t watch a single game. But the players to replace them I would watch every single game because I am a fan of RuckerFor example, if all the kids on our team quit tomorrow and start a team and the G league, I would have zero interest and wouldn’t watch a single game. But the players who replace them I would watch every single game because I am a fan of Rutgers

How many actually read the comment?

He is not talking about playing college ball being like slavery? He’s talking about having to sign away his rights to his name and likeness.

That’s different than playing basketball in exchange for a scholarship.

Slavery probably isn’t the best thing to compare it too. Could have worded it better.

No-one should have to sign away their rights to their name and likeness without compensation. Rutgers makes enough on tv rights and tickets and concessions and they’d still make money on merch even if players some tshirts and jerseys. The players couldn’t use Rutgers on it anyway.

Quote below.

“Others can create their own business and make money off it so why would an athlete not be allowed to do that?? I have to sign a paper that says my name and likeness belongs to the school. Modern day slavery,"

"u realize we are playing in a pandemic being told to stay away from everyone we love just for y’all entertainment but i can’t sell my own jersey with my last name on it to help my future financially. That makes sense to u?"
Geo is 100% correct.

Do those in the Honors College get this too? Does every Athlete on scholarship one as well? How about a walkon or a non-scholarship member (like on the Olympic sports)?

Asking because I really don't know, not being rhetorical here.
I thought that if you are accepted into Honors College and you are a NJ resident you get a free ride. Could be wrong..,

Making a racist comment is being or acting racist. Is one a racist for making a racist comment? Not necessarily. Again context sheds light here.

That’s fine. So it sounds like you don’t necessarily think anyone who thinks Geo is not intelligent is a racist. Where we differ is that I also don’t think it’s automatically racist to COMMENT that he (or anyone else for that matter) is not intelligent just because a stereotype exists. For the record, I think Geo is very intelligent from what I can tell.

Of course it shouldn't be but if you're a player, treated like a pro, playing in a system where money rules and makes billions for other than the"worker bees" you'd have more than a right to complain and those that deny that are users and when I hear the arguments and criticisms here I could well be aware why he had the frustration to say his piece

That is the same for professional sports as well. People root for laundry and not players. If the Yankees traded Jeter to the Padres, not one Yankee fan would stop watching the Yankees. They are fans of the jersey and not the players.

So this idea of choice is good... Get paid for your value on the open market or accept a full ride with some decent perks. But if you accept a monthly salary make sure all your bills are covered including : Housing, food, books, tuition and daily expenses . If you are a top player you’ll do fine if you ‘re a utility type or average player you are in a tough hole. That B1G O line guy who busts his *** ... sorry... that 7-8 guy behind Geo ? Sorry... Rutgers would rather give it up than pay it’s athletes . I would love to see the student body’s reaction .

Sure, but if jeter goes to the padres millions of people will still be watching the Padres, if the Rutgers basketball team goes to the G league they will go from having millions of viewers to having what 5000 viewers? This is an apples and oranges comparison

Your argument screams for a Patriot League type situation and further assumes these players have the means to materially change things-- that's the problem when you have people treating you as a cog with no real say

Again, when you sign on the dotted line you know this already. If you don't, that's on you. Not Rutgers or the NCAA.

I don't recall ever seeing a college athlete in any sport where it's just their face where the uniform or the schools name is also not shown too.

Ryan Hart for the football video game examplecwas wearing a Rutgers uniform and Block R on the cover, not a Ryan Hart one.
Barstool is selling the exact shirt you are describing now with RHJ on it.

The elephant in the room that I’m not sure many are familiar with is Geo like many bi-racial kids has an identity crisis (you can look up psychology studies on this) and what we have witnessed out of him over the past year or so indicates him feeling like he has to be extra loud and “ride the culture” extra hard to feel like he’s “one of them”. Both him and Ron are the same way, they grew up more privileged than the large majority of Americans and I genuinely think they feel bad because what they’re seeing on social media tells them that they should be oppressed and they are far far from that.

Ron obviously has a famous father and he grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth, and if I had to guess Geo comes from a family where his mother is a millionaire and an MIT grad. He went to a high school that is about $40,000 a year, he hasnt struggled for day in his life.

It’s for a different topic, however I just think this ***** a little perspective on why Gio despite being as privileged and educated as he is speaks in Ebonics and goes over the top on a lot of things
Please stop. Your assumptions are idiotic, and quite frankly, disgusting.

I think that's what many are saying already...compared to the rest of the student body they are...stipends, free everything, special tutoring, class schedules, etc.

That sounds pretty pro-like to me.

Whoooof. Ugly comment. Geo is so far gone and uninformed mentally man. I root for the kid and our players but they have some really toxic views

imagine thinking playing basketball on a full scholarship with free housing, food, training, education is equal to slavery? Yikes. Someone needs to talk to these kids.
You are an asshat. He was talking about selling likeness. If you do not believe kids can sell their likeness for profit , you are a communist. You have such terrible takes and you are about as clueless as the NCAA.

Not sure how that would be possibe or we would even know who he or anyone like him in any sport really is?

I was a very good scholar and athlete and was proud to be able to continue to compete 4 extra years in track. I would have loved to get a full ride in exchange for doing something I love. I was probably good enough to play at a lower level in football (ex. Ivy League and Patriot League) and if I was able to get one, would have played both sports. Of course it’s not easy with the epidemic, but you get tutors, leave school with no debt, and get to play something you love. And to me Pike and Schiano (plus exposure in the B1G) can get you to the next level if you are blessed with the talent, and put in the work.

If you believe it perhaps. If you don’t take the bait no his point is misleading.
It's hyperbole and a metaphor, not meant to be taken literally. But it still wasn't smart in that it was more inflammatory than he probably intended, and it didn't help him make his point. It distracted from his legitimate point. But it wasn't THAT bad. It's a tempest in a teapot. It's no worse than the dozens of times I've casually called someone a Nazi to make a point. I don't literally mean that they are bloodthirsty Jew killers. That's what hyperbole is. But I'm not a star in the public eye, so I can get away with it. Geo made a minor miscalculation from from a PR perspective. That's it.

Did Zion sell all those extra Duke jerseys or the walk on. Yeah stars are rewarded and have benefits in our society over your average player. I took his comment addressing the NIL issue that has been screwed up yet again by the NCAA. When Greg Anthony tried to sell t shirts as a business while UNLV was number 1 the clueless NCAA shut it down . I have no problem with players with unique talents capitalizing on that talent. That is what capitalism is all about.

Geo is no different than many 20 something year old these days. a 20-year-old in 1968 who needs to cut lawns in the summer and deliver newspapers and concerned about going to Vietnam is different than a 20-year-old these days.
they have limited experience and loud platforms. Mirroring and feeling victimized is all relative and very chic.
It brings to mind the book/movie The Devil's Arithmetic - a story about an
entitled and "feeling victimized" youth who gets transported back to the Holocaust and of course learns a deep, overdue experiential lesson. I read Geo's comments and thought ",meh," they were pretty status quo given today's social and political and media driven environment. We grumpy old men love to complain about how spoiled these kids are that we are, at least in part, responsible for spoiling. I also wonder if & how his feelings had anything to do with mirroring the team's
recent funk which seemed hard to explain.
