Then we can have one less thing to fuss about.

And changing the flag will improve the illiteracy, obesity, and poverty in the state. I’m sure all those business conventions and NCAA tournaments will be lining up to come to Jackson. The only reason they haven’t been here before is the flag.**

ETA: I’m with you on not glorifying the confederate states, I just think blaming the flag for problems in the state is complete nonsense and changing the flag will do nothing to improve any of those problems. But if you want to put a new poncho on a fat chick so she’ll look better, go ahead. I don’t think people that make fun of Mississippi and those that live there will change their opinions at all based on whatever is on the flag. That’s not why they’re laughing or avoiding doing business in Mississippi. If they wanted to do business here, they would. See the auto industry.

I don't believe that anyone has suggested that it would be anything other than righting a wrong. I'm suggesting that is a good enough reason to do it. However, if you have a flag design that will solve all of Mississippi's problems you should submit it for consideration quickly and patent the process! I know of at least 49 other states that would like a simple piece of cloth to solve theirs, not to mention how many nation-states.

November is the perfect time to put it on the ballot for vote. It’s time to stop using 2001 as a reason to no longer discuss this. The world is a different place since 2001.

You can say that again. The world is a much different place since 2019

Of the choices, I like the magnolia flag the best. The magnolia itself needs work. Doesn’t even look like a magnolia. Maybe just use a magnolia bloom? The rest of the flag is good.
I like this one because it represents symbols associated with Mississippi, not just generic stars.

Second choice would be stennis or Bonnie blue.

We need something uniquely ours.

Flags that are unique that I like:
Alabama
California (what animal would we use?)
Tennessee
Texas
South Carolina (palmetto symbol)

Obviously the Louisiana Black Bear, just like the Flagship.**

I do not care at all what other people think. I want to change the flag because it's the right thing to do for all MISSISSIPPI'S citizens (not other state's citizens).

Maybe you should ask yourself why you soooooo desire the approval of others.

Unless you think Mississippi can build a more robust economy from within, you damn sure better care what other people think.

Y'all are nuts. That list doesn't even include the segregationists or all the native-american names that are appropriated. Might as well change the name of the state, the river, all of it. Doesn't matter that none of that stuff from the past exists anymore.

Good catch Bruce - let's also stop honoring segregationists!

What do think about my choice? I was for changing it in 2001. I argued with everyone I knew that it was time to remove it to move our state forward and for the feelings of our black brothers and sisters.
I was warned that the opposition would not stop there and keep pushing for our statues, town names, Schools, ect. I was also for Gay marriage. Once again, I was warned about 'give them an inch they will take a mile.' You can see how that turned out. Within years we had trans-gendered dudes trying to get up in the bathrooms with our daughters. Also now, if you don't worship the homosexual agenda you are said to HATE them. It won't stop. I know the flag will be changed and that will only be the beginning.

It puts the national eye on MS and a **** ton of pressure on all its citizens. Theres a pretty good chance it gets voted down if left up to the people. Talk about embarrassing to this state. That would do us under. No way Tater needs to leave it up to a vote.

Change it now and the national media will give us grace. Maybe even allow us to gain some momentum that leads to some positive recognition.

Leave it up to a vote and we're ******. Change it now and people might start taking this state seriously.

I am all for legally changing that stupid flag. But if the Legislature just decides to do it outside of the will of the people, so be it. But I will also be for the Legislature censoring your free speech, and anyone else on here that thinks the legislature should go around the people. I have some great flag ideas that exclude anything relative to the stupid confederate flag. But we need to vote. If you can get away with voting multiple times to make sure it is removed, I don’t care. But I trust the people who supported that thing in 2001 have mostly passed away or at least are too senile to even vote this time. But give the people of this State some viable options to replace that horrid thing by letting them vote.

The Legislator created the state flag in 1894 without a vote, changed the state seal in 2014 without a vote, and now they actually need to change this trash without a vote.

Before we move forward, we do need to make sure you are aware we elect a Legislature, who's job it is to promulgate laws and regulations?

The magnolia flag is ugly AND it was a Mississippi flag in the confederacy.

NO to any flags with actual use during or around the confederacy. WTH? Why would we do that? Like others have said, of course the Germans don't use flags with a swastika, but they also aren't going to use a flag with ties to Hitler other than a swastika.

