It would be like a Chris mullin type thing , except he didn't go to our school and spurned us . But Williams can come back to make good. He needs to hire a solid recruiting ace , who will come with the duffel bags full of cash . Get a veteran bench coach like a Johnny Dawkins.
I still want Hurley , but warning to jay will .

If J williams showed some loyalty and decided to play in his home state instead of taking a payoff from Duke and if he had some coaching ability I'd be open to this. But since he doesn't meet either of those requirements J Williams can go F himself.

Guys....We are one of worst D1 schools in the nation. We are smack dab in the middle of the best basketball talent in America...Jesus....Willams, Bynum and Towns played high school less than 5 miles away from the RAC. NO ONE has been able to get it done...NO ONE...We should have been good random years by accident.

We finally have a new AD which gives us the leg room to correct the Eddie Jordan hire NOW...a hire made purely for PR purposes...a hire made by an interm AD, NOT THE AD...(WHO THE HELL HIRES A COACH BEFORE YOU HIRE AN AD????!?!?!? THIS ALWAYS KILLED ME).

This is not the time to take a chance on someone who:

Has never recruited
Has never been an assistant coach at the high school, D3, D2, D1 levels
Has never been a head coach at the high school, D3, D2, D1 levels
Has never managed a team, coaches, college kids, academic, recruiting..NOTHING

The list goes on and on. Eddie sucked and he at least had NBA head coaching experience.

We need someone who has "been there, done that"...We need someone from D1 that has both recruited well and won while doing it...

No more top notch recruiters with no head coaching experience...Hill
No more D3 coaches who don't know how to manage Top 100 talent...Rice
No more NBA coaches with no college/recruiting experience in the last 10 years...Jordan
AND PLEASE....do not hire a coach who has not done at least 1 of the above!!!!

Honestly, I do not want Hurley..I think we could do better...But I would be happy...

Not only would I be confused as hell with a Williams hire, I would damn right pissed off!!

Posted this elsewhere but didn't realize a Williams thread popped up...

Damon Stoudamire, who had a very strong collegiate career and went on to more success in the NBA, has been an assistant at Memphis (added: after first being an assistant at Arizona, his alma mater). He's expected to be named the HC of Pacific today. That's a pretty normal and typical path for a former star player trying to get into coaching. Not going from ESPN to a P5 HC.

If he has a well thought-out plan similar to Ash, I would take him over Hurley. Played at the highest level in both college and NBA. Still young enough to relate to kids. Knows the landscape of what needs to change at his state university to be successful. Not a safe choice, but could be a home run. He will also have access to a ton of advice from Coach K and others. Will kill it recruiting wise.

After the Knicks Bill Bradley decided to go into politics. He went back home to Missouri and asked the machine how'd that go. They said they'd put him up for county commissioner. He said he was thinking a little higher than that. They said you've got to pay your dues.

So Bradley comes to NJ and we send him to the US Senate. Because going to Princeton and playing across the Hudson River is almost like being from NJ right?

Why doesn't Jay look for a job in Durham NC?

Ash was an assistant at a top program, I can have a plan too, anyone can...you need experience coaching, this isnt Rutgers Newark where you talk a good talk and get hired

I'm trying to keep an open mind on Williams but I really don't want him cutting his teeth at Rutgers. Also, if he wanted to coach so bad, why isn't he on Duke's staff? I do think he would recruit very well from day one. Too much risk for what we need.

I might be free next fall, never really played or coached.

I went to Rutgers and could talk up a good game. I'd take the $1.5 mm for three years until I imploded. Maybe they'll hire me?

Williams? An analyst with no coaching experience? If Hobbs hires him for the money they are talking about, he should be immediately fired, the RAC should be razed and the earth salted where it stood. The team should be disbanded and all mentions of basketball ball should be erased from the Rutgers record books.

Yes, but I don't think you would interview well. Let's give Hobbs a modicum of credit for his experience in hiring excellent people. Williams killed the Interview, and now he's in play. Kudos to Hobbs for giving him an interview!!

When you have a basketball program in the dumpster for decades the responses from some fans on possible head coach options fits into the narrative of Rutgers going nowhere fast.

Please explain how he walks into a recruits house and sells RU over top schools when he chose Duke over RU?

How does Sean Miller tell a recruit to go to Arizona when he chose to go to Pitt? Or Alford when he chose to go to Indiana? Or Willians when he was at Kansas?

If this logic meant something based on reality, Duke wouldn't be Duke. And let's not forget. Hurley chose to go to Seton Hall.

I want Hurley. I really believe he as the keen understanding & the work ethic & experience to turn this thing around. Personally, I love his fiery personality. The kids that play for him love him. Speaks volumes that Biruta went back to play for him after the Rice fiasco. That said - I don't think he is coming. Would not be surprised if he parlays this into a raise/extension at URI. Danny is a loyal guy. I am sure he is struggling with the decision.

Personally - I like Jay. Have had multiple positive interactions with him & believe he would bring energy & passion to the job. Not sure what he said in the interview - but his plan around staff is what will sell people one way or another. Who will be the experienced ex-head coach on his bench? Tough to judge the potential of the hire without that bit of info.

And then convinced our best player to transfer out? And we were a lot better then! This had to be just a courtesy talk by Hobbs. Not sure why I'm getting so annoyed by this.

Forget Williams, can we entertain this as a stand alone idea?

Then we could concentrate on football, wrestling and soccer.

Hobbs smart to meet with him only to get insight on the broader college basketball landscape, nothing more. Courtesy meeting for learning purposes only. The idea that he would be considered as a serious candidate right now is frankly terrifying.
