UF fired him because the team stinks...if he was 8-0 right now...they are not firing him about some death threat BS and lord knows he would have been getting them from fans of other teams.

I agree that UF stinks like you said, but if Jim would have kept his mouth shut about receiving death threats he most likely would have been fired at the end of the season instead of right now. UF just saved around $12 million to fire him right now because of that fact. And if he was 8-0 right now, he wouldn't have said anything and would still have his job.

Riley has lost the fan base and Moos may feel it is just time to give the program an adrenaline boost by bringing in new blood
I'm not sure Riley has lost the majority of the fan base. He's lost a certain percentage of rabid radio callers and internet posters but I don't think he ever really had them. The people I talk to on a daily basis are pretty patient with him other than the ones who were in your face Pelini supporters and there aren't that many of them anymore. MOST people are just letting the season play our and are comfortable with the administration in place making the decision.

I don't get the view by some in this thread that it is stupid to voice an opinion about our coaching situation because that decision is not ours to make.
Duh. Of course it isn't. Who on here said it was? Certainly not the OP.
It's a freaking football chat board for crying out loud. It exists so Husker fans can connect and exchange views. And if one of those views is that Riley should be fired and replaced with Frost I don't see how expressing that (a popular view by the way probably shared by most Husker fans), implies that the poster is trying to usurp some admin's job. They are just expressing an opinion.

Interesting point. Do you know of any recent polls that have been taken? I would really be curious about that. And what do the big boosters think? My friends and family trend anti Riley. So maybe I am illegitimately extrapolating from that small sample

I believe Florida fired their coach to get a jump on other programs - They knew he would not last the season and saw benefit in having the opening now rather than later - maybe we should be paying attention

We gain clarity

I cannot imagine that communications have not been made with potential coaches that Moos considers options. You don't have to fire the coach in the middle of the season to test the interest out there and make it abundantly clear the job will be available. If this is not being done then there are more issues than just the football staff.

I think Riley has lost the majority of the fan base. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this team is a mess. I was a big supporter but finally came to the conclusion he just isn't a good fit here. When your offensive line is a complete disaster in year 3 at Nebraska you're probably in trouble! I just don't see any light at the end of that tunnel.

Multiple threads on page one, about the same thing. Merge em, condense em, I'm all for multiple threads, about multiple topics.

As for the rest of your post, I'm guessing you forgot all the complaints in 2013 and 2014 about the "fire Pelini" threads.

Fine. Take it up with the mods then. Don't belittle a poster for expressing a view. It is what we do here.
And I don't see the relevance of the fact that there were similar posts 4 years ago. Of course there are. Similar situation: unpopular coach with many fans

We have Scott's personal phone number. He has a hotline to the AD's office. Scott has multiple close friends in Lincoln. It isn't complicated. I would call it a fraternity but it's closer to a group of buddies who stay in touch. Maybe it's through an agent but more likely it's just hey Scott you know what the deal is. Let's stay in touch. Things will get more serious if the situation clarifies itself these last couple of weeks.

How many of you know what NU's record over the 20 years before Devaney was? In first 40 years of the 20th century, through the last year of Biff Jones, we won 75% of our games. In the next 2 decades, ending with Bill Jennings last year, we won 36%. After that, in the 36 years of two HOF coaches, we won 84% of our games. Since 1997, we have won 67% of our games through last Saturday.
In each successive decade, college football has gotten more competitive. After a long period of dominance before WWII, we were truly woeful. We were then truly dominant and lucky to get two "once in a lifetime" coaches in a row who enjoyed long tenures with long serving staffs. Success has been harder to come by since then.
Taking a long view is probably seen as stupid, but the fact of the matter is that we are in a period of B seasons with few C seasons thrown in the mix. And that feels disappointing to the fans that saw the A work and perfect papers. The team needs better talent and probably better coaching. I think we can now say the Oline position coaching is mediocre. Some of the fanbase has concluded that they've seen enough of Riley's work and want him to see his way out of the stadium complex. And I would say that regardless of the merits of the case against him, the well is poisoned wrt Riley. If he isn't terminated this year, it is clear that his time is short. And that kills recruiting as long as he's here.
Scott Frost looks like a promising young coach. But if he were to end up in NE this winter, he will be confronted with the same roster issues, the challenges of transitioning the players to his systems/terminology, and most likely a handful of recruits left in a small class. How long before the heat is on the Frost?

Tuco is a better resource than me on the topic but I've had a couple of friends who are or were college coaches or ADs and it's interesting when things are shaking out. One D-1 head football coach and I were visiting at our kids' hockey game when he got a call on his cell phone from a coaching buddy in the SE US. They just visited for about 10 minutes about what jobs were opening up and who was being contacted. Davison and Frost talk quite a bit I think. There's a network and he'll probably be the first to know if we are going to have an opening.

Interesting stuff about coaches being in contact with each other. Makes sense.
And I did not know about Frost and Davison. That is very interesting. I listen to the games on radio and man oh man you can just tell how pissed Davison is about the state of the program. During the OSU broadcast I thought he came very close to saying Riley should be let go. He was thoroughly disgusted

Wait, we're not allowed to express opinions on here like "taking it up with the AD, Chancellor or President" but we can when someone wants someone fired. Oh, it's okay to belittle players, coaches and anyone in between but gosh damn it, don't belittle someone posting on an anonymous message board.

