It would be stupid to do that, and so would retiring his number around the league. The man was a great basketball player only! His legacy has a serious stain on it! It's a terrible tragedy for everyone involved. I truly feel sorry for the families involved, but Kobe was in no way a role model that people should look up to. I just hope he changed over time and made things right with his Maker. He deserved forgiveness if he asked for it like we all do and all need from time to time.

Laughable

No. I copied from the post that I quoted. That poster copied it from Wiki.

The following is copied from the transcript of his conversation with the police.

"We were still only this close and she gets up and she gives me a kiss so I kiss her back and then you know I started caressing her or whatever and then she puts her hand on my you know my thing or whatever and it kinda goes from there."
"Theres um, a little um, chair, like a cushion where you sit down, and she had her leg up, she bent herself over like this."

Umm ...you do realize that quote represents only Kobe's version of that story, right? (and, even if true, it in NO way justifies what he did after that). It's not her version, she does admit that she was voluntarily kissing him, but claims she then tried to leave, but he blocked the door and would not let her leave ..and then things got really ugly.

Obviously, there's always gonna be two sides telling different subjective stories with something like this, but it's worth noting that the objective medical evidence matched HER side of the story far more than his.

And that medical evidence was not just the bruises, but also lacerations and tears to her genitalia that the medical examiners explicitly found were caused by forced, and not consensual, penetration. So the objective evidence plainly indicated that she did not want his junk inside of her, but he forced it in anyways.. We have a word for that sort of thing ...it begins with R.

Why? He didn't play for all the teams. I mean it was a tragedy that he passed but Wilt, Bird, Jordan, Magic, Dr J, they are all going to die from either an accident or natural causes at some point. Are we doing to have every team retire that number when they do?

I'd rather they just retire 24 across the league

I couldn't imagine ever having to give someone money and issue an apology to them over something I didn't do. Defies logic.

I could imagine an all-world basketball player paying someone off to save their *** from facing criminal prosecution.

Meh. Logic. Who needs it. Just tell your own narrative.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/kobe-...ce-the-accusers-story-and-the-half-confession

This comment always sticks out. “She wasn’t that attractive,” said Bryant. As if he were doing her a favor by having sex with her.

Using that same line of thinking, couldn’t it be said that if she truly was assaulted then she should have wanted him behind bars, not taken his money?

The back and forth can go on all day. Only 2 people truly know what happened in that room.

She also probably didn’t want to stand trial and have her life torn apart by media and the public. Her taking a settlement has no bearings on whether it happened or not. Also, if you have a lot of money I can see why someone would pay even if they thought they were innocent. Even if you believe you’re incident, why take a chance with a jury and risk everything when a few hundred grand means you don’t spend your life in jail and you can continue with an NBA career?

The settlement implies nothing about what happened. Like you said, we don’t really know what happened. Only those 2 knew.

Agreed. Kobe issuing an apology, written be her lawyers FYI, and paying some money was a no brainer rather than putting your hands in the unknown with a jury trial.

It's not a back and forth. Because she is a sexual assault victim and he was a famous person. Her face would have been out there. People would have known who she was. It would have been the biggest spectacle since the OJ trial. She would have had to go through people saying, Oh, hes a celebrated he doesn't need to rape her. On and on and on. Just like what you would be doing to her like you are right now in this discussion. Think about that for a moment.

I know your hero couldn't do any wrong, but he did. He's a philandering rapist who happened to be able to shoot a little ball through a basket. She did the smart thing by taking the money. She got an apology and kept her face and name from being plastered everywhere in the world.

The evidence is there and so are Kobe's words.

1. Kobe is/was not my hero. People i admire have nothing to do with sports.

2. Her name and face was already out there.

3. Lol if you believe those are “Kobe’s words.” That is a statement written by her lawyers. She was smart to take the money, he was smart to pay it.

