Still a big uphill battle, but it's definitely gaining momentum.

November is the perfect time to put it on the ballot for vote. It’s time to stop using 2001 as a reason to no longer discuss this. The world is a different place since 2001.

I don’t care one bit about the MS flag. Change it, don’t change it, whatever. Just don’t expect changing the flag to change a thing.

It’ll make us look less like a bunch of backwoods inbred hicks instantly because we got rid of the confederate flag, but go off king.

There is no reason to wait for November. The legislature should do their jobs, do what's right, and fix it now.

Which problems within the state of Mississippi will it solve? Do you really think this will make people from the north east and west coast view people from MS as anything other than backwoods rednecks?

Yep and Tate should be leading the charge. This is an opportune moment for him to move himself forward in the public arena, solidify his legacy as governor and most importantly, do the right thing.

I'm not really sure you understand how the rest of the world views our flag.

But you can bet your sweet *** it's different than how our grandaddies told us we should feel about it.

It will solve the problem of supporting Confederate era racist emblems on our flag and that's enough.

On the bright side, your SCV chapter will have a new reason to gripe.

Shame

It is a shame that the flag has such a negative connotation. Take all meaning aside, it is a cool looking flag that is unique. Symbols change meanings all the time throughout history. Too bad it was hijacked by hate groups (KKK/neo nazi’s/etc).

I am squarely on the fence with this issue. I understand both sides of the argument. One side argues that it is part of our history and culture. The other side sees it as a hate symbol. While not as extreme as a swastika (national flag of fascists that millions died through genocide under, ultimately WWII and 52 million dead), I’ve seen comparisons being made to that. Would we want a swastika on our flag? The other side would counter that it is not intended to be a hate symbol.

Like others have mentioned. I don’t think it’s going to make much difference either way.

Too soon. Having a vote now is risky. Very good chance it doesn't pass now. That would look even worse. Better not have the vote if you don't know for sure it will pass.

I've been living out of state for the last 3 years, and I can tell you that I've never once heard anything positive about the flag. Many times I've been around someone when they learned that has the Confederate flag in it, so it's not a universally known thing, but from my experience, it's universally been viewed negatively or as confirming stereotypes.

A few comments:

The current flag is ugly as ****, no matter what the symbols mean. The Stennis flag is 1000% better looking.

Both sides are correct. It is a part of our history. The absolute worst and most shameful part of our history. And it is absolutely a hate symbol. It belongs in a museum, not on the state flag.

The legislature should have done their job the first time rather than wasting money on a vote. Now that they let the people vote and we are within 5 months of November, they should probably just let us vote in November.

Here's how to handle that

One side argues that it is part of our history and culture. The other side sees it as a hate symbol.

Anything that shows off the best of what our state has done, and has to offer, let's build statues and put it on flags.

Anything that could reasonably be viewed as a hate symbol, let's tuck that away into a museum to preserve the history and culture.

Not really. Everybody likes to have somebody to look down on, and they're not going to change their opinion because of the flag. They will just move on to monuments, street names, school names, etc, and if we were to get rid of all that, they'd just keep their opinion b/c they will still have the past to point to.

Not saying we shouldn't do it; I think we should. People just shouldn't be disappointed when it doesn't change much. I do think fewer businesses will try to virtue signal related to street and school names, and probably monuments also, so that will be good.

It represents our state's attempt to preserve a system of owning people like chattel. Why that should be revered and celebrated in a state flag, I'll never understand.

Unfortunately I agree. If we really want it to change - better not leave it up to a vote. We'll have people coming out to vote that haven't voted since 2001. The lawmakers need to man up and take care of this themselves.

I don't see either happening anytime soon.

From a business standpoint, yes it will. I work in a business community wherein, most of my counterparts will not travel to Mississippi if we host an industry event and the only reason, is the flag. So like or not, yes it does change the way some think of us.

I voted to change it 2001. I'll vote to change it this time, assuming the legislature gives us a chance.

I do not care at all what other people think. I want to change the flag because it's the right thing to do for all MISSISSIPPI'S citizens (not other state's citizens).

Maybe you should ask yourself why you soooooo desire the approval of others.

Our state flag contains a battle flag from a war against the United States of America. Why would a bunch of people that have problems with football players kneeling during the anthem not think it’s disrespectful to glorify a flag that fought against the very country’s flag you’re worried about being disrespected?

The referendum is the dumbest way possible to handle this. Will there be a referendum to handle marijuana legalization in MS too? The current flag is something that hurts the state badly on multiple fronts...economic, social, public relations, etc., and provides no tangible benefit whatsoever to offset those factors. Politicians should exercise some basic common sense and do what they can to remove it. If they can’t execute a simple common sense decision for the benefit of the state as a whole, there is no reason to expect them to be able to tackle far more complex issues of public education, tax reform, and so forth.
