We just beat Maryland this year with a worse team than we’ll have in 2018. Northwestern lost more than any other team in the Big Ten and lost their all time greatest RB, with no good recruiting classes to back it up

You are on f’in drugs if you think we should not win 6 games this year

Or...
You are setting super low expectations with the plan to say Ash overachieved to make yourself feel better about this time, just like everyone did with Flood for years 1-3

Nice “fan you are.
Your act got old with Flood

Flood?

LMAO

That guy was a joke from day 1.
I supported him on this board (or I should say, sat by in silence) until everyone knew he was done.

IMO, a fan should not make it harder for a coach to succeed than necessary by posting crap on a message board.

Ash is trying to dig us out of an awful situation, so he is going to need time, and all of his moves seem to indicate he is learning and improving and moving in the right direction.

To hold him to a ridiculous standard and say, beat Maryland and Northwestern or you are fired, is assinine.

If you think we should win 6 games this year with no problem, do what kyk did and put $15K on it.
After all, 6 of the 1st 7 are cream puffs, right?

Dude, WTF are you talking about?

Why do you think Maryland and Northwestern are automatic Ws?

You think Vegas will have us favored in either game?

Maryland has been bringing in classes much higher than us, and they are playing at home.

Northwestern was 10-3 last year and won their last 8 games.

You are on f’in drugs if you think that is a gimme win.

Or...
You are setting unrealistic expectations with the plan to call for Ash’s head if he doesn’t achieve them.

Nice “fan” you are.
Your act is getting old.

The anti-ashers are the first to complain about recruiting. They beetch and moan and complain about how a team like Maryland is out recruiting us. But then they turn around and expect Maryland to be an auto win.

So, is Maryland a good team or are they a bad team? Which is it? So schizo, can't make up their damned minds.

Not one single Ash supporter called Maryland a world beater. But Maryland is not an auto win for a team that is just trying to become mediocre to good.

Also, I never said wait 5 years. I said things are improving every year. Am I wrong? When the time comes when we are not improving, then yeah, call for his head. I was one of the biggest Anti-Flood here. If I don't think Ash is doing a good job, do you really think I will be here defending him? My allegiance will always be to Rutgers. So as long as the coach is doing what is best for Rutgers, then I will support the guy. If not, yeah, I will definitely call for his head.

The problem with you guys is you're not even consistent in your thought process. You just hate Ash, period.

We are finally building depth. REAL DEPTH. As in B1G caliber depth. Everyone and their mother who have seen the Spring practices will tell you that it is night and day from the Spring Practices with Flood and Ash's first year.

But yeah, Ash's recruiting is no different than Flood's. WTF is wrong with you? Such a freaking troll.

I hope Ashs 2 and 3 stars are better than Floods. But I don't see anything tangible to prove that it's the case. You would expect Ash recruits to displace Flood starters. But that hasn't happened.

It's Year 3 in the same system so you'd expect things to look smoother than prior years, where the team went through the learning curve.

Every year for as long as I can remember, people reported that we were bigger, faster, and stronger, which is/was true. Even during the Terry Shea years there was someone who would write a long dissertation on spring practice. We look impressive because we are practicing against ourselves. But, Our competitors are also getting better, and they have recruited better talent. So saying we have better depth because people like what they see at practice really doesn't prove anything to me.

The real proof as to whether our depth is better will come during games, like the Ohio State game, which is a benchmark game.

I will say that I like our depth at QB and LB. but there are too many holes elsewhere, as seels has pointed out, especially at DL, which is why there is a new coach at that position. Very concerned that after Wilkins and Bateky graduate, we will not have adequate replacements. But first things first, if we can at least have some semblance of a passing game, it will be a huge step forward.

Al, you just don't give up. It's the same old song. It's obvious you are not an Ash fan. All I can say is something similar to what Greg sold us anf that is to resurrect a broken broken program and rebuild it on a solid foundation. You have no idea how things crumbled after Greg left and thr prigram was turned over to Kyle. In addition Barchi's attitude as it relates tyo athletics for a major state university was and is deplorable. He is fully accountable for hiring Julie and for holding back on funding much needed improvements to compete in the B1G. One step at a time Hobbs is putting tjings in order and Ash and Pikiel and new facilities will pave the way.

But please just stop....first it's athletics and now I see you are into construction and buildings and grounds. If you want to do something good then run for political office. Then maybe you will better u understand NJ, Rutgers and the problems and how things do and don't get done.

Agreed, Al. I'll feel a lot better after next year's headshots come out.

