He basically set the stage for shows like American Idol and The Voice. Of course, The Gong Show was way more entertaining and groundbreaking.

Will he get a star at Langley?
Who knows? What a strange story line that was. Made for a great movie though. I regard Confessions of a Dangerous Mind as one of the better films George Clooney has made.

From his Wiki page;
He was best known for hosting The Gong Show, and creating The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game. He was also a songwriter, who wrote the hit "Palisades Park" for Freddy Cannon and the author of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, his autobiography, which became a film directed by George Clooney.

After the release of the movie, CIA spokesman Paul Nowack said Barris' assertions that he worked for the spy agency "[are] ridiculous. It's absolutely not true.

Now that is an instant classic! Surprised I've never caught that on reruns.
Rerun was never on the Gong Show.
But he could have given Gene Gene the Dancin' Machine a run for his money. Did not realize Fred Berry Died in 2003 at 52.

Did she ever do anything else but judge the Gong Show? RIP Chuck, funny man way ahead of his time.

I got to see the Unknown Comic in Las Vegas, maybe it was in the early to mid 80's. He was pretty good. Took the bag off after about 20 minutes into his act.

...and don't forget the $1.98 Beauty Show. [laughing]

R.I.P.

So glad someone mentioned this. The sight of some silly woman with a bouquet including bunches of carrots crying while Rip Taylor sang how "you get flowers, and a dollar ninety-eight" was just awesome.

"The Gong Show" was the ultimate in guilty pleasures, and it gave Jaye P. Morgan something to do. Still remember one episode in which every contestant came out and sang "Feelings." The Unknown Comic, Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine ... just great stuff.

Thanks, Chuck. We might not always admit, but we needed it. RIP, Sir.

One skip always stuck with me...they of course had a time minimum before some could get hinged. One game came out and in country western sang "its been lonely in the saddle since my horse died"!and that was it. I don't know why that one has stuck with me for almost 40 years.
