Probably the worst thing I hate about this offense

the run/pass threat didn't work well enough for Osborne because even in those days the recruiting inbalance made it almost impossible for us to get a good enough QB and good enough RB's and good enough WR's to threaten the schools who could recruit the kind of speed to defend that.

So Osborne added the QB run into that mix as his innovation -- Power, Option, passing enough to threaten the safeties and force them to make tough decisions.

The option is slow. Pitches go bad QB's get killed. Hell. Frost said explicitly he had only two QB's ready yesterday.
One coming off an injury and one injured in his first play. No disrespect to Matt Masker.

At least someone admits recruiting imbalance. I hope you acknowledge it still exists today.

Riley was too dependent on the pass.

You're never going to be happy with the style of play under Coach Frost. It's not a ball control offense that we are used to. It's going to be a lot like Oregon. To win we will have to outscore our opponents, as our defense won't shut anyone down. You can forget about smashmouth football. Those days are long gone and Frost didn't come here to do that. Sorry.

Conference Championships. You can forget about those.

If it comforts you, it is many other head coaches around the country that run this offense. Not just Frost.

Not sure what you mean by your comments on the option (in current vernacular, I wrap zone read concepts into "option")

the recruiting imbalance is even worse today. which is why I talk about needing cutting edge innovation in our coaching. Wiscy is more innovative than Iowa (Iowa always going to be a second tier school with their utter lack of innovation), but even Wiscy isn't going to win anything important.

For us to win, we need a system that will bring cutting edge concepts and let us use talent that may not be as highly ranked by others, including figuring out how to make walk-ons useful for us -- that is very similar to what Osborne faced and how he addressed the problem

without debating his post, there are people who used to post a long time ago before the likes appeared on this site.

My post count reset for some reason when they updated to the “like” system. I don’t know exactly how many I’ve had here because all Rivals posts showed (I have 24k on the soundoff board) up but once they changed my total post count no longer showed up here and I was starting from scratch.

Actually the inside zone which Frost/Kelly build on is intended to be very physical, it’s often not even a true read option as usually they want the RB with the ball. People don’t realize RB’s like Blount and Stewart/Freeman were larger more physical backs, they also had the smaller quicker guys but at their core they base the offense off the inside zone which is meant to be a physical, wear down the other team play. The problem this year is this requires excellent center play (center sets blocking assignments) and preventing penetration in the line. If they can get there then the defense starts to pinch which opens up the outside zone and counter game. No offense will be successful until they stop line penetration and get push, regardless of system.

Great points and exactly true - Kelly (and Frost) really need to establish the IZ in order to make the rest of the offense work.

I get that they will get better. Any style of play will look better with better recruiting and more game experience. I'm just not convinced that this style of play will win championships.

that's pretty much Alabama's game, and given the talent disparity, they will always beat us.. every single time

Bama is using the gun and zone concepts, not that unlike what Frost is trying with less tempo, they just have the OL to execute it.

Same thing was said about us in the 90’s, system isn’t the key. It is recruiting, execution and buy in. Osborne’s system on offense was about repetition and execution, but also experience and knowing how to adjust. Solich had the same playbook and talent early, but didn’t have the feel the Osborne did for calling a game, very few do. It will take time for Frost to get there.

A spread option offense wont win championships?

Sort of - I tend to think of what they are doing as putting the QB in the situation that makes them most comfortable (one of the questions about a QB competition a couple of years ago was going under center or in the gun).

Yep Frost and this offense have no history of success. Iowa style football is much more proven...

Dam right. Outside of all the ones that have of course. Malzahn, Myer, Kelly, Dabo all got lucky. And even Saban is move more toward a spread attack, what an idiot.

Yeah, if I’m not mistaking this style of offense has won 2 titles at Florida, 2 at Auburn, 1 at Ohio State and 1 at Clemson. It didn’t win Kelly any but he was a contender.

Sadly the best play yesterday might have been 1 wr, 3 TE, and Mazour(Sp?) running the wildcat straight up the middle with Martinez next to him. Do that 3 times and punt, or if you get a first down. Every 3 or 4 plays snap it martinez to attempt a deep ball to the receiver. We were so dominated that a gimmick offense might have gotten us to 100 yards.

For those of us that witnessed this, the Frost offense in year one at UCF was predictable, not fast liked it was advertised, the passing game consisted of a lot of bubble screens. To top it off: Frost started a freshman QB that could not hit hardly any target he aimed for.

I was thinking "this is oregon's offense?". Ugh.

We saw some in-game coaching mistakes too.

Year one was not impressive, and had reservations after the embarrassing bowl loss to arkansas st.

Then came the second year.

Nebraska will get better but year one is not the time for judgement. A loss is a loss no matter the score.

Let his offensive system evolve, upgrade the talent level, let the QB gain experience.
Well said. I think some of us realize this more than others.

The "we don't want to be Iowa or Wisconsin" argument is not working.
It does, being overly redundant in a conference full of redundancy is not a great goal for success. Especially when you are asking that from a staff that doesn’t have that style.

Right now we're suffering being Nebraska. Tell me again yesterday's score. ???

But, Iowa was also horrible their first season with Ferentz.

A 20 year system is going to have more smoothly running parts than the first season in a completely made over system.

Think before posting.

It is the system that won't work. The failure of the schematics are there for plain sight. When Osbornes option against good teams like Oklahoma didn't work … it was fugly. Just like 9/22/2018.

But, that is wrong, and is addressing none of the personnel issues I stated.

Osborne’s offenses ran the option pretty well once they figured out the type of personnel needed.

Tell what two or three FIVE stars are silent commits. The one's Ohio State is not going to get???
Yep, competing against everyone else for prototype OT’s, pocket passing QB’s and 6’4 WR’s, is our ticket back to the big time. I’m sure we will beat out everyone for those guys much easier than finding some tweeners that can run.

I'll make it easy for all you guys. Save these posts in your e-mail or Word doc. and rub it in like you never have to anybody. Rub it in over and over and over when Nebraska wins a Big Ten title with this offense.

Two or three years for personnel that changes every year. Most of the sacks were due to Michigan's speed.
Of course YOU could find the right guy to block when things are moving a hundred miles per hour.
Watchthe first few sacks. It aint that hard to figure out who needs blocking at that level.
