what we have to remember is its March, there have only been maybe what 5 12 plus March snowfalls in NYC in history....I think the last one we had here...March 93...12-18 inches around the area...I think NYC didnt get that much...even that one I think tainted in the end. Remember last year 18-24 inch forecast bust...and it was around this time that some models started waffling a bit. Still looks like a pretty big event but not sure those honking the big numbers verbatims were being realistic. Lets see what the Euro says this afternoon, we can guess what the GFS will come in as.

well the 12Z NAM ticked even further west....raising dry slotting issues for part of NJ and NYC and moving the best totals to the NW.....see the gradual cut again in totals on Kuchera..2nd time in a row

10-1 for Numbers

6Z GFS this morning moved the rain line NW about 25 miles cutting snow totals down for I-95 and the 12Z NAM just did the same (maybe 4-8" of snow for Trenton to NYC, which is what the NWS kind of has), so if you love snow, you have to be at least concerned this could become wetter than white for 95. Could also be a blip/wobble. Hard to say.

I"m liking that 0 and 1" for the coast of South Monmouth.

Total crapshoot of a forcast for my area, western camden county. It seems like thr maps are going bacn for between the 2-4 inch range to 8-12. Looks like a boom or bust scenario

Just came back from getting an everything bagel with cream cheese. Don't know if it's the storm or if it's just Tuesday but the place was packed with milf's sporting yoga pants and I saw a few sporting Rutgers hoodies.

GFS continues west trend, would appear less precip and warmer...2-4 for those in central jersey which with low rates would be tough to reach that....edit not even 2-4 on this map..more like an inch or so verbatim

lets see if the Euro stand pat or starts to move to some of these more western solutions

@Knight Shift is looking good on that bet.

cannot say that yet....Euro is up next. There are still models like RGEM and CMC that are 6-10 inches for the area and remember the NAM is still a solid hit even with the trends.....I think at least with these shift west the idea of totals getting cut back due to track or temperature issues is now in play. However the models could always wobble back later today and tonight

I just can’t buy the GFS. It just hasn’t been good this winter. Although it won’t take much of a western shift to dramatically cut down totals for people on this board.

When is the storm suppose to start Tuesday night into Wednesday or Wednesday night into Thursday

some lighter overruning precip from after midnight through the morning tomorrow...whether that accumulates depends on location and how heavy it comes down. maybe a lull and then the main show is tomorrow afternoon into the evening.

This. Tomorrow morning is just noise for the most part and the commute shouldn't be bad with maybe 1-2" on grassy surfaces, if that, since it may also be rain for 95/coast in the am (even if it's heavy snow later) - it's the afternoon through the evening that is the issue, when it could be snowing very hard and accumulating on all surfaces, even major highways (if heavy snow) and the winds pick up and the commute could be a nightmare if everyone goes to work and leaves at the same time.

Euro is a consistant... 10-16 inches on 10-1 maps for much of nj

I think for those of us in northern Morris County and North and West in NJ it’s becoming pretty certain we’re in for some big snows.

Only model showing us even on a battle line is the GFS and that missed the temperature boundaries by about 75 miles or so on last storm

Could also be a blip/wobble. Hard to say.

11 am edit: 12Z GFS has very little snow and mostly rain for the 95 corridor as the track moved west. The 12Z RDPS (mesoscale model, like the NAM) shows 1-2 feet of snow. So yeah, easy forecast. Let's see what Dr. No (Euro) and the UK say.

11:40 am edit. Model mayhem in full force. 12Z HRDPS (high res version of the RDPS) is a huge hit and the CMC continues to be a good hit for 95, while the UK supposedly "looks good" from a pro met (that model isn't available easily). So, yeah, easy forecast.

The 12Z Euro is a great run, still, for 95, but the precip axis has moved NW about 25-30 miles and surface temps at the height of the storm are 1-2F warmer for 95 and the coast, so areas towards the NJ coast and on eastern LI do much worse for this run vs. 00Z and 95 is all snow (10-16" verbatim), but is very close to rain. I can see maps but can't post them, but it's clear from comparing the last two runs. Any further move NW and the 95 corridor from Phiilly to NYC will be in trouble.

Typical very close call for 95 - many pros say that snowstorms (especially the rain/snow line) for this area are the hardest to forecast anywhere outside of mountainous areas, which are just impossible, with so many elevation changes. But usually, nobody cares about mountainous areas, whereas tens of millions live from DC to Boston. So, yeah, easy forecast. Gun to my head, I don't think the NWS changes the forecast too much, as they're already pretty conservative for the 95 corridor (5-10"), but we might not know the outcome on this one until the event is underway.

One warning: tomorrow morning won't be a big deal, as there will be light snow and maybe rain for 95/coast and the precip doesn't get heavy until the late morning through the late evening. However, where this ends up being all snow, it's going to come down at 1-2" per hour in the afternoon/evening, such that the pm commute could be a nightmare, as heavy snow will accumulate even on major highways and a lot of heavy wet snow will very likely stick to trees (and not blow off easily) leading to downed trees and power outages.

@Knight Shift is looking good on that bet.
GFS is generally acknowledged to be the worst model, especially with thermal fields in borderline situations (it was putrid Friday), so I still think NB will get more than 4" in this storm, given the Euro, UK, HRDPS, CMC all being 8" or more, but instead of it being close to a lock, I'd say the trends today make it more like a 2:1 in favor call.

Anyone NW of 287 from NY state line down to 78 and north of 287 in NY is just about a lock to get at least 10" of snow and likely more like 12-18".

Yea. I’m just NW of 287 in Butler. But I’m up the mountain a little and even that gives me a temp 1-3 degrees colder then down the hill and 3-4 less then even Wayne

My side yard is literally woods, then 287. Always find it funny when weather guys use that as a boundary of some sort since I’m literally right on the line. Haha.

Flying into JFK tomorrow at noon (moved up flight that was originally getting in at 8). Based on quick read through the thread looks like this is trending away from heavy snow east of Manhattan, correct? Once I land, and fight way into NYC, I am hunkering down for hoops for a few days so just want to make sure I am looking reasonably ok to get in. These threads are really great, by the way

Even if we have the snowy solution, which is very much on the table for 95 and JFK, noon is probably just around when precip starts getting heavy, so you probably have a good chance of getting in, given priorities for Intl flights. And if it's more rain than snow, no major issues, as winds aren't going to be crazy like Friday (30-40 mph gusts maybe at that time).

Seems like every storm we get layely has major bust potential...as Numbers said while the euro still delivered a wallop it continues to tick west..as other models had been. This is no sure thing..the next 2 model run suites will be the most important runs of our lives
