I'm not sure Riley has lost the majority of the fan base. He's lost a certain percentage of rabid radio callers and internet posters but I don't think he ever really had them. The people I talk to on a daily basis are pretty patient with him other than the ones who were in your face Pelini supporters and there aren't that many of them anymore. MOST people are just letting the season play our and are comfortable with the administration in place making the decision.
Im confident that Moos will make a good decision. But as far as the fans go how can anyone who has watched this team get consistently pushed around by nearly every opponent still be on board with MR? I think hes a great guy. But as a coach hes average at best. His teams are soft and spend to much time thinking. They have no killer instinct. And I dont believe for one second that MR demands excellence. Meyer looked like he wanted to kill someone after an OSU false start. Because he demands excellence. So does Saban and there are others. Im not saying fire MR today. But this thing is over and thats before what will likely be 4 more losses. 3 if were lucky. Bottom line a new coach is a gamble. The current coach is a disaster.

The reality is that Riley may not be walking the green mile yet, but it seems clear that he's been moved to that cell block. If somehow the program ends up above par in the W/L column and the decision is to retain (which, btw is the fair decision), we probably replay this drama.
You said it. We will replay this drama if he is retained.

UF fired him because the team stinks...if he was 8-0 right now...they are not firing him about some death threat BS and lord knows he would have been getting them from fans of other teams.

Duhhhhhhh if they are 8-0 he wouldn't be making up rumors of death threats........They are firing him to save themselves a **** ton of money. He gave them a reason and they took it.

You've been pissed ever since Riley was hired. You can scream and holler all you want and it won't change anything. We've got good people making this decision with the full support of the regents, football alums, former head coach/AD, etc. Just relax. I feel very good having a former college O lineman in the driver's seat. He knows what's up.

Since when do we have expectations on a message board not to discuss anything that isn't within our control?

I'm not sure who you talk to on a daily basis but my business puts me in contact with a little of common fans. It was always a 50-50 at best of people who believed in Mike Riley. Many of them said they would take a wait and see. That was prior to this year. From the ones we see it is clearly a majority that have said they have seen enough. Everyone says he is a nice guy and mean him no bad feelings. They just don't believe he should be here any longer.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. But the end of the tunnel isn't this year. It's next year. Does it make a difference that Pelini left a two-year hole in the Oline scholarship distribution? Literally a two year hole where we had something like 1 or 2 productive scholarships total. Beginning last year, we had 4 scholarship players on the OL that were either a Junior or a Senior - Whitaker, The Rock, Hannon, Knevel. Two never saw the field. One just was overtaken by a true frosh that Riley recruited. Whitaker had trouble getting on and staying on the field. That is a HOLE in the two deep.

Pelini signed an OK class in 2014 - Gates/Farmer/Foster. These guys should be producing better than what we're getting from them. In Riley's first class in 2015 (sort of, he held it together after Pelini was fired) he brought in Barnett, Decker and Gaylord. After that point, he has brought in 4 in each of the last two classes. So he has 11 of the 16 scholarship olinemen in the three youngest classes. We are getting ZERO help from our senior class.

To me, this is the reason we have been operating mash units on our OL the last two years - we don't have a healthy scholarship distribution to even be able to judge Riley on. He's building it, but it takes time. And it's going to continue to take time. Next year is the year we need to see solid results and will have the depth to absorb injuries.

I guess the reason I want to be more patient about this is because I think Riley would make a change at OL coach. He has to based solely on what we are getting from Farmer, Gates, and Foster. Those three should still be able to perform (although having Cole Conrad in there calling protections is absolutely KILLING US, and Lee). I would like to see Cav replaced. Next year, with a solid core of OL, we should be able to protect Lee enough to see what Riley and co have put together. This year, it's pretty tough to even judge the offense because the OL is once again not very good. In my opinion, this isn't Riley's fault (yet). Next year, with a bad OL, the results are all his to own. But I'm not willing to flush this staff and the recruiting class they've been able to assemble this year.

So after 3 years of working under Cav we are still blaming Bo for the productivity of the line. Gotcha.

First of all it hasn't been a full 3 years of working under Cav. Secondly, where's the upperclassmen in the 2 deep we've always leaned on? I agree that I would like to see more progress there, but don't kid yourself, Bo's staff is at least partly responsible for our deficiency of upperclassmen contributors.

If you listen to today’s interview with Moos on 93.7 you may change your tune. He all but said the fan base has moved on from Riley. MR is a dead man walking.

His "NU isn't use to getting blown out like Ohio State did" caught my attention.

Moos may want to familiarize himself before stating stuff like that. We've been getting our asses kicked twice a year dating back to 2002, sans a season or two.

That's your perception.

Did you listen to it? Moos didn’t pull any punches on what the majority of fans are saying about Riley. Sipple even worded the question so he had an “out” if he didn’t want to go into the negativity. Bill Moos “perception” was pretty clear.

I've listened to Moos multiple times and he doesn't say anything that callers don't already say on Sports Nightly. He's aware of what some are saying. The issue is painting the entire fan base with that brush.

Moos is the one doing the painting and based on his interview today he’s hearing nothing good from fans. He was very difinitive, which surprised me given I thought he’d be more measured.

Most fans will never be used to that. It’s a good thing.

That isn't how he stated it though, it's as if Nebraska football hasn't been thumped like that before. And he's wrong, it's happened multiple times under the last 4 coaches (Frank, Bill, Bo and Mike).

