  1. Nebraska was the hottest program in the country in 1997, akin to Alabama or Clemson now.
  2. Nebraska should have conducted a nation-wide search and hired the hottest young coach, regardless of money.
  3. What Nebraska instead did was let Osborne name his buddy the successor, despite no proof he could lead an elite program.
  4. Solich couldn't get his staff of angry old codgers to follow his vision, so his hands were basically tied.
  5. Then AD Pederson rightly wanted to fire Solich after running the program into the ground in 2002, but stupidly agreed to let Solich "fix" it.
  6. When Solich mostly righted the ship, Pederson stupidly fired Solich without a successor already in place.
  7. Pederson couldn't find anybody after firing a nine-win coach, so he had to settle on a guy who didn't want to coach college.
  8. Callahan thought college football was like the NFL, where you can have a 10-6 record and still make the playoffs.
  9. After firing Callahan, somebody thought the one-year-wonder Pelini was somehow a "Nebraska Guy" now.
  10. Pelini had already demonstrated questionable self control, anger issues, and a dislike for the media as a defensive coordinator.
  11. Pelini did win nine games every year, but he was a huge douche, and he got prison raped by every good team he played.
  12. The guy who came after Pelini, I can't remember his name right now, was 6-6 coach at Oregon State, not at all qualified to bring NU back.
  13. But thankfully, we waited for Frost to mature enough that he can now be the savior.

I meant players he actually coached up and played significant time while he was there.

If taking recruiting into account, its Suh.
Bos early success was because of Callahan. Wouldn't of made it to '05 if he was hired instead of Callahan

Yep, Callahan did bring in a bunch of top talent for us. Dude could recruit, that’s for dam sure. The year he got fired, he had a top 4-5 class going at the time...Definitely the best class I ever seen us get but that fell apart when he was fired. I’ll say this, had he not been so loyal to Kevin Cosgrove...Callahan might have done something. Give him a top tier Defense Coordinator...then who knows. Bill Callahan is hell of a Oline coach, pretty good play caller, definitely a top tier recruiter but his loyalty to Cosgrove got him **** canned. Thats his own fault...no one else’s.

Yes. Personality clash for sure but like I said in an earlier post Bos defensive mind and Bill's offensive mind?...

Bo Pelini’s defenses where definitely good enough for the Big 12. I joked before on Callahan posts months ago that Pelini would have been an excellent DC for Callahan. But I’m not sure he’d stayed...he wanted the HC gig but Peterson went Callahan instead. That’s one area we will never know. But it may have worked out...just as long as Bo didn’t kill Billy...;)

Nope.
You dont understand how a successful program operates if you think callys fix was as simple as a different DC.

Bro Bo basically won a Big 12 title with no offense and players Callahan recruited on D. Till the refs overturned it.

We may not have won any Nebraska Way or role model of the year awards with those two running the show but had they paired up we'd have won a conference title for sure and probably a national title as well.

With the kinds of players Cally in the hook we would have been better in O than LSU was when LSU won the title with Pelini as DC.

So by this post I can reasonably infer that Nick Saban<Bill Callahan.

Callahan sucked at running a program, period. This revisionist history needs to stop. He was a horrible head coach, and even more horrible considering it was at a place like nebraska. Had no business being here.

Pelini would have been a colossal disaster if Callahan hadn't stocked the shelves with NFL talent. Especially on defense.

Overall forgettable, but we saw how poorly Bo recruited, without his talent infusion I think we would be a complete laughingstock now
That talent didn't do anything without proper coaching. Asante turned from one of the worst defensive backs in the country to a pretty solid player in 1 year. Bo had a much better coaching staff in 2009 and 2010than he did when he left. Sanders was a phenomenal DB coach. Say what you will about him, but Carl Pelini was a good position coach and the defense was much better with him than without. I thought Shawn Watson did a much better job with Taylor Martinez than Beck did. The quality of play started falling when these coaches left and we replaced them with very mediocre coaches.

The defense was pathetic.
Defenses at Nebraska since 2000 have been mostly dependent on schedule. Cally played 7 top 25 offenses in 2007...there were seasons where Bo only played 1 or 2...and he gave up 50-60 in those games. Cally never should have been hired in the first place, and he had ZERO experience building a college staff, but he was hired and he did some things really well. The really stupid thing is Frost is the most experienced coach to be hired by Nebraska since 1962...how does a blue-blood school, with 50 million on the line every year, not hire someone who has actually coached college football before?