On a completely unrelated note, this guy looks jacked. I wonder if he has any eligibility left? We could use the depth.

The "don't worry be happy" and "trust Ash" theme of your post does not inspire confidence. You can blame Kyle in year 1 and year 2. Year 3 is where the rubber meets the road, and Ash owns this. With three recruiting classes in, the majority of players on the team are his.

Kyle could have done a lot of things better, but he did leave a base of talent, which should have been enough to not be putrid. We won 8 games with many of these players in 2014. While we only won 4 games in 2015, we were at least competitive in some others:
  • falling 37-34 to WSU
  • falling 31-24 to MSU
  • falling 46-41 to Maryland
We have struggled the past two years largely due to inadequate qb play and a scheme that didn't fit the players in year 1. That falls squarely on Chris Ashes shoulders.

In order for me to feel comfortable with where things are headed, I need to see signs of progress. These are the concerns:
  • Recruiting worsened from 2017 to 2018
  • Ash recruited fewer than half the number of NJ HS players in 2018 than he did in 2017
  • To make up for the lack of NJ recruiting productivity, Ash recruited 6 players from NY, where the quality of HS football isn't as good, and players will likely need more development
  • Even during the Kyle Flood era, NJ's best recruits, like Jarrett Guarantano, would at least unofficially visit Rutgers. That doesn't seem to be happening, with the same frequency, this year
  • The only high ranked 2019 NJ recruit Todd Hunt sees Rutgers landing is NJ #9 Nyquee Hawkins
http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2018/03/post_64.html

Answer: I'd probably go as high as Nyquee Hawkins, who I have No. 9 in my NJ.com Top 50, although I feel more comfortable with Rahmir Johnson at No. 13. Hawkins has been bullish on Rutgers recently, even suggesting that Rutgers recruiting assistant Matt Hewitt is the best recruiter in the region. But, ultimately, will that materialize into a pledge for such a highly-regarded national recruit? Johnson is likely a safer bet, although with 14 offers, he could easily end up elsewhere, as well. But one would think his ties to his former head coach Nunzio Campanile could help.

St. Joseph (Met.) offensive lineman John Olmstead, N.J.'s top recruit, has kept Rutgers in the mix, but is unlikely to stay home in the end with Minnesota and Notre Dame coming on strong. And I've got Colonia's Antonio Alfano at No. 2, though I think he has the highest ceiling of anyone in the state. If his family decides he'd be better off staying close to home following a a high school career in which he's struggled off the field, that would at least give Rutgers a shot.

None of this is explained by what Julie or Barchi did or didn't do. The purse strings were unloosened for Ash and donors stepped up. Consequently, he has better facilities than his predecessors including:
  • outdoor practice facility
  • new weight room equipment
  • improved Hale Center Lobby
In spite of these upgrades, Ash's message simply isn't resonating with many of the best NJ recruits. Gregs recruiting got better as time went on, so there was a comfort level with his strategy. Our recruiting took a step back from last year to this year, hence the apprehension.

I think our best chance to move forward is for one of the QBs to step up, so that we see significant improvement, giving him a chance to sell tangible results.

Seriously, what happened to Al?

He used to post crap like Tre Timbers headshots, better than Ohio State and USC.

Now he craps all over Ash and gives the man no quarter.
Kind of weird.

With Brian Leonard, Tiquan Underwood, Clark Harris, Sam Johnson, Ray Rice, Kenny Britt, Mike Teel, and Co, we had the potential to be better than USC and Ohio State. Even with Gary Nova and Co, we had a chance. After Gary Nova, we haven't had a snowballs chance in hell. That's the difference.

...you realize Maryland was complete crap in 2015, correct? It wasn’t an accomplishment to lose to a decimated 3-9 team at home on Senior Day ...and the WSU game was largely in part to Jamarion Grant and a long TD run by Martin.

Point is, we were more competitive throughout the season, then we were this past year. Losing to Indiana 41-0 and losing to Eastern Michigan no doubt has raised questions in recruits minds. The only way to eliminate that is to find a QB and win this year.

Sorry but that Maryland team was worse than any team we lost to in 2017. 2015 also had Carroo and a healthy Grant, who combined were pretty much responsible for like 75% of our scoring. We also pretty much got controlled by a subpar Nebraska team at home that was probably not as good as Indiana this last year. I can see the point you’re trying to make and it’s not totally off the wall but that Maryland game does NOT support it.

