Not saying i'm a proponent of his hiring but I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand either.

Has never recruited-I bet that outside of somebody the likes of Izzo, Calipari, Self etc he'd be able to recruit as well or better in NJ as anybody else mentioned as candidates thus far.

Has never been an assistant coach- Being a smart guy, a student of the game as well as a former floor general at the highest levels balances all of that out to a large degree in my opinion. Not to mention your work is analyzing the game.

Has never been a head coach- See above. And there is precedence. Chris Mullin, Jason Kidd as well as the coach of the NBA's top team are a few examples.

Has never managed a team, coaches, college kids, academics, recruiting. Nothing-Again I think when you played at the program he did, for the kind of coach that he did; that much of that stuff is just running things by the examples you not only saw first-hand but also lived by yourself.

Once again I am not here calling for his hire, but I am saying that I don't think the mere thought of it is absolutely insane either.

Disagree, because if that was the case Calipari would have won a title every season at Kentucky.
He is a great recruiter and gets star players to buy into playing defense, but his offense is purely based on talent and that is why he doesn't have the championships he should.

Huh? in 7 years at UK, he has been in 4 Final Fours and won or came in 2nd in his conference division every year.

He has 1 title in 7 years. With the level of talent he brings in he should have won more. However, he is a mediocre in game coach and his offensive coaching is putrid. He gets super talented kids to buy into playing defense, and I give him credit for that, but the idea that coaching is overrated in basketball is nonsense.

I don't want Williams at all. But if Hobbs is stupid enough to hire him, he better get his buddy Johnny Dawkins to be the top assistant so at least we have someone with coaching experience.

300 schools playing D1 basketball and he has 4 final fours in 7 years , 1 NCAA championship at UK, plus was runner-up at Memphis and you think he can't coach? You're the one saying he is a mediocre coach. If Jay Williams can coach half as good and bring in half the talent that would be better than anything we have had at RU since Tom Young.

I don’t think Jay Williams would be a good choice due to making the jump from zero coaching to big time college basketball, but I give Hobbs genuine credit for his creativity and outside the box thinking in interviewing him at all. Interesting guy. Hurley would be a great choice (hotheadedness concerns aside) and could be just what we need, but I’d still be truly surprised if he ended up coming here. It might be more money (maybe not that much more), but the risk is HUGE. This place is a career –killer if ever there was one, the ultimate graveyard for coaches. Look at RU’s MBB history in the past 25 years. Perhaps unique in college BB in terms of coaching attrition. Hurley has a nice thing going at URI next year and beyond, in a league and media market that isn’t quite as frenetic and judgmental as RU’s, and it’s a perfect springboard to the big time for Hurley in a couple of years. If he comes, fabulous, but I’m not getting my hopes up. We fans are so battered that everything gets magnified—the rumors, the wishful thinking, the vehemence of the opposition to some hypothetical candidates. I think that in the end, our choices will be greatly restricted by 1) the career risk and enormity of the rebuilding job, and 2) monetary constraints, as well as, of course, any candidate’s perceptions about the likelihood and timing of new facilities. So, in the end, Hurley would be a fine choice, if Pat Hobbs can pull it off. Lotsa pressure on him, for sure. But we';; probably end up with a somewhat flawed compromise choice like Masiello.

No chance Williams is a serious candidate. I'd be shocked. Bottom line is this is an OPEN position, at a state school, so resumes submitted based on a public posting almost all have to be considered for interviewing. I think the papers are just exposing the Williams "interview" as another way to get "clicks" right now but, hey, I could be wrong.

The whole idea of Williams being a serious candidate is absurd. However, The difference with Williams is that he actively recruited our star player to leave us and become only the second transfer accepted by Coach K. When we missed out on Williams we signed Todd Billet so that was not a bad consolation prize but Williams hurt us twice. Losing Jones absolutely killed Bannon who I still think was the one coach that was building some momentum in recruiting. Plus, how entitled can you be to think you can just take over this job with his total lack of coaching experience. It's insulting.

Eddie benefited greatly from being a well liked favorite son. There were no "Dick Must Go" chants, "FireWaters" banners or "Page Must Go" buttons sold by students at games. The results were so appallingly bad that he had to go. He was treated with great respect by the fans in my opinion. He was judged by results and never attacked personally or personally embarrassed by being booed like others would have.

Jay Williams is a big name, charismatic personality, and knows a lot about college basketball. Those are all strong positives. But he has never coached, and coaching college basketball involves a ton of practical knowledge and knowledge of how to coach. Williams is not likely to have any of that. Thus, I don't think he is a serious candidate at this time. But he is on TV doing college basketball 24/7, so why not make an ally out of him? Which is, I think, just what Hobbs is doing, and wisely so.

The Dawkins/Williams deal that bac mentioned is a realistic possibility. Could possibly work, who knows?

But, if you want somebody with 40 years' worth of gym rat knowledge of the ins and outs of the game, that is Hurley, Lonergan, and Masiello (well, 30 with Masiello). And Hurley may lead that group.

Two points on Hurley: 1) As much as folks are drooling over his practice session video, I have real reservations. He has a punitive approach to practice, and only smiled once, very briefly, to someone in an office. Does not seem to be much joy in the workouts. I know there will be a lot of "we are going to war" chest thumping idiocy in response to such a comment, but at some level, you have to have some fun playing the game. 2) Why is Jay Williams rejecting us seen as a deal-breaker, but Hurley rejecting us twice isn't?

So everyone is tripping all over themselves for Hurley, who played at Seton Hall, and dumping on JWill because he opted to play at Duke, which was the #1 program in the country? In what universe does that make sense. In addition, while I am not nearly sold on JWill as a coach I guarantee every HS kid in America knows who he is and the fact that he was National Player of Year and won a National Championship. He's on ESPN every night. They also know that he was a lottery pick and could flat out ball. You don't think that stuff matters to kids? Maybe he needs to sit on the bench as an assistant for a few years and that's a fair point. But, this other stuff about going to Duke over Rutgers is dumb when the leading candidate when to the Hall.

No one cares that Hurley went to SHU because he has coaching chops...not a kid looking for a handout to a power 5 job

Furthermore most recruits were 2-3 years old when Jay was relevant

You know stating your opinion does not make it fact. Once again I am waiting to be blown away by Hurley's coaching chops? Am i suppose to be impressed by Wagner or him keeping a middling URI team in the middle?

And I love you keep saying Jay Williams is looking for a hand out. You keep saying it but it doesn't make it true.

During the years that Danny Hurley was in high school, and, one would assume, evaluating college programs, Seton Hall went to the NCAAs three times. They made it to the second round when he was a freshman, to over time of the national championship game as a sophomore, and to the Elite Eight when he was a senior. If he had an opportunity to play for a program like that, he made a pretty good choice.

lol Jay has never coached and he wants a job at head coach of a Big 10 school..he has no qualifications whatsoever. There are million ex college players out there too. The annointing of him as a successsful recruiter and coach is baffling since he never did and we just ran out a loyal son after 3 years who played here and in the NBA and brought more connections to the table with the NBA then Little Jay could dream of
