Hank is stepping down as the University of Nebraska President ... wow.
Things that make you go hmmmm..... It will be interesting to see the why of that move. Hopefully it's because he's gotten an attractive offer from another institution closer to his home. I never was wild about the guy.

President unexpectedly stepping down, rumors about the AD who has only been there a couple of years .... from the outside it appears like chaos in Lincoln and a lot of uncertainty .... hopefully Hoiberg is inked or events could certainly give a potential coach with options pause.

Still seems like bad timing to announce this today. Couldn't it have waited until after we hire a basketball coach? If Hoiberg is not a done deal, this just adds more speculation and uncertainty to the situation.

Yeah I don't disagree there. I just know there have been rumblings for awhile about this.

One of the things mentioned in convincing Frost it was the right time to come back was the leadership that was in place with Moos Green and Bounds. Two of them may be gone soon.

I fail to see how this connects with Hoiberg in any way. If he's doesn't come, it's not because the university president decided to leave. Remember too that the president is over the entire system, it's really the chancellor that is more important to UNL specifically.

Rumors across staff is fear of even more cuts since State aid will be completely in shambles now with focus on State infrastructure rebuild from flooding. He will have an uphill battle.

That might be true, but I can't imagine this affected Bounds decision given that the flooding just happened.

Bounds is pretty heavily involved with Athletics, and according to OWH, had been heavily involved with finding Miles' replacement.

Don't give a rat's ***. Means nothing. NU is a second or third tier academic institution. I am sure he got a better offer to go elsewhere. We will now hire yet another journeyman administrator to try and figure out how to run a modern university on the ******** support it gets from the Unicameral.

This means nothing for Moos or anything else. Nothing to see here...

The infrastructure damaged by the recent flooding is going to be replaced in large part by federal dollars. When the construction starts there will be a HUGE boost to the state's economy from sales/excise taxes and wages. The short term pain of the people damaged will benefit the state to at least some degree.

As an academic and NU alum, I find Pennsy’s take on point. NU grades out to be second tier, but support from the Unicam has been parsimonious. Have no idea what Bound’s motivation is, but College heads aren’t jazzed up when you asked them to do the same or more with less.

this is true ... it is far behind the other BIG universities in academic rigor. Much of college is what you put into it, but it is disappointing that for state residents seeking a highly selective academic environment they have to leave the state. Many surrounding states offer at least one high end school in addition to the state university.

Iowa - Grinnell
Minnesota - Carleton, Macalester
Wisconsin - UW, Lawrence University,
Missouri - Wash U
Illinois - University of Chicago, Northwestern
Michigan - U of M,
Indiana - ND, Rose Hulman
Ohio - Oberlin, Kenyon, Dension
Pa - Carnegie Mellon, Penn, Bryn Mawr, ...

elite students looking for elite schools have to leave the state which makes it less likely they will come back

Sad but true. State of Nebraska never has supported education like adjoining states. Forget about competing academically with other Big 10 universities!

Maybe you should check adjoining States before making that claim. I live in Kansas and we have KU, KSU, Fort Hays, Emporia, Washburn (municipal), Pittsburg State, Wichita State, 19 community colleges, and five technical colleges. They have been getting cut for years and the secondary has sued for more money twice in 15 years.

Then the money must be going somewhere because Nebraska taxes are outrageous. We were thinking of retiring back to Nebraska but a detailed cost analysis showed we might as well stay in California. For instance, NE's income tax rate is lower, but they fully tax Social Security, which CA does not. Property tax in Douglas County is 2%. It is 0.73% here in San Bernardino County.

I found a 2013 chart that shows NE spends 23.3% on higher ed, 33.6% on something called "other" and 17.9% on Medicaid. I would be interested in knowing what "other" is and how many people critical of what NE spends on higher ed voted for Medicaid expansion.

KU, Colorado, Missouri, Iowa - talking about the large state universities....then go to the Big Ten: Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Indiana, Purdue, Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State, even Rutgers. All of these Big Ten schools are much higher rated academically than NU.
Easy observation and conclusion.....

by the way, I'm proud of my NU degree. However, maybe we haven't kept up. Oh, but no problem funding the football and other athletics at NU. Oh wait,
the athletic department gives $$ to the University.

Wonder if he's heading back to the Univ. of MS. Their Chancellor (Vitter) stepped down in January. Not sure if a replacement has been named or if they are in the search stage.

Look, when I walk around the UNL campus I see new building after new building. When we were looking at colleges for my kids I see HUGE advances in the engineering college and in particular the JDEdwards program. NOBODY can tell me that the state isn't spending enough money at UNL and UNO. I know profs like to ***** about their pay but somebody needs a reality check. IF you want to make big money, go get a job in the private sector and make something. For heaven's sake, the benefits, work conditions and job security college profs enjoy are ridiculous.

What does a 3 bedroom ranch style house sell for in San Bernardino County? I bought a nice one (1500 sq ft) for my kid with an attached double garage on a nice lot near Aksarben in Omaha for 190k. I suspect other is state highways, state aid to education (public schools), department of social services etc etc.
