China was prepared because their people are oppressed and have no freedom other than what government gives them. So if the government says go in your house and don’t come out for a month people will do it or disappear. The USA is a free and open system in which people revolt if the government tells them what to do. With a free open society you’re never prepared to lockdown your country. If Rudy gobert had pulled that garbage in China he would be in a work camp for 20 years maybe even executed. Don’t confuse freedom with ill preparedness

The main fear we should have is not the deadliness of the virus, but of it’s impact on the economy, as well as the overall societal structure currently in place.
Low to mid-salary workers are the backbone of large corporations. Take for example delivery truck drivers for Walmart/Kroger etc. If a few of them get sick, other workers are more likely to call in sick/claim sick. The current consensus is those infected or in contact with infected need to quarantine for two weeks. The work force could really take a hit here causing lasting impacts across many forms of commerce.
Of course well-feeling adults who need money will work but there’s a lot of hysteria right now. It’s hard to predict what could happen but the **** happening in Italy is downright scary.
There’s also the fear that hospitals can’t handle the surge in infected patients as well as those presenting with somewhat milder symptoms. Hospitals simply cannot handle large surges of a virus that causes symptoms for weeks.
I think the media is causing a lot more hysteria that is warranted but you’re in denial to think this will just be a footnote in history. This is a big deal. I don’t trust China and the numbers they’re reporting either.

Unless South Korea has significantly better healthcare or a secret cure they’re hiding, their death rate of ~0.7% is much closer to reality. Even then, I hope it will drop even further, as even their testing isn’t ubiquitous.

Damn near every single number quoted in this thread is wrong or mentioned out of context. If the numbers don't come directly from the CDC, its basically crap. Also, you are watching science unfold. The measure errors are extreme, still. There is no reliable baseline. There is not a uniformly available test kit. The growth rate reflects test kit distribution as much as virus propagation. Politics is playing HUGE role. Everyone is spinning this to the tune of their political affiliation, here, in the media and elsewhere. The decisions are being made to manage many things, not just the death rate.

You could've already had coronavirus in your life and gotten over it and didn't know it that's what I've been trying to explain to folks. You get crap like this every year and you get over it you just call it the cold or sinus infection etc
Gross hysteria from a new form of flue, yes it's bad just like all the other new flue types that have come out over the years.. Is it going to take a few lives, maybe it will and does.. People with little common sense get excited to easily and need to calm down.. This will pass just like all the other illness that come around..

They are testing and asking people to quarantine if dx or have underlying issues and catching it quickly.,, from reports I have seen.
They are the only country with common sense.

CDC has to get their numbers from somewhere. We know China is lying about theirs.
There’s no great reason more testing will lower the death rate, the super sick still end up in the hospital after they’ve gotten pneumonia. Some may catch pneumonia there when they go in early, and there are studies showing that hospital-strains of pneumonia have higher mortality rates than otherwise.
It could lower the contamination rate potentially by encouraging self-quarantines though.
Well, my neighbor got it on a cruise last week and now I'm pretty sure I've got it. Don't even think testing is available in my area, so no way to be 100% sure. If this is it, not too bad so far.

It’s increased at a rate of 7.96 (796%) from March 4 to March 11. If it were to continue at that rate, the entire country will have been infected at some points within just under the next 7 weeks. And that’s just numbers on confirmed cases, there are probably hundreds if not more walking around spreading it during the incubation period and they don’t even know they have it yet.
This is why such drastic measures are being taken. It is mission critical to slow the speed of infection or the hospital system will collapse and people who need to be treated aren’t going to be. Me to be treated. Hospitals and doctors will have to decide which patients they will treat and which ones will have to be cast aside to die.
Even if only .01% of people that contracted it died and it got to the point of infecting half the USA population
SK also primarily has tested younger people because the first case of it came from a younger person who was in a huge cluster of people who’ve skewed younger. The median age of the people they’ve tested has been 40. The death rate from confirmed cases there is going to be younger just because of who they’ve tested.
Meanwhile Italy and China has primarily tested older people. China’s median age is 50 and Italy’s 65.
I’ve never heard of a person dying from a cold or sinus infection unless it caused something more serious to develop like pneumonia and had that kill them.
