Frost should have been there as well as TO. They should have also reached out to the Bobfather via a ouija board.

A crisis intervention team should have been on standby outside the room to provide emotional support

TO and the Bobfather were not the HC of this team. While I am excited to see the Frost era begin AND see AM take the field, I can still say that this particular situation was handled poorly.

I dont mean to sound like a jerk with this question, but why would you think Gebbia would start a game or two with a healthy Martinez? I don't see Frost playing anyone other than Martinez as long as he stays healthy.
Our history says that the backup starts at least one game virtually every season. I can't remember a year where a backup didn't start at least one game. Running a fast tempo offense with option QB runs maybe further exposes our QB to potential injury. It will happen.

Just like the coach jerked him around by trying not to give him time to look at other schools by naming AM starter so late in the process.
Frost was very fair, IMO. He could have dragged it out for three or four games, played them both to make sure Gebbia was trapped at NU and then ultimately named Martinez the starter for conference play.

That would have been him looking out for himself and NU first. He gave TG time enough to reach the eject handle. I think if Martinez would have sucked, Frost absolutely would have named Gebbia the starter.

If Gabbia does transfer that is a bad deal. He didn't win the job so he keeps working hard in practice and showing coaches they will have a hard time keeping him from the field. On the other hand life is full of roses sometimes there are thorns and you have to get through those.

Would you just say what you wanna say and quit being a passive-aggressive housewife about it?

Who told the kid and why was it wrong to do that?

Was he lied to, or you just think that message needed to be couriered by somebody in particular?

It would have to have been tempting to name Gebbia the starter but tell them both that they both would play and the competition was ongoing for Akron. Gebbia would have been stuck here for a year.

He gone. Don’t blame him.
I do. You don't leave your team a week before the season and put the team in a bad spot. He would have had plenty of opportunities to get on the field this year and prove himself. There's no excuse for not at least sticking around this year and seeing how things go.

You absolutely do not know if he would ever sniff the field for the Huskers. Frost said they both deserved to play, didn’t say they would. He did say he prefers a single starter and give them time, long leash I believe was the phrase. I simply don’t blame the kid the least little bit.

People do it in jobs all of the time, passed over for the promotion, didn’t get the big raise, asked to do something different. Easy to say, hang in there for the team which sounds nice but he isn’t looking at one year of this, most likely three.

TM COULD get hurt first play, he has a repaired shoulder or he could go all year in close games and always be the guy. Knowing you can do more possibly somewhere else and looking at the long term, I feel for the kid and he and his family will do what’s best for him. Yes, there is a team involved but that is the way life goes.

Unless they have a returning starting QB, most schools do not name a starter until the beginning of game week. Alabama still hasn't. LSU, Clemson, FSU, and Florida just announced today. USC did yesterday.

Gebbia wasn't owed anything, other than the chance to compete for the starting QB job. He could have transferred after the Spring Game when Martinez looked better. Or right after Riley was fired and we brought in a coach with a completely different system. He gambled on being able to earn the starting position here and he didn't. He has to live with the consequences of his decision.

One can never be sure with the sensibilities of young boys. Best to handle these decisions with a delicate touch so as not to offend.

Sorry to be so vague before, but I was hoping that the whole situation could be salvaged and that Frost might be able to pull a Frank S and Eric C scenario out and keep Gebbia around.

It ain't happening. To pull the vail back on what I said, Verduzco did tell Gebbia RIGHT before the depth chart came out. Frost did not.

Here we see the downside of naming the younger player the starter. But Frost was true to his approach.

I'm fine with Bunch being the backup. I thought he looked very good in the spring game.

I too thought he played well. Well, he's our back-up now.

You know why Bama has not announced, right? Smart move by Uncle Nick

Matt Masker, true freshman walk-on who is a passing QB and probably a better fit for a Mike Riley offense.