Good overall interview though from the little I listened.

That’s a new definition. It sounds like you have not listened to the interview - he made some very specific statements about how fans generally felt. I was surprised how negative he went saying those.

I think the most interesting thing he said was that he would recommend staff changes if he thought it was necessary because ultimately he is their boss as well. In the past it seems most ADs have tried to stay out of a coach's particular staff publically and let them sink or float on their own...

Bill Moos, Ronnie Green and Hank Bounds have control over the decision, not HOL message board posters. Drop the 3 decision makers an email or call, I'm sure they GAF what you have to say.

OP is pissed the Riley led Huskers won Saturday night.

Actually, I think they probably do GAF what our paying customers have to say, you know since we...uh...help pay for the program and all. And since we are 4-4 in Riley's 3rd season, with a loss to Northern Illinois, the aforementioned 3 probably feel the exact same way the OP does.

There's less than 20 people's opinions they GAF about and not one of them are posting on the Husker Online message board.

And especially not you, not the OP, not me, not a single damn person on here.

But go ahead and pretend your opinion matters.

He openly repeats what he hears on the call in shows. Why is that surprising. He isn't an idiot. He's showing that he knows the tenor of the conversation which is largely negative. That factors in to his decision and some may be correct that the decision has already been made. We'll find out in a few weeks for sure.

Even Tom recommended staff changes to Bo. That after he had put things in Bo's contract to discourage any control by an AD.

Wrong. They most certainly do care about what the masses say. Especially when they are paying top dollar for seats, and top dollar for the Champions Club. Sure, we don't have the pull of the big donors, but they still listen to the masses. We still represent millions of dollars of donations.

They care if the stadium is empty for a second half or if fans are tuning out. Of course the individual fan has very little impact on decisions but overall the fan collective controls everything. To think that the fan base is still supporting Riley is delusional, the fans want a change

Right. I edited my post to say publically. Obviously I think those kind of things happen in every athletic department, but it just doesn't sound like those things are ever really publicized because it can come off as the AD micromanaging the department.

Two different things. Of course they'll listen to the masses, or everyone for this matter, that's natural as part of the job. However, the masses have zero pull on decisions. It's less than 20 people that make the decision and that's not gonna change anytime soon.

Think what you want, even though it's wrong.

"Nebraska earned the bulk of its money, about $40.7 million, from rights and licensing deals. NU also hauled in about $36.6 million from ticket sales and saw $19.6 million come in from contributions."

LOL, I would say we have 'just a bit' of pull when we represent over a third of the athletic department budget, and nearly twice that of big donors. Try again..

I think MR will be gone no matter what. My question is what exactly has Frost done to prove he can coach with big boys? The AAC is way different than the BIG10. I think peoples love with Frost at this point is an emotional one vs a talent.
Yes UCF was 0-12 2 year s ago, but weren't they also in the Fiesta bowl a year before that? So this teams hasn't been a bottom dweller for 50 year, Frost comes in and goes undefeated year 2.
If Frost can come in, and restore the order, FANTASTIC. I would love it if he could. I just don't want everyone to jump the gun and hire the wrong guy AGAIN based on emotion. Neb is at another cross roads. I don't see us surviving another wrong coaching hire. Just need to make sure Frost is the guy before pulling the trigger.
OK, at the risk of extreme criticism, I'll add my 2 cents worth. Nebraska must get back to physical football. The next coach must be like Broehm of Purdue and demand that we become the more physical team on the field every game. We literally got beat up Sat. by a team way less athletic, and that has been happening far too often with Iowa, Wisc, NW, even Minny during Jerry Kill's coaching. We don't need the dainty little WR's from Cally as much as we need the Bulldozer 2 star linemen from the Midwest, and a few big strong RB's. Only a blindman could miss the glaring deficiencies of our OL. (Personally, I think we should offer a few more instate linemen, unless there are no choices). Something is wrong with strength & conditioning. We seem to have more injuries than 3 teams, and the OL do not look like they are excelling in the weight room (see Gates who has regressed since he has been here). I would hope the new coach would consider keeping JP, and the Williams boys for recruiting purposes, but a good coach will have/know of good assistants. Even a coach like Navy's (don't ask me to spell his name) - has built a tough culture like we need here, but it doesn't have to be him of course. Love to see us go back to Husker tough.

I think most of the $19.6 million is coming from the 20 people he is talking about.

Of course those 20 people are either custodians of the program or rich superfans of it. And a thought just popped into my head. Not to re-litigate Frank, but did Stevie P go off road on his firinig, or were the "20 people" down with the idea of canning a 9 win coach the day after a victory over a key rival. That event is key in the fracturing of the fansbase.

The "20 people" are not always, really never, on the same page. So yes, a group of the "20 people" were very much behind the canning of a 9 win coach

The two statements seem incongruent. Unless of course, the 20 people are the ones on the call in shows setting the negative tenor of the conversation.

I haven't lived in NE for nearly 30 years and wasn't paying particular close attention to the events of the program in late 2003. I remember being a bit surprised that Frank got canned. I thought the CU win had put any HC change to bed, at least for the season. Obviously people weren't happy with some things at the time. The fact that the team couldn't get any traction in the games against TX and KSU was disappointing. But that disappointment looks quaint and perhaps even a bit precious at the present time.
