Hold on a minute. I have almost the EXACT OPPOSITE take now seeing him go to OSU. OSU is his backup plan if he doesn't get the starting job and has to face sitting behind Martinez? OSU has 6 freshman or sophomore QBs on the roster. ONE of those guys will probably start this year. That leaves Gebbia sitting behind SOMEBODY for at least 2 years more than likely. Gebbia leaving IMO wasn't completely about him being behind Martinez. IF that were the case he wouldn't transfer to a school with the QB situation OSU has. IF OSU was a thought out backup plan, it was a crappy one at best. Seeing this I think something else happened which would also explain why Frost said that he would handle things differently if he had it do over again. After finding out that Gebbia went to OSU....and knowing what I was told, it all comes together tonight. I think... In fact I am damn near positive, this kid had a bailout plan. I believe what this staff is selling on the whole Gebbia deal as probably the truth. That being said, Riley would have NOTHING to do with a transfer there. I wanted to put that to rest right now.
Once again, apologies....I have some egg on my face on this one.
EDIT: whole time is probably the wrong term to use. Probably more like the last few days he was here.
Actually, a senior is starting with a redshirt sophomore and true sophomore as back ups. His main competition has less or an equavilent amount of eligibility left. The starter and the two sophomore quarterbacks were not recruited Smith whereas Gebbia was while Smith was at Washington, so if anyone gets the “my guy” treatment it’ll be Gebbia.Hold on a minute. JC, you can't be serious. You don't think SF, MV, any of the other coaches, none of the football staffers, and no one in the AD knew the transfer rules? SF was at Oregon 7 years and OU runs on the same calendar OSU does. The only mistake Frostco made was trusting TG to stick it out no matter the outcome, and according to Mario, Gebs never gave him any reason to doubt TG. The coaches should have brought in some insurance, they didn't and that is on them. Just stop with all the other bs.NU did what they felt was best for them and they weren't ready for TG to do what was best for him. The staff got got, plain and simple. Not only did they not know he would transfer, I don't think they knew he could transfer.
It's clear now what should have been clear after spring: there weren't enough scholarship QBs on the roster. Two scholarship players at any position isn't enough to being a year of football. Vedral doesn't count because he's not eligible.
They need to get themselves to 3 scholly QBs not named Vedral. Andrew Bunch should not be one of them.

Senior is starting ..... for now. Either way, he'll be competing with 6 other young QBs for one spot. Gebbia had to have gotten some kind of promise from OSU's staff. I bet it was, however I fail to see how that changes anything. He would’ve been a fool not to have a safety net to fall back on.Looks like the perfect landing spot, you'd almost think it was planned.
Oh ok, since you're very sure and you told me to stop, I'll stop looking at the evidence right in front of our face. Frost and Verduzco have both admitted they didn't see it coming and would have handled it differently if they did.JC, you can't be serious. Can't be, Gebs wasn't leaving until SF treated him like crap.Wait a minute....you mean like a contingency PLAN???? ha ha ha
I think everyone will concede that the QB room needs to be deeper. But you stated that the staff "got got". Could you explain how the going about adding scholarship depth at QB was going to take place in the summer with two 4* guys competing for the spot, a 3* guy the staff was please with and another guy who ably backed up an All-American QB at UCF? Frost and Verduzco were in a bind. It was clear that their recruit was developing nicely and if things didn't fall into place with him, a second guy on the roster was more than talented enough to handle things. There was even a third less talented guy who did a nice job picking up the offense. Doubt very much that a good JUCO or grad transfer wants to come in just to run scout team. I guess they were to assume that Gebbia was a likely transfer and proceed with that in mind. But maybe Gebbia gave no inkling whatsoever that a transfer was in the cards, as his public pronouncements were always pro NU, pro Lincoln, team first. It now seems possible that was a bit of an Eddie Haskell act. Maybe they should have taken care of the issue at the end of Spring Ball and encouraged a Gebbia transfer then.NU did what they felt was best for them and they weren't ready for TG to do what was best for him. Sure it does, next year he gets to compete for the spot without a returning starter. He gets to compete in a pro style offense. His competition is mid teir with the top backups having less eligibilty or equivalent. The coach recruited him out of high school and he has a connection to Riley. It makes sense unless that’s not your narrative. I get that you’re not happy he transferred, but I don’t understand what is so hard to understand that this was in Gebbia’s best interest. Sucks for our depth, but it’s not his fault that his departure destroys our depth. We should’ve added a juco or two with a roster full of pro style QBs with two transferring by the end of spring ball. Everyone needs to move on and quit villainizing the KID.Senior is starting ..... for now. Either way, he'll be competing with 6 other young QBs for one spot. It's a free country, but the kid knew after Spring Ball that it was at least even money that he'd be second string. It wasn't as if the end result came out of left field. Is it all about the kid, or at some point (say the week before Game 1) does an obligation to teammates kick in?
Being up from about that with your coaches about your intentions wrt possibly hitting the transfer market is probably not something that could be done. Hey, I might bail if I don't start, but while I'm competing for the spot I'll be taking a roster spot and providing a disincentive to possible transfers by my very presence on the depth chart.I have said all along that he probably had a contingency plan. He was going to try to win the job in Lincoln and if that didn't work out he was going to go somewhere else.