Prop B is weird too.

I think I like the Stennis flag.

For all the downvotes that I got from my post a couple of spots up. It wasn't 30 minutes and this new article pops up. Get ready to rename everything in Southern History. https://www.nola.com/news/article_02e2c3c0-aa96-11ea-9c26-930417d9d67a.html
Good, glad they’re removing the name of notable treasonous and slave holding ******* that wanted to leave the US known as Jefferson Davis. That street runs right next to HBCU Xavier, whose students should not have to drive on a road named after a guy that wanted to continue owning their ancestors as property.

I don’t care one bit about the MS flag. Change it, don’t change it, whatever. Just don’t expect changing the flag to change a thing.

Flags are symbols that should unite people not divide them. Right now it does not unite our state. It alienates and shames a lot of people in this state.

I have always been jealous of my friends in Tennessee who display their state flag literally everywhere. It is something you can take great pride in if you are connected to that state. I can’t wait for the day to do the same with the Mississippi flag. The sooner it is changed the better.

Funny you use this specific language 'give them an inch they will take a mile'. This is the exact same thing my racist-*** ancestors said about extending the right to vote to black Mississippians, and then again when Mississippi finally got around to allowing black children to attend the same schools as white children.

Just, an interesting choice...

Which alternative to do you guys like? Images at bottom of this article

I like the Stennis version.

I can't look at the Magnolia and not thing I'm looking at a 2nd grade powerpoint template with a tree in the middle for some reason

Stennis flag is really cool. First time I’ve seen any options, but that one is by far the best. I would buy it right now and fly it in front of my house.

I agree with your point that changing the state flag won't solve all of Mississippi's problems.

However, changing the flag is a definite step in the right direction. It removes a hurdle that is in Mississippi's way.

After the flag is changed, nobody will be able to look down on Mississippi because of the confederate symbol in the state flag.

I've lived in the Washington DC area since 1998, so I was here when Mississippi's voters elected to keep the flag in 2001. Boy . . . that sucked. Everyone asked me about it, and I didn't know what to tell them.

Mississippi has a great chance to play this right and get some good PR for the state. The leaders of Mississippi need to hire a great PR firm for messaging and get the legislature's ducks in a row.

People across the US will definitely hear about this when it happens, and their opinions of Mississippi will turn more positive as a result.

The change needs to happen, but why the 17 does every state need a flag anyway? It’s the dumbest **** to begin with. Fly the US flag and be done with it. State flags don’t mean ****.

We could use a bulldog body with a land shark head and eagles wings. To be equal opportunity, we could add a Tiger Tale, a Devils Pitchfork and Brave with war paint so that when it waves in the wind, it changes from one to the other.

I'm not 100% sure of all the laws, etc. around who can and cannot decide to change the flag, but I wish the legislature would vote on changing it (that way the people we elect have to defend their vote and angry people can take it out on the rep at the polls) and then the people can vote which new flag they want, but simply don't give them to choice to change it or not.

Let's make our supposed leaders defend their stance in the open.

The problem with the 2001 flag proposal, was that new flag looked like ****

It looked exactly like what you'd expect from a committee

I would go with something closer to our heritage, with a magnolia tree, similar to the flag the current flag replaced.

However, it was created in 1861 when Mississippi seceded from the Union.

From what I hear, the Stennis flag is the one that will replace the old one.

Looks better.

Top tier state flags:
Alaska
New Mexico
Arizona
Tennessee
Maryland

Also good:
Texas
South Carolina
Colorado
Alabama
Ohio

Most of the rest are garbage. If you put your state seal or write the name of your state on the flag, you need to redesign.

Anything that shows off the best of what our state has done, and has to offer, let's build statues and put it on flags.

Anything that could reasonably be viewed as a hate symbol, let's tuck that away into a museum to preserve the history and culture.
Statues of catfish, Elvis, and Jimmy Buffet

What would be great and simple is the Bonnie Blue. An update would be a combo of it with the Stennis where the Bonnie is bordered on the left and right with the red bars. Simple, unique, and historic.
Like others, I long for the day when I can wear my homestate’s flag with pride.

Hopefully so. When I was younger I didn't understand it in 2001 but college education from two different schools and nationwide and worldwide experiences after made me understand why it needs to go and should have a long time ago.
