But even they don’t use the term “State”. It’s either ‘the Tigahs” or “LSU”.

You mean "LSU"? I think if you say "State" to an LSU fan they think you're talking about Mississippi State.

With SEC folks and Texas fans, I use “State.” It seems like that’s more recognizable here in Austin, while “MSU,” which I used to use almost exclusively, leads to confusion - I can’t tell you how people ask if my shirt is: Missouri State, Michigan State or even Montana State

I say State but not living in Mississippi I get blank stares and follow up questions of, "What State?".

That's why I said in most contexts. I should have clarified that I meant the most relevant contexts: within our state and surrounding states. I didn't claim that we are "State" within the state of North Carolina. I'm saying outside of North Carolina, they are "NC State", not "State". That's in contrast to Michigan State, which is "MSU" even outside the Big Ten footprint.

My brother-in-law lives in Huntsville and refers to MSU as "Miss State". This is the first/only person I've ever heard it referred to in that way. It's cringy

I've never heard anyone here actuall say "Miss State", but most of the people who live here are from somewhere else, so just saying State doesn't mean much to them. Mississippi State is the way to go. People here also get us and Ole Miss confused.

This is only true because you live (or mostly interact with people who live) in/near Mississippi. People in North Carolina don't call us "State." They call NC State that.

^^^This right here. Work with NC State grads and they refer to their school as “STATE” just as many of us refer to MSU as “STATE”.

I’ve traveled all of Florida with work for several years and I’ve never heard a Florida State fan refer to their school as “STATE”. Don’t know why this is but in 20+ years I’ve never heard it ones.

I also work with a Michigan State grad and he’ll refer to them as STATE every now and then as well.

This. I can never use State. Always Mississippi State and that is usually followed up with “Oh is that Oxford?”

Yep, that has been a problem moving to Texas.

Same. I moved out here in 2003. I use "Mississippi State" to refer to the school, but I refer to myself as a "State" fan. There's usually some disambiguation required when I go "State" only (generally people think "Oklahoma State").
It's gotten better though, especially since A&M joined the SEC.

When asked "which State"? I used to say "Hell, there ain't but one, brother." That was probably a lot cuter before I lost my North Mississippi accent.

Weirdly, there's been an actual school named "Texas State" here for a few years now and nobody ever thinks I'm referring to them.

On the bright side, I don't have to say "no, the Rebels are from that piece of **** college in Lafayette County... which they don't even pronounce lɑːfiːˈɛt 17ing correctly" quite as often as I used to.

Its either "State" or "Mississippi State". It depends on who I am talking to and their knowledge of SEC football. I prefer to go with "State". If anybody brings the "Miss State" into my home, they are not welcome back. I still cant believe we wrote that on our jerseys for so long.

I also love the job our AD staff did about 10 years ago when they re-introduced "Hail-State" and made it the most common gesture for "State" fandom. They did an excellent job at marketing that. If you think about it, in 2008 we were not even saying "hail-state" when walking by someone in the airport wearing a state shirt. Now it's the only appropriate way to address the encounter.

STATE. I don't care what people from other states say about it. Our mission should be to market this so that the out-of-state concern goes away. And it starts with you out-of-state fans. Stand up and be proud.

We talk about 'Our State' all the time.

'Hail State' is the new greeting, whether you like it or not. We are still MSU and we are still Mississippi State. But STATE is the best branding tool. It's already on the helmets, and we can leave the M just for clarification's sake.

Time to get on board with it. I mean the responses in this thread tell you all you need to know.

Yes MISS. State in one endzone and BULLDOGS in the other endzone.

BULLDOGS... you know our mascot.... the one we are hardly ever referred to because this recent insistence on plastering HAIL STATE any and everywhere we possibly 17'n can???

I'm about sick of the HAIL STATE being everywhere. I get it, schools have catchy or traditional phrases or quips and that it is derived from our fight song and that we are trying engrain that as apart of our image and overall school moniker.

But damn it, we are the BULLDOGS , not the Mississippi State Hail States. Put BULLDOGS back in the endzone where it belongs and leave Hail State as something we say or on a shirt here or there.

As for the OP, being referred to as State works for me. I've never in person, heard anyone say MISS. STATE, that would be awful.

But I hear BO Bounds read adverstisement for The College Corner stores in Jackson, " get your Ole Miss or Hail State gear" ... ????? Can't stand that!

I might be alone on this but we're the Bulldogs and wish we would tone down the Hail State everywhere.
No offense, but you need to get over it. War Eagle works pretty good for Auburn.

Yes you can. But will you? Are you concerned more with promoting MSU or what out-of-state fans think about our name? Teach them, and they'll never have to ask again.

Invariably, when I do any kind of search on the internet and I enter "MSU", it ALWAYS pops up a bunch of Michigan State trash.