Al, I'll make it simple. Who is the person that every year and especially under Flood who would post how good the team was and how good the players were etc. Flood's first year was decent in part because be inherited a solid group of players from Greg. And just who did he recruit at qb where you seem to say we have had problems? And wby do you think Hobbs cleaned out most if the staff and other things associated with the Flood regime including weight training, medical personnel as well coahing staff.

Recognize there were prolems with the culture that had evolved. And you expect this all to be cleaned up on one year. You just don't get it. You over evaluated everything Flood did every year and now quickly want to stick it to Ash who inherited a less than good situation, no qb depth and expect a 180 degree turn around in one year. It just isn't valid and your constant negativity on Ash is the only 180 degree turn around that has occurred.

And please lay off of comparing us to OSU. Perhaps the one good thing is we play them early but on the other hand just what will you expect and be saying about our qb situation as it is fairly obvious it can be summarized as young and untested.

The first recruiting year was a mixture of Ash and Flood recruits. Ash did his best to honor the commitments of Flood's recruits. As it turned out, many of them did not work out. Sure some did, like Gray and Hayes but majority of "Flood's kids" did not - Pollock is probably the poster child of that group. Granted it was a mix bag, with guys that didn't work out like Oden and Bailey, but considering the hand he was dealt, Ash actually did a good job with last minute additions like Lumor, Tyreek-Williams, Lonsdorf, Maeitti and Turner. If anything the first recruiting class told me Ash knows how to spot talent - stars be damned.

Do you not understand that as Schiano's recruits departed from the team every year that the talent level also continued to decreased? Winning 8 games in 2014? With guys like Senior Gary Nova, NFLers Turzilli, Kroft and Carroo, along with other guys like Kaleb Johnson and Steve Longa? That group? Oh by the way how did that group do against your bench mark - Ohio State? As far as being competitive, I suppose being competitive with Iowa, Washington, Nebraska and beating Maryland doesn't count? Talk about cherry picking.

We have struggled the past two years largely due to inadequate qb play and a scheme that didn't fit the players in year 1. That falls squarely on Chris Ashes shoulders. - So not having an adequate QB in his first two years is Ash's fault? Okey dokey. Whatever dude.

In order for me to feel comfortable with where things are headed, I need to see signs of progress. These are the concerns:
  • Recruiting worsened from 2017 to 2018 - Says who? The 2018 kids have a strong chance to have starters/2 deep at QB, WRs, RB. Anybody who says the 2018 class is a bad class is simply clueless. This narrative has to stop. It's off the charts in the stupid department.
  • Ash recruited fewer than half the number of NJ HS players in 2018 than he did in 2017 - Recruiting the right fit and good athletes is infinitely more important than where they are from.
  • To make up for the lack of NJ recruiting productivity, Ash recruited 6 players from NY, where the quality of HS football isn't as good, and players will likely need more development - Brian Leonard, Ray Rice, the McCourty twins and many others will disagree with you.
  • Even during the Kyle Flood era, NJ's best recruits, like Jarrett Guarantano, would at least unofficially visit Rutgers. That doesn't seem to be happening, with the same frequency, this year - Uhm, Zamar Wise - arguable best QB in NJ 2019 Class would disagree with you.
  • The only high ranked 2019 NJ recruit Todd Hunt sees Rutgers landing is NJ #9 Nyquee Hawkins - How many high ranked recruits from NJ did your boy Flood land in four years?

Maryland is not a good team now. Maryland will be a good team in a few years.

Ash lovers say it takes 4-5 years before we see his recruits and can expect anything. But then they turn around and expect Maryland recruits to immediately make them a world beater.

So schizo

Agree. MD right now is not good. You are what your record is-- regardless of playing the 4th string QB.

I do think think the upgrade in OC with Matt Canada over Walt Bell will pay off. And DC Heater is miles better than Buh.

If the 2 QBs stay healthy, I expect MD to have a better record than last year for sure. Durkin's recruiting will though truly start to mature/pay off in 2 years IMO.

What did you expect from someone who expected 11-1 every year and still expects bowl games even though his dude literally flooded the program? Was he one of those who wanted The Golden Coach here as well to continue the Schiano/Penn State connections?

Damm shame when the Miami Hurricane fan growing up has more faith in Rutgers future than the alledged Rutgers Super Fan!!!!

And rather than talking about the great progress our coach is making on the recruiting trail, you're talking about the inadequacies of the previous coach. This reminds me of the Terry Shea era all over again, where people like you defended Terry Shea and bashed Graber.

For a long time, we had a chance for excellence, though we never achieved it. Since 2014, we haven't even come close to having a chance. Though there are signs of some improvement, we should be doing better, especially in recruiting.