Huskers.com bio: Matt Masker helped Kearney Catholic High School to three Class C-1 playoff appearances, including semifinal berths in 2014 and 2016. A two-time all-state selection, Masker made the Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska second team as a senior. In his career, Masker threw for more than 7,000 yards with a 63.4 percent completion rate and 86 touchdowns. As a senior, Masker threw for 2,506 yards and 25 touchdowns, while rushing for 341 yards and six scores. As a junior in 2016, he compiled 2,717 passing yards and 36 touchdowns. In 2015, Masker threw for 1,724 yards and 24 touchdowns. Following his prep career, Masker represented the South Squad in the 2018 Nebraska Shrine Bowl.

Why would Gebbia quit sooner if he thought he could be the starter here? If Frost had announced Martinez as the starter 3 weeks ago, Gebbia probably would have left then. Now all of a sudden that would different and would be okay compared to now?

My thought is to cut him a break. He was focused for two years, lived in the film room, worked his butt off, then didn't get the brass ring. It has to be terribly disappointing and something a guy may need to take a little time to regroup, talk to his parents, look at some options, and spin down. Lots of us call in sick when we have a bad hang nail. I can't fault him for missing one day if he comes back and I don't think the team will either.

Maybe if he shows up halfway through practice tomorrow the team will do a slow clap.

I think he already withdrew from the school.

This is how people slowly start to separate with 4-star players. It's like a girlfriend, but she's a dude, with a good arm and the ability to read defenses.

They tell themselves that "he'll get a bunch of playing time. I'll still get to see him every game." ("I'll still get to see her all the time. She just lives a few miles away.").

"Ya know, he's really going to be a strong leader as a backup." ("Ya know, she is still going to call me and help me make important decisions.")

"Oh he'll never leave. He was born to be a Nebraska Cornhusker." ("She's never going to be completely out of my life. She was born to be an important part of my life.")

"What, he's leaving for opportunities elsewhere??!!" ("I'm completely F**ked! Back to Extra Large pizza and breadsticks for one on Saturday nights.").

Last coach I remember having different starters was Pelini. Solich obviously didn't have different starters and I'm not sure TO ever had a different starter since 1994.

Not sure how far back in history we're going, but I don't think that matters because all that matters is Frost's history and I don't believe he had different starters at UCF.

Oh Gawd, that the HC didn't personally tell every player who isn't presently starting.....why, that's handled like sh*t!

Handled like s#&@ is probably the wrong phrase to use....handled poorly is probably more along the lines of what I should have said. A hotly contested qb battle that is pretty much the ONLY thing everyone was talking about....I just think the HC should personally be there to break the news. You can disagree with me on that.....and that's fine. I think we still have two potentially great QBs here if Frost would have told him.

Oh well, though. Doesn't matter now. I am glad that in a few days we will be talking about a game more than a depth chart. GBR.

I think they are talking about injury, not performance.

However, Frost did turn to Milton in 2016 when the other QBs weren't effective. Although one did miss some time due to injury.

There seems to be a lot of butt hurt for a guy that is too skinny, wasn't recruited for this offense, and can't run.
There were a lot of us on the TG train as the starter, at least out of the gate to begin the season. I bought the hype of the kid being a gamer, a film room junky, etc. The kid is gonna do what he perceives to be the best for him, but there is truth to the grass being greener and all. He was one play away from starting in Lincoln this fall. Not a lot of QBs get that chance at a P5 program. And there are no guarantees in him starting at wherever he lands. Does he bag it there too?
Pretty sure TG saw that if he couldn't best AMart now, it was probably never going to happen. And unless he transfers to a JUCO, a lower BCS or a P5 with a ****** QB room, there is an even money chance he doesn't start right away.

I guess I don't get why it has to be a Juco, lower BCS or a team with a ****** QB room. If he lost a close race with a guy that was tailor made to run this offense, why couldn't he go somewhere like say Oklahoma St or Ole Miss or Florida or Tennessee and compete for and win the job?
