Dear God, the results of that poll.

If the Legislature isn't going to do the damn job we pay them for, they at least need to make the referendum "get rid of the racist flag" or "keep the racist flag" and not put a bunch of competing choices.

Only uphill if the Gov and legislature punt and put it to a vote. I think either one of them can change it tomorrow if they want. They’re all too afraid about not getting re-elected to make the change themselves.

I don’t care one bit about the MS flag. Change it, don’t change it, whatever. Just don’t expect changing the flag to change a thing.

Which problems within the state of Mississippi will it solve? Do you really think this will make people from the north east and west coast view people from MS as anything other than backwoods rednecks?

Yes, there will still be covert racism after the flag changes. At an individual level, people will still be able to be horrible to others and discriminate against them simply due to the shade of their skin or whatever other superficial and/or inherent characteristic the victim has.

But from a macro-level, 17 yes Mississippi could benefit from this. Holy **** man- the stars and bars, which most everyone associates with the Confederacy(whether correctly or not), is on the state's flag in 2020. Thats indefensible and creating a new flag will go a long way towards improving perception from a distance.
It will generate good press and show that the state's government is actively trying to improve the state. This change can be used to help show Mississippi is ready for change in how people are viewed and treated...but then action is needed after the change to take advantage of the good press.

Lack of logical thinking/unwillingness to address the obvious dissonance? I'm currently also pleased but perplexed that a nation that finds very little value in human life seems in an uproar over a loss of life. Maybe folks will figure a few things out along the way...

Hahaha, currently at 76% of votes favor keeping the current flag.
50 gonna 50. Never change, Mississippi, you wont even if it seems most of your people want you to.

It is time for the flag to go, but I agree that it won't change how we as a state are perceived. Peaceful protests all over Mississippi and nothing in the national news. If we do it good, it doesn't matter to the folks outside MS.

The legislature did not hesitate to add "In God We Trust" to the state seal in 2014 without asking. I know that's not as controversial (it should be, but that's a topic for the next pandemic), but they didn't need our input then, they don't now.

Having a vote in Nov is a terrible idea

It puts the national eye on MS and a **** ton of pressure on all its citizens. Theres a pretty good chance it gets voted down if left up to the people. Talk about embarrassing to this state. That would do us under. No way Tater needs to leave it up to a vote.

Change it now and the national media will give us grace. Maybe even allow us to gain some momentum that leads to some positive recognition.

Leave it up to a vote and we're ******. Change it now and people might start taking this state seriously.

Which alternative to do you guys like? Images at bottom of this article

https://www.clarionledger.com/story...sippi-flag-here-some-alternatives/3421748002/

I like the Stennis version.

I can't look at the Magnolia and not thing I'm looking at a 2nd grade powerpoint template with a tree in the middle for some reason

Of the choices, I like the magnolia flag the best. The magnolia itself needs work. Doesn’t even look like a magnolia. Maybe just use a magnolia bloom? The rest of the flag is good.
I like this one because it represents symbols associated with Mississippi, not just generic stars.

Second choice would be stennis or Bonnie blue.

We need something uniquely ours.

Flags that are unique that I like:
Alabama
California (what animal would we use?)
Tennessee
Texas
South Carolina (palmetto symbol)

New Mexico flag is fantastic. Colorado's is sharp. Arizona's. South Carolina's is great. Texas's is great.

Stennis flag. Change it by legislation or referendum, I don't care. Like someone else posted, the present one is an albatross. Please, just nothing with a tree on it.

I could not care less if the flag changes or not, but you are exactly right. The legislature has the authority to do this if they would just sprout a pair and do it.

We need to change the flag, but the Stennis flag does nothing for me. Who cares if were the twentieth state versus the nineteenth or twenty first? It doesn't really say anything about Mississippi. At least the numbers on the USA flag make sense; thirteen colonies is where we started and there are fifty states now.

I think a magnolia flower is the best design motif for a new flag. We're known as the Magnolia State already and I think it's good branding going forward.

Stennis flag looks good.

I've seen some designs with a magnolia bloom in the center. Really like that idea and looks good on paper, but not sure how well it would look on an actual flag.

I just don’t expect the legislature to do that.

Based on their lack of balls in the past, what else are we to expect? Back in 2001 it was defeated by close to 30 points, so even though we are about 20 years removed from that vote and recent event will still be pretty warm come November, it would be way too close to risk. The only way the legislature and the Tot win here is growing a backbone.

I agree. Don’t like meaningless stuff. I like the magnolia idea. Where is Chillbilly when you need him?

The thing is, people who want to change the flag have to be united for there to be any chance at all. And right now, the flag with the best chance of passing is the Stennis flag. The problem with a magnolia flag is that was literally the flag we had during the Civil War. Yeah, it might look good if done right (the one we had wasn't), but we really don't need to change to another flag with ties back to the Civil War.

Then by all means change it

It will solve the problem of supporting Confederate era racist emblems on our flag and that's enough.

Then we can have one less thing to fuss about.

And changing the flag will improve the illiteracy, obesity, and poverty in the state. I’m sure all those business conventions and NCAA tournaments will be lining up to come to Jackson. The only reason they haven’t been here before is the flag.**

ETA: I’m with you on not glorifying the confederate states, I just think blaming the flag for problems in the state is complete nonsense and changing the flag will do nothing to improve any of those problems. But if you want to put a new poncho on a fat chick so she’ll look better, go ahead. I don’t think people that make fun of Mississippi and those that live there will change their opinions at all based on whatever is on the flag. That’s not why they’re laughing or avoiding doing business in Mississippi. If they wanted to do business here, they would. See the auto industry.

I'm going to be honest, after watching BlacKkKlansman, I can't unsee the red stripes on each side of the Stennis flag. It looks too much like the flag that was in David Duke's office.

If it's going to be decided by popular vote, I think it has to be a two part vote. You need to have one "Replace? yes or no" vote (maybe during primary season) and then another vote with visual choices in the fall.

One of the reasons the last flag change vote in 2001 failed was because the alternative was not well received (see below).

If you can get a vote that a change needs to be made, THEN give alternatives, you can at least get rid of the current flag and hammer out the details on how a new flag would look.

ETA: That's if the 'yes/no' question has to be a popular vote. I would much rather the legislature force the change and do a popular vote on the choices.

I'm still convinced that flag was intentionally made to be so ugly that it had no chance of getting enough votes.

I welcome the day when i'm willing to wear a hat or shirt or something showing the pride I have in being from this state.

This would be nice. Having lived in multiple states (Louisiana, Texas, and Tennessee) I opt to wear shirts and hats from those states.. not my home state and its kind of sad. The political, social implications do exist with the flag. If Mississippi had a flag that was more appropriate for the times, I'd gladly fly it. As it stands now, I can't show off my fantastic body in a stringy Mississippi tank top.

Oh I wholeheartedly agree that was the case. I'm not sure it would have won 20 years ago even if it had been actually been attractive, but making it generic and ugly sealed its fate.
