Depends to whom i am speaking. If it is someone from MS, I say State.
If it is someone not from MS, I say Mississippi State.
I can't stand Miss State, either, but it's our own fault people call us that. During much (all?) of the 90's, the first decade in which we were regularly on television, that's what we had on the front of our jerseys.State, Mississippi State, or MSU. We are NOT Miss State.
I prefer State. There aren't as many "State" schools in P5 as you might think. Out of 50 states, only 12 have a "State" school in P5, and most of them aren't nearby. The only three in the Southeast: Florida State, North Carolina State, and Mississippi State. And I hear "FSU" and "NC State" more than I hear "State" for those schools. So in most contexts, we are State. That's why I think we should try to brand ourselves as State.
Didn't we have "Miss State" in one end zone for years? Until Hail State?
Ole Miss, but I work for ESPN, so...**
No, I prefer State or MSU unless I'm talking to someone from out of state, then it's Mississippi State
This is only true because you live (or mostly interact with people who live) in/near Mississippi. People in North Carolina don't call us "State." They call NC State that. And I hear "FSU" and "NC State" more than I hear "State" for those schools. So in most contexts, we are State.