I tried so hard not to post on this, but please do not say Chris Ash and Terry Shea in the same breath. Whether people agreed with it or not, after being named Rutgers coach,Chris Ashhonored his commitment to Ohio State players ,coached a bowl game, and then hit the ground running for our university. The first thing Terry Shea did was take a vacation.

I’m not interested in trashing Shea either but couldn’t agree more with the overall sentiment of this post. At the very least Ash seems to be laying positive groundwork for us, and if you look at some of the staff moves he’s made along with some facilities upgrades it’s obvious that they’re not even in the same galaxy as far as their respective tenures are concerned...just more Al being Al.

What do you mean, not true. Off course its true. I pointed out earlier that Schiano's recruiting strategy always was the state of rutgers and florida. Davon Clark, Ryan Neill, Rikki Cook and Brad Cunningham were Top NJ recruits Schiano landed in his first class.
And cook never played here

Flood carried over Schiano's vision and strategies so there was never any question regarding their viability. Everyone knew what Flood's vision was because it was Schiano's.

Brian Leonard WAS a superstar, especially during his senior year of high school. Don't bother looking for a Brian Leonard on the roster because he isn't there.

http://www.ogd.com/article/20120630/DCO02/706309873/0/ogd

A four-year standout at Gouverneur Central where he once set New York State high school records for scoring and yardage, Leonard relayed his experience at the Rutgers football camp into an outstanding career where he helped elevate the Scarlet Knights to national prominence. He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams and spent two season there before making the move to the Bengals.

I get it that you don't want people to level any criticism at Ash. For you, no criticism will be valid. Its also great that you're lauding Ash for avoiding Kyle Floods pitfalls, but its too bad that you can't laud him for his recruiting or his results on the football field. You keep bashing Kyle, but the fact is, Kyles worst season is equivalent to Ash's best.

Chris Ash is getting paid $2M+ to deliver results, and the results he has delivered just aren't good enough. I think he can be a great coach but he's got to do a better job of messaging and establishing a clear vision/identity for the program. We need clear value proposition that NJ recruits will find compelling, so that players like Ronnie Hickman and others will at least give us a look, rather than blowing us off. McNulty's value proposition of getting kids ready for the NFL, is an example of something i think recruits would find compelling.
Kyle Floods worse season was not all about wins and losses. It was how he handled the team, the Barnwell situation etc. So I think yes we can laud Ash for what he has done for RU in his 2 years here. He started at ground zero and now he is about halfway to where he wants to get.

I haven't heard anything from him that constitutes a vision. Look at previous links i've provided for James Franklin and PJ Fleck for examples.
Try going back to his first presser and read that. Maybe didn't say the word vision but he sure as **** laid out his plan (vision).

Since you can't respond with facts, so you respond with nonsense. That's all you can do, because any facts regarding the ash era aren't that great. Our recruiting is not competitive and thats a fact. ranked 12 out of 14 Big Ten teams is a fact.

maybe you conveniently forgot that we have a new outdoor facility that serves us well, too. Nevertheless, facilities explains some of the difference, but you're overlooking the obvious in that PJ Fleck is a much better recruiter than Chris Ash, though Ash may be a better coach, though the jury is out.

Tired of the BS excuses like yours. we're being asked to pay serious money for a crappy product, and i'm sick of it. I want results.
Wow look who is calling the kettle black about posting nonsense.

Worst part of the Barnwell situation is that he sold his soul to keep his job. Not a single part of that entire episode was orchestrated by Flood. Regardless, he gave up his own ideals in order to keep a paycheck

Barnwell needed to RS in 2015 and get his head on straight. The last place he needed to be was on the field. I think of the way Schiano handled the Francis situation and just shake my head on how it went down with Barnwell.

Wasn’t that the year we lost all the criminals at DB? Don’t remember anymore. BTW- wonder how history plays out if...those kids got their heads on straight(some very good ball players) and if...Julie didn’t F up trying to oust Flood. What if she succeeded and got a replacement early or if she had all leaks plugged and no one ever found out she attempted the coup.
I don’t think Flood was cut out to be CEO but what a difference it all could have made...

Yeah that was the doomed 2015 season though the Barnwell stuff was all before most of the other stuff on the timeline (think his stuff was Spring 2015 and the arrests all came down that August). If I recall correctly there were 2 DUI’s (one in 2013 and I think another in the Spring of 2015) and then the whole Dance Appreciation debacle. If Schiano were in charge Barnwell would have been redshirted in about 2 nanoseconds and his dorm room would have been moved to the Academic Resource Center.
