Best of luck in the turd polishing brigade...maybe you'll rise in rank... :D
I've already served my country, my many medals including individual speak for themselves. Hope it's not too cold in your Grandmother's basement. It should warm up this week

Or would he just not return phone calls and stop communicating with recruits he knew were interested?

I seem to recall Coach Smith saying he wasn't a big fan of the transfer portal, so maybe he wouldn't accept transfers like that. Of course, I also recall him saying we'd "run more" as well, so maybe I can't take him at his word on that either.

The stories on recruiting from the Tubby era were legendary. The Marshall Moses saga has to be an all time classic. The other was the kid, forget his name, who grew up a UK fan but ended up at UNC. But, I also remember KSR reporting that UK was recruiting a kid in Florida but, when contacted, the kid said he didn't know UK was even interested. Nobody had called him. He got a call the day AFTER the story ran!

So in what areas of coaching (minus recruiting) do you see Cal superior?
Reread my first sentence in the post you quoted and you have my answer. That doesn't mean Tubby is automatically better or I'd want Tubby back. Going on wins, FF appearances, title game appearances, and turning UMASS and Memphis into something for a few years is more than Tubby has ever done. Cal has been awful (esp in the tourney) the last few years, but if you want to cherry pick stats and timeframes, you could probably make Mike Davis look better than Cal.

You have an agenda. That's fine, but the agenda is clearly there with cherry picked stats and awful looking, cheaply crafted anti-Cal memes. You do you though.

I think Tubby thought UK was the Gold Standard long before it came out of Cal's mouth. Tubby wasn't arrogant enough to publicly declare it like Cal. Having said that, he thought the UK name would recruit itself and the players would just naturally gravitate towards Lexington. As great of a coach as he is and it being Kentucky, he really shouldn't have had to beg players to come. I give him credit for not doing so. At the same time, that is part of the game. Had Tubby been born earlier and his coaching prime came in the 70s or 80s, its untelling how many titles he would have had to his name.

I also think Tubby would have accepted a transfer because he did at UK with Patrick Sparks and he also utilized Heshimu Evans quite well.

Tubby did it worse.... he was ignoring interested recruits and dubbed TLT.
I had no problem with Tubby and would have been fine if he had stayed.
the same folks who are trying to go after Cal's job... were after Tubby's.
instead of complaining about the dribble drive, they were complaining about Tubby's complicated grinding offense.

Which version of Tubby would you like, because after he left UK, he was shall we say, less than impressive. Love the guy and he deserves praise, but if you want High Point Tubby twice on Sundays, you're going 0-2 by nightfall.
0-2 in a day….something Cal would definitely lead us to if we played a doubleheader!

I see "Tubby knew when to leave" and have to laugh.

He was told that he was a good ambassador for Kentucky basketball but needed to surround himself with better assistant coaches instead of Reggy Hanson, etc. Instead of doing that, he ducked out the back door in the middle of the night.

So yeah, he knew it was time to go when he couldn't get his buddies paid.

I remember Saul dribbling at the top of the key well into the shot clock.

maybe I'm missing the complicated part

Tubby was loyal, some may say to a fault but I find it quite admirable. He didn't believe in selling out his assistants so he chose to leave for a lesser job and try to take on a new challenge. He also wanted to work with his sons as they broke into coaching and he couldnt do that at UK because of the nepotism rule, if I am not badly mistaken. He made a sacrifice that any good parent would have made knowing their kid would benefit from it.

And to think some think he didn't deserve to be in rafters.

I think we'd go 1-1, but then again there's the chance that a couple of our guys trip over a blade of grass and need to sit out too. I'm kidding of course, but the amount of little injuries we've had never helped either.

What?????? Moving from a school where you can't get your kids paid to a school where you can get them paid is a "sacrifice". LOL. Sell his assistants out? They were bringing in Bobby Perry and Sheray Thomas for Pete's sake. Tubby was lazy as all get out. Period.

^ I don't recall ever seeing that. He won a title and that's an automatic banner in the rafters, imo. A Final Four MOP, a NPOTY, or coaching a title team, should get your name in the rafters.

Anyway, Tubby was a disaster at the end. His recruiting sucked balls. Just look at the roster Billy G. received.

Cal is going to bounce either this year or after next and I'm sure it will end in disaster as well. Looking back since Rupp, Hall's last year had 13 losses, Sutton's had 19 losses and probation, Pitino ended high, Tubby ended with 25 losses his final two years and two first weekend exits, Billy ended with 27 losses in his lone two years and no NCAA tourney victories and actually went to the NIT.

I wouldn't say lazy, just a man of principles and character. Sometimes recruits just don't pan out. He also brought in Jodie Meeks and Joe Crawford and got the ball rolling towards getting Patrick Patterson to UK.

Pitino lost to a 4 seed in the National Championship game. Even without Derek Anderson if he was the genius people made him out to be, he should have outcoached Lute Olsen and beaten that team. Not exactly ending high either if you are going to bring up the other coaches shortcomings

It does take a character to start your undeserving son at point guard for a legendary program, that’s for sure.

I usually agree with most of your posts on here, though I guess we will just have to agree to disagree about Tubby and Saul.

That 4 seed beat the overall best team that year Kansas, then beat a UNC team that had Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison, and their fantastic guards were a huge problem for our team who had injuries and foul trouble.

We had trouble with fast guards that year which is why South Carolina beat us twice. So without Anderson, we had Epps and Turner. That’s it. Edwards was hurt and could only play six mins, Shepp was redshirted, Mills couldn’t guard anyone. So Bibby, Simon, and Terry were just too fast and our roster wasn’t gonna do anything about it. And it still took free throws for Arizona to win in OT.

I don’t put the Zona loss on coaching at all. Mercer was banged up from a very physical game with Minnesota and then Zona was just a bad matchup for us given our injuries.

Spot on. Tubby hit prime in 1998. I believe he would have been alot more successful, 80's.

I admire Orlando Smith the man but I will never forgive him for playing Saul against Damon Bailey at the Hoosier Dome when UK was ranked number one (1993). I have permanent hearing loss from the IU fans tearing the roof off the joint to this day. Never mind the cold walk of shame back to the car which seemed like an eternity. Sometimes a wake up in a cold sweat cursing Saul Smith's name. PTSD isn't just for war.

I didn't read the whole thread but I read enough to know.............CP be laying the wood. 😅

You must be blind. Have you seen the latest dumb thread he just posted? He's getting destroyed, LOL. The lunch box gang has a cumulative IQ of 47 and the board sees them as nothing but petulant children who just got their I phones taken away.

Fun to watch. Hope they keep it up.

Still not an accurate comparison. BCG never had a year 12 and 13 at Kentucky. Compare their first two years.
The idea is to show how far Cal has fallen. No one denies the first 5 years were amazing. But the results coming now are on par with Billy G. That should get everyone’s attention