But Gebbia apparently did the opposite by giving the impression that he was 100% in with the school and the team. I was on the Gebbia bandwagon just a week or so ago. Perhaps he was on the NU bandwagon until it became inconvenient to be there.

Exactly when would the optimal luring of quality, age appropriate (can help now) QB talent have been. In winter, when the roster had POB, TB and AM? After Spring Ball, when the news was that three young QBs had performed well in Frost's offense? During the summer, when that fact still held?No one said to do it over the summer. But the fact remains that the QB room had POB, Gebbia and Bunch as returning players. All 3 guys were brought in by Riley and company. Frost got Martinez and decided to take a chance with what he had, didn't like what was out there enough to pursue it, or people weren't interested in coming to Nebraska.
Also nobody seems to be considering that maybe TG felt he won that competition and that what we've all been hearing--that AM's running ability gives him an extra advantage--made TG feel like he was the last guy to be told that he was an orange in a Best Apple contest the whole time. Why is it so hard to believe that he was 100% on board while in the heat of the battle, then when you look at the situation after the decision is made, you realize there is no chance you will ever see the field? Then things change and you put that contingency plan into motion.
And yet there went Gebbia to OrSt where there are all those QBs on the roster. And there went Joe Burrow to LSU where there were 4-5 QBs on the roster when he got there. It's almost like kids will go to a new school even if there are already numbers there because they think they can win the job.Exactly when would the optimal luring of quality, age appropriate (can help now) QB talent have been. The fact is they weren't concerned, did not factor in that Gebbia might skate and by all accounts, Gebbia did not give them any reason to suspect such. Free country and so on, the kid has to do what's in his best interest, yada yada. Not exactly sure when the time is, but at some point, unless the kid was treated unfairly, there is an implicit commitment to be part of the team for the season. Not to run off to a school that hasn't started classes yet cause you can claw back a year of eligibility.