I don't see any evidence to back up your statement that he had a great staff.

Marvin Sanders: HS coach
Carl Pelini: Disgraced, cronie hire, Youngstown state
Bo Pelini: Youngstown State
Mike Ekeler: Special Teams at Kansas
John Papuchis: Inside LB coach North Carolina
Rick Kaczinski: Domestic Assault, not coaching\
Barney Cotton: Offensive Coordinator UNLV(strangely the most successful of the bunch?)

I added some other guys like Kaz to show that Bo had pretty poor instincts when it came to coaches.

Watson was a Cally hire and is respected around the game but Bo wanted him replaced ASAP
Ted Gilmore was retained by Bo but was hired by Cally...won WR coach of the year at USC...
For comparison, guys like Jay Norvell(OU), Kevin Steele(Clemson), Craig Bohl(Wyoming) have been able to move from tough situations at NU to show their quality throughout the industry...Bo's hires have found little traction which can only mean they aren't very good.

What Bo did have was the best DT in NCAA history and 3 top 15 classes from Callahan to play with...

Alfonzo Dennard, Prince Amukamara, Eric Hagg, and Dejon Gomes were all 3 stars. Marvin Sanders was one of the best assistant coaches we've ever had. Just look at the way those guys played, it's insane how good they were. Even looking at teams like Alabama and Clemson, I don't see their DB's play as consistently good as ours were in 2009 and 2010.

Was the hiring of Callahan better for the future of Nebraska football than hiring Bo Pelini (who was proven to be too immature, and a below average coach)?
I don't know the answer to this question, but IMO bc was immature in a lot of ways, too

Thank BC for Greg Austin too. Wouldn't be an O-line coach here if he wasn't brought here by Billy boy

Holy crap dude, I'm not saying he was the next TO. All I'm saying is he was the right hire at the right time, we needed to update our offense. I dont disagree with the Pelini hire either, we were weak on defense.
yeah you’re definitely on crack. He was the worst hire we’ve ever made for multiple reasons. Biggest reason is he tried to destroy all our traditions and barred alumni from being around the program. I hope to god you were piss drunk when you posted this

I feel the same way about Pelini and you do about Callahan. I'm not going to spend all day defending him, as I think there are more productive ways to spend my day. I will say that at least I had hope during the Cally days. With Pelini, it was as good as it was going to get. Once Cally's players had left we were in permanent mediocrity. Reminds me of Solich. The number one reason for our program's decline? Osborne naming Solich as his successor.

Zac Taylor was the best thing to come out of the clownahan era.
And Suh and Prince and Roy and ........LOTS of great players recruited and signed by Callahan. Bill Callahan is not the devil. He was not a good fit for NU at all BUT the guy is a very good coach. A family member of mine knew him when he was in Lincoln and said that he's a really good guy. He didn't handle the fan and media scrutiny well and few of us would have either. He handled his dismissal in about as professional of a way as possible unlike some other guys.

Honestly there was no other way for us to go when Tom retired. We were going to struggle at some point. When you're at the top the only way is down. Naming Frank may have kept things going a little longer than a complete staff change. We need to stop blaming people and just look forward. Actually in hindsight, we probably would have been better off IF we had ridden Frank for the long term instead of terminating him. At some point, I think he would have figured out his staff and recruiting issues. He's got some really good assistants at Ohio. IF anything, SP is probably the scape goat. He could have probably made peace with Frank and helped him fix the recruiting issues.
The bottomline is that we are where now. Time to look forward with great optimism and not lose our minds if we don't win as many game as we expect from year to year.

If Callahan had gotten rid of Cosgrove after year 2 and upgraded his defensive staff, I think he would've been quite successful here. His loyalty to Cosgrove did him in. He and his staff could really recruit. Get enough solid coaches in here with that talent and he may have been able to parlay that into another NFL head coaching job. Alas he stuck too long with dead weight and had an AD people didn't like so it was over.

Oh Gawd......yeah, Clownahan had soooooo much talent that showed two losing seasons in four which couldn't be tolerated.

Clownahan & Smiling Mike had FOUR losing seasons in their seven years of being NU's HC.

Bo, who was between the sensational Clownahan & Smiling Mike had ZERO losing seasons in his seven years as NU's HC.

So yeah, Bo sucked!!