Davison was Frost's guest at an Oregon game or two. He talked about that openly when Frost was still at Oregon.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. But the end of the tunnel isn't this year. It's next year. Does it make a difference that Pelini left a two-year hole in the Oline scholarship distribution? Literally a two year hole where we had something like 1 or 2 productive scholarships total. Beginning last year, we had 4 scholarship players on the OL that were either a Junior or a Senior - Whitaker, The Rock, Hannon, Knevel. Two never saw the field. One just was overtaken by a true frosh that Riley recruited. Whitaker had trouble getting on and staying on the field. That is a HOLE in the two deep.

Pelini signed an OK class in 2014 - Gates/Farmer/Foster. These guys should be producing better than what we're getting from them. In Riley's first class in 2015 (sort of, he held it together after Pelini was fired) he brought in Barnett, Decker and Gaylord. After that point, he has brought in 4 in each of the last two classes. So he has 11 of the 16 scholarship olinemen in the three youngest classes. We are getting ZERO help from our senior class.

To me, this is the reason we have been operating mash units on our OL the last two years - we don't have a healthy scholarship distribution to even be able to judge Riley on. He's building it, but it takes time. And it's going to continue to take time. Next year is the year we need to see solid results and will have the depth to absorb injuries.

I guess the reason I want to be more patient about this is because I think Riley would make a change at OL coach. He has to based solely on what we are getting from Farmer, Gates, and Foster. Those three should still be able to perform (although having Cole Conrad in there calling protections is absolutely KILLING US, and Lee). I would like to see Cav replaced. Next year, with a solid core of OL, we should be able to protect Lee enough to see what Riley and co have put together. This year, it's pretty tough to even judge the offense because the OL is once again not very good. In my opinion, this isn't Riley's fault (yet). Next year, with a bad OL, the results are all his to own. But I'm not willing to flush this staff and the recruiting class they've been able to assemble this year.

You are deflecting. You did not belittle the OP for belittling the coaches. That is Truehuskerfans job and I respect his view. You belittled the OP by implying that by merely stating his views on the coaching situation that he was trying to usurp some admin's job. That is just a ridiculous point and would imply that any conversations on here that tend toward commentary on how the program should proceed are also illegitimate and for the same reasons.
But I am done with this now. I normally love your posts. I just sharply disagree with this one. I don't want to get into a pissing contest over something so trivial. We have both had our say.

Given the uncertainty re Riley, a chunk of the assembled class are kicking the tires of other programs. Regardless of the merits on Riley, that is happening. The NU honchos and assorted money bags put these events in motion when the decision to fire SE was made.

That is true but they almost had to can SE when they did. It was pretty clear that SE wasn't going to survive once HP retired.....unless MR had won big this year. Even then I don't know.

The reality is that Riley may not be walking the green mile yet, but it seems clear that he's been moved to that cell block. If somehow the program ends up above par in the W/L column and the decision is to retain (which, btw is the fair decision), we probably replay this drama.

They didn't have to can Eichorst after one of the most humiliating losses in the last 50 years. If the firing was not relevant to Riley's status, it sure as hell was interpreted that way.

I believe they did it to save about 30+ Million on mac's buyout... with cause from the whole death threat debacle....

I honestly think Frost is the kind of guy who might be turned off a little to be sought after, mid season...lack of class and character... what can we possibly gain by firing mike riley now that we couldnt gain by waiting til the season is over???

Optics and timing are very important, .

Sure it was. I wasn't arguing that it wasn't. There were some that wanted SE gone and that first half of the Oregon game the wheels started spinning. Some of those same people want Riley gone. That's why I said it was almost inevitable that SE was going to get canned once his protector retired. He was an outsider with nobody willing to carry his water anymore so when the going got tough and the phones started ringing they pulled the plug. My point on the timing was that they needed to have a new AD in place by now if they wanted to make a deliberate decision on Riley's future. The wheels are turning now just like they did long before BC lost to USC that last year.

What does anyone think they will see the rest of the season that we have not already seen?

We beat Purdue whoop de do! Even the way we won a game is horrible - 50 pass attempts 40- yards rushing and gave up 199 yards on the ground. The most telling part of this whole game was the way Purdue pushed us around the whole game - Let me state that again "Purdue" physically beat up the Nebraska Cornhuskers

And still some on this board are saying - If he goes 7-5 he earns another year - Riley has earned nothing from this University or fan base ,think we were a laughing stock before now we are just pitiful.

Get rid of him and call Frost and beg/pay him whatever it takes to come

I thought that's why THEY play the game. By your reasoning, let's call it a season. No bowl game. No recruits. Let's call it a day.

This team still has a chance to beat 3-4 teams on their schedule, and play a top ten team in PSU.

If anything, it builds towards the future, what ever that may be.

I get what you're saying but the guys we have up front right now are not realizing their full potential. We need a top notch OL coach who can motivate and instruct these kids not only during the season but starting with off season conditioning. Maybe someone who will actually get in there and train with the guys. Someone who can relate to the kids and recruit and teach them at a high level. Cav ain't getting it done. Having said that the culture trickles down from the head coach so I doubt we'll ever return to being a physically dominant team under Riley.

What advantage in their coaching search did UF gain by firing McElwain so soon? No other coach is going to leave their current team mid-season. Marketable Coaches that are looking to move up are going to wait to see the job inventory before making a move.

It’s about working with agents, scoping asst coach pools, the new December signing day. Waiting to make a move may have been ok in the old February signing day world, but it isn’t anymore. Not sure why this is difficult to comprehend.

Exactly. It's not that complex.
By making the opening is official, it removes any uncertainty about whether or not the opening will be there, and allows the replacement process to be more open (at least on one side of the equation).