The situation is that you lost a battle for the top spot in which you were given every opportunity to win. You accept the result of that and stay on the team and revisit your options after the season is over. Especially if your calling card has been one of being a "team-first" guy. Unless in reality you're a "team-first" as long as "me" is first kind of guy.Why is it so hard to believe that he was 100% on board while in the heat of the battle, then when you look at the situation after the decision is made, you realize there is no chance you will ever see the field? From that standpoint of the coaches, they would have to scramble to find someone. But three months is something, the week before the game isn't. In early winter, they had POB, TB, AM, AB and Vedral had either announced or was rumored to be coming. Could have signed another young guy, but it would not have been easy to lure someone with experience onto the QB roster like that, unless the person was clairvoyant.Yes, in December and January when they were getting all of the other recruits. As I said, they had to know they had a short room,
What would they have done if Gebbia had transferred after spring?
Dude, you don't announce your intention to transfer. That's basically making a threat to your coach. "Hey if you don't start me I'm quitting."The situation is that you lost a battle for the top spot in which you were given every opportunity to win. You accept the result of that and stay on the team and revisit your options after the season is over. Especially if your calling card has been one of being a "team-first" guy. There would have been no issue had Gebbia announced his intention to transfer, after looking at things post Spring Ball and realizing that wrt Martinez vs him in a Frost offense, it wasn't a question of if Amart would start, but when. But he stuck it out and competed, while probably acting as a block on other QBs coming in. Maybe someone comes in to hold the clipboard for AM, but not the run the scout team. Bagging this late in the process is the equivalent of heads I win, tails you lose.
Gebbia could have transferred earlier in the year and had the magical three years to play. A word that hasn't been used much wrt Gebbia is obligation. He chose to play the competition out to its conclusion, then left when the result wasn't to his liking. Not a team-first move.

If it was an act then maybe he should get into acting as he would have pulled off a good one on Verduzco.According to Verduzco, Gebbia told him he was all in on Saturday after he got the news. Maybe just an act?
This just seems to go round and round. Doesn’t matter what point anyone makes or tries and proves...it just spins back around the other way. Plain and simple, everyone has a view of this and there opinion and thought of what happened and so on. But the truth is, none of us truly know. Not unless your T Gebbia, Frost and his staff. Martinez won this battle and Gebbia decided to try his game elsewhere. Let’s move on and root for our team. We will add McCaffery and Smothers soon enough. We will be fine.

Is that what happened in the “Just to the south of us” thread? I was really interested in your response. I must have hit the bulls eye. This post just hit the bulls eye and, frankly, should just end all the discussion.
Probably a good possibility most of us guys overachieved on our wife!! My dad always said anyone can make excuses but it takes a hell of a man to admit he made a mistake. I've always enjoyed your posts. I don't blame gebbia for leaving just wish he would have left after the spring game but he's 19 I always rooted for him hope he succeeds in his new teamRollingLaughMaybe the only area in life I have ever overachieved. Alcohol probably clouded her judgement there.....it might have clouded mine a little last night. I think I started developing conspiracy theories in my head about Gebbia's exit. Some of this post I'd like to kind of take back. I don't think he is a bad kid. He probably perceived last weekend a little differently than the staff did. Miscommunication, I guess.
I am going to have to remember to either stay away from the keyboard when drinking or remember that alcohol was only invented to give guys like me a chance at hot chicks.

It's a good thing you apologized. Boring.....boringIf he had a contingency plan, he wasn't 100% on board.
You act like this was a sudden overreaction to blame everything on Gebbia because we don't know who else to blame. It wasn't. I've never really liked transfers or players who transfer out of Nebraska. Of course, I am a little hypocritical and love when we get good transfers coming in.Not one time did I argue that this is a team first move. I have said all along that this move was 100% about Tristan Gebbia.
You, like Oldjar and others are more pissed about the timing of the move than you are the player involved. And you are more pissed about the timing because the depth in the QB room isn't what it should or could be. But since you can't change the timing, and you don't want to question the head coach, you focus your disappointment or anger on the easiest target, and that is Gebbia. I get it. I just think the disappointment is misplaced. Gebbia isn't responsible for the depth in the QB room. Gebbia isn't responsible for the NCAA regulations that allow for him to leave now and use 2018 as his penalty year. And as I said in a different thread, if Vedral was eligible and Nebraska had signed a juco like Terry Wilson, and their were 4 QBs in the room, and Gebbia as the 2nd stringer lost the competition in the exact same manner, this doesn't get near the run as it is now.
