These programs canning coaches after 2 seasons are doing it wrong

Happy Veteran's Day and ty for your service, btw.
Thank you, and based off your comments I’m assuming you’ve been in or are still in, so happy Veterans Day to you as well... and again I could t agree with you more on your previous statement about having to milk every ounce of potential out of what you have... and as I’m sure you’ve seen within the ranks with some individuals it doesn’t matter how much you try to push and motivate you just can’t get them to give that effort that is needed... the army isn’t for everyone, and Id say it’s a similar concept for playing football...

True, but the best leaders I have seen have been able to take the guys that have that potential, that may be upset about the way things are going, or may not like the new leadership style, and make them believe and see how they can better their life/career/situation in general by buying in.

It's easy to talk about it, but it is not an easy thing to do. I've seen good transitions, bad transitions, and everything in between, but it is always the leaders that get the buy-in from from the guys that have the potential that Excel. Rarely do the my way or the highway guys ever get the most out of their people.

I'm preaching to the choir on this as I'll bet dollars to donuts that you know all of this already. You're exactly right about the Army and football not being right for everyone, too.

I’m really starting to grow a true hatred for a lot of the loud mouth fans screaming for us to fire Frost, I’m also growing a very good understanding of why Bo despised our fan base so much... I serious get the frustration of not winning but all of this “but, but our recruit rankings are better” what ever BS you wanna come up with to fit your agenda, it all gets so old... I shouldn’t have to sit here and point out the obvious of how far our program has fallen, the whole we have better recruits than Minnesota, sure maybe on paper that’s true, but the games are not played on paper, watching that game I seen the Minnesota kids driving through tackles I seen them playing to the whistle and I never seen them lay down...
Nebraska has/ had some chronic issues and a lot of it is in the mental department with our upper class man.... I’m not here to pump sunshine and rainbows all over coach Frost... but I’m also not going to give up on him after he is only two years from unanimously being named coach of the year... by his peers... Frost is a legit coach, and yes he still has room to grow... but he will get there as long as we give him the time to get there... man what a bunch of babies we have in our fan base...

I don't think anyone wants him fired, but the whole team is playing bad football. That's ultimately on Frost, so I'm going to *****. We lost to Purdue. I want to see the team improve.

Oh absolutely I have seen some absolute train wrecks from the my way or the highway guys... I’ve also seen the same train wreck from the I’ll be your best friend guys... the best leaders are able to conform to the situation and as you said be able to get that desired result from everyone... the best leaders are able to walk the very fine line of my way or the highway, and I’m here for you... you have to draw that line in the sand, let the joes know what will be tolerated and the biggest key of all is hold that standard, you hold anyone and everyone accountable to that standard... every situation is different, and that’s what I let my soldiers know, and my other NCOs... I let them know that I encourage them to make “command decisions” but to know if the wrong decision is made then there will be consequences and when they know that up front then they tend to think of the repercussions before they take the action... some will test your stance, and once you get all outlying information and vet, then you discipline as you the situation requires... some discipline will be severe, some will be a little slap on the wrist, none will be based on perceived performance or relationship... a leader needs to lead by example, hold yourself to a higher standard then you expect from your subordinates, you need to train guide and mentor, and you have to find that balance between sincere and hard ***... being a leader is not easy, and it will require you to take the fall for a lot of things... you HAVE to own it, even if it’s not yours... then the crap tumbles down hill after all it is your program you are the one responsible at the end you should have been trusting but verifying things were going right... the way I found to gain trust and confidence is to not just say I have my joes backs, but to show them... I will take the fall when **** goes south... then once out of public eye, I dish out the required punishment behind closed doors... I tell my joes when I discipline it’s not personnel it purely Professional

But this was not a winning program, we had losing season in 2 of the 3 previous years

while technically true - those with a little football knowledge know that the team Frost and staff inherited was really a 6 or 7 win team and not 4-8. We have regressed when we likely won’t reach 6-7 wins even in year 2

Let's also be realistic that Riley's last season would not have been 4-8 if the ax had not dropped on Eikhorst and it was obvious the coaching staff was all going to be dismissed at the end of the season also. Chances are very good that season would have been at least 7-7. However we are where we are now and it is not where we should be over halfway thru Frost's second season. There are some problems and we can only hope Frost can fix them. But please stop saying this is all on the Riley players. One of our best players right now is a Riley player and this is indisputable!

I'm tired of blaming Riley too, and I don't disagree at all that NU has underachieved this year. But someone please show me the two or three losses the 2017 team suffered that magically become wins if Shawn Eichorst doesn't get fired on Sept. 21:

2017 Schedule

The blame Riley stuff is getting old, and Frost definitely needs to own the current team's performance. But Shawn Eichorst got fired because the 2017 team sucked, not the other way around. They had four winnable games after he got canned, and won three of them.

i guess I can only speak for myself on this, but I’d like to think that there isn’t a lot of blame Riley talk on here... I can understand how some of my post may come across like it’s a blame Riley post, but that’s not the intent... at the end of the day this is Frosts team... the intent with my posts are always that the issues are more then just Frost... he can only do so much... at some point the fans need to also realize that our players did not develop under the Riley regime our Highest rated prospects either flopped or transferred... at some point the players need to be held accountable for their own efforts as well, Frost should own the failures in the public eye, then hold players accountable behind closed doors... I don’t blame frost for bringing his UCF staff here with him, he had a staff he trusted, and a staff that obviously worked, worked well enough to go undefeated and to beat an Auburn team in their bowl game... I still don’t think this is a bad staff and I don’t think the product of this year or last year warrants a coaching change... once moral issues like this takes hold they are very hard to fix... and it takes a ton of work from the coaches and players... and if one side isn’t putting in the effort it can be very detrimental... I say all of that to say no this isn’t a Riley issue, he may have got the ball rolling, but Frost is the man now... but this isn’t just a Frost issue either, he is responsible for doing the hard work in trying to point the ship in the right direction, the players are responsible for steering the wheel... he can bark the direction all day but if they don’t turn the wheel in the right direction or even turn it at all it won’t won’t get better... The players at some point have to take responsibility just like HCSF has to

Yes everyone's going to have a different opinion on the situation Frost inherited and the amount of improvement fans should expect in Year 2. That's a more-than-fair debate, and I certainly expected to see a bit more progress at this point. But there seems to be notion developing that the 2017 team was well on its way to a .500 or better season if only the AD hadn't been canned, and I don't think the facts support it.

Has nothing to do with the AD being fired .... there were people who said that with the proper schemes, etc (ie coaching) that the 2017 team should have won 2 or 3 more games. Maybe those claiming this don’t know what they are talking about but that was the claim

Okay, thanks. I associated your comment with the other one I replied to above, and thought you were making the same point. Sorry for that.

I think people dont understand what Riley having to hire Diaco did to that team. Riley may still be here if that hadn't taken place.

I get the Riley didn’t develop the talent argument. The team underachieved and the players didn’t become as good as they could have. Where that argument fails with me is that now, nearly 2 years later, the vast majority of the players on this team have been in the Frost system longer than they were in the Riley system. So it is either a talent issue or this staff isn’t developing talent either.

I guess I don’t have an opinion on that one way or the other, and that’s because the reality is we were what 4-8 in 2017? That’s the reality to me it doesn’t matter what any one of us feel our record should have been... and for the sake of keeping an even playing field it doesn’t matter if the AD was fired, that was HCMR responsibility to get us the best record he could have got us... if you’re worth your weight in salary as a HC then you need not worry about a change in the athletic department... coaches that win will stay through all that mess... HCMR needs to be held accountable for his failures Too... AD got fired not because of how the football team was doing... that may have played a part in it, but the bigger issues was the sheer amount of piss poor hires he made and lack of leadership that got him fired... all HCMR had to do was win games, if we had the talent to do so then it should have happened... it didn’t so he got fired... now my opinion on if we have talent now I just don’t see it outside of a few players... like I said a majority of HCMR’s top recruits just didn’t develop or they transferred out....

people who should know have said the 2017 should have been a 6-7 win team ... we even played Wisconsin close until the final quarter ... we followed that up with 4 wins and maybe 5 this year

I can understand where you get that argument... what I’d say to that is with players not developing at the expected rate it would be like take some of our freshman lineman and saying they’re juniors now... this makes sense in my head so work with me as I try to explain my thoughts... and I’ll apologize in advance since I’m sure it won’t make it to this post the same way I see this in my head...

But just because they are juniors and seniors it doesn’t mean that they are developed like juniors or seniors should be... is it a talent issue? Is it still a development issue? I don’t know it’s hard to tell with the players that were here through that regime... I can tell you that Martinez seems to have regressed so maybe that points to a development issue still... but the underlying issue is still just too many years of no development, when you don’t develop you skill set stays at the freshman level for the whole time you’re stuck in that system... so maybe once frost got here the first year was all teaching them proper technique and getting them used to actually working out, second year you start your baseline and see slight improvement, third you should see a lot of gains, so your Sophomores juniors that were there before still playing like freshman maybe only developed to like a RS sophomore or junior... like I have said I don’t know what the issues are or how to fix them... it could be players not putting in effort it could be coaches still not demanding perfection or holding people accountable but I doubt it’s the later based on HCSFs mentors

I think when you look at the situation in Arkansas I don't have a problem with them dropping the ax on Morris. Bielema's last year at Arkansas was bad, but Morris has taken this thing to new depths. You are in the toughest conference and division in college football, you can not be getting trucked by Western Kentucky.

I took the last 5 or 6 days off from the forums here, so maybe I am wrong, but is the a ton of talk about firing Frost? If there is I guess I am wrong, but no that isn't going to solve anything in the short term for Nebraska.

Now with that said, Frost has put himself and his team in an unenviable position. They could very well be in the cellar looking up at every other team in their division at the end of the season. I know NW is terrible this year, but they were in the Big10 Championship Game last season. Nebraska was for sure looking up at Iowa and Wisconsin, but you have let Minnesota, Purdue and Illinois jump you in the standings of your division. Now you have to look at jumping a lot more teams in your own division to get back to relevance.

People can defend Frost all they want, but you should not be losing ground within your own division to teams like Purdue and Illinois, especially in your seconds season coaching at Nebraska.

I was visiting the Florida State message board to see what their latest is in their coaching search. This week they are starting the vetting process with the following coaches:

PJ Fleck, Mark Stoops, Scott Satterfield, Matt Campbell, Mike Norvell and the coordinators at Clemson.

Yeah, this isn't going to go the way that Florida State fans were hoping for. When Jimbo left they should have spent more time finding the right guy instead of rushing to making a replacement because of the early signing period.

Watch Florida State hire Mark Stoops. Rinse and repeat a coaching search again for them in a few years, if not sooner.
I'd rather have Mark Stoops than Scott Frost. Frost had one great season. He has done nothing else in any other year to show he is elite in any way.

It's the correct thing to do in my opinion, if you have a losing hand, better cut your losses short and move on. It can't get any worse.

No for profit business or professional sports franchise would hold on to obvious losing hand for so long. Face it, we have a below average Sun Belt Staff. We did nothing wrong hiring Frost as he was the hottest coach available at the time, but bring the whole UCF staff was the first thing we did wrong. Too Bad Frost didn't work out.