4. Only those 2 know what really happened.

I agree. I’ve been trying to think of some untimely sports related death that was analogous but I can’t think of one. Roberto Clemente was all I could come up with but, great as he was, he wasn’t the baseball equivalent of Kobe. I personally think it would be a good tribute to him, especially considering that Jerry West doesn’t seem to give a poop about being the logo anyway.
What about Lou Gehrig?

1. Fine.

2. It would have been way worse had that gone to trial.

3. Those are Kobe's words. They sound just like Kobe. Kobe is a tremendously articulate guy. She was smart to take the money because it saved her from having to rehash this over and over in front of strangers who will doubt her(she will always have to remember it anyway). He was smart to pay the money. It kept him from going to trial, being convicted, and serving a life sentence or a very long prison term.

4. Only those 2 do know what happened. Only 1 of them however paid money for it to go away and also issued an apology.

That was a press release written and issued by HER lawyers. Seriously, go look it up at how that statement came about. Those are nowhere near Kobe’s words.

Bryant was accused of “raping and chocking a 19-year-old” in 2003, writer Jessica Valenti explains. After being arrested and charged with felony assault, the case was eventually dropped. (Mainly due to the number of death threats and smears against her character that came from Bryant’s defense team, as well as his own fans).

The back and forth can go on all day. Only 2 people truly know what happened in that room.

This sort of thing is NOT mere "back and forth" between two people:

During the preliminary hearing, Det. Winters testified that the accuser had been examined the day after the alleged assault by Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) at the Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

“[The nurse] stated that there were several lacerations to the victim’s posterior fourchette or vaginal area, and two of those lacerations were approximately one centimeter in length,” testified Det. Winters. “And there were many, I believe, 2 millimeter lacerations. Too many to count… [The nurse] stated that the injuries were consistent with penetrating genital trauma. That it’s not consistent with consensual sex.”

Det. Winters further stated that the nurse told him the vaginal injuries had most likely occurred within “24 hours,” and that the accuser had “bruises on her left jaw line.” Also, that examiners had found “blood excretions” on Bryant’s T-shirt “to about the waistline.” The blood, testified Det. Winters, had “the same DNA profile as the victim in this case.”

How do you explain away that? I'm sorry, but the "well, maybe she liked it rough" excuse ain't adequate to cover "too many to count" lacerations consistent with non-consensual traumatic genital penetration.

It's also worth noting that only one side maintained a consistent story, whereas Kobe kept changing his. When he was first interviewed by police, he lied his *** off and claimed he didn't have sex with her at all, only changing his story after learning they had his DNA samples. Then he claims he didn't ejaculate, only to later adjust that after learning they had his ***** sample. His story was all over the place.

I know we like Kobe and want him to be innocent but, you know, sometimes you've just got to take your head out of the sand regarding things you don't want to be true.

Bigger than basketball man

Help me understand your reasoning? Of course the tragic death of someone is bigger than basketball and most everything else. While I recognize Kobe’s legacy, I don’t have enough telling me why his death is bigger than any other great player who came before him. If you are talking just popularity and career accomplishments only, I suppose I understand but you said it’s bigger than basketball......that’s the part I don’t understand (except for my comment about tragedy).

Piggybacking off of this.....

She reported her case to the police right away. When they questioned Bryant, he thrice denied having had sex with her before he learned they’d taken ***** and blood evidence, and then he admitted the two had had sexual intercourse. He insisted it was consensual.

Jordan has had nearly 2 decades of retirement, his children are adults. It would be awful but this is different. If MJ died in 2005 then 23 would be retired Leage wide.
I agree with this and many want it retired just because. I’ll never think of 23 as anybody else, but he was the dude and my childhood.

Here's a question.

Let's say the NBA does have a discussion about changing the logo. Does it have to be Collectively bargained? Do they just start replacing the logo with a silhouette of Kobe? What exactly is the process. Hell, do they even have one. Who would have thought this up, well other than the dude who ranks people's deaths?

The business side of changing the logo is gargantuan I would imagine. They can’t just change the logo in a Twitter announcement and that be it.

I’m not trying to explain away anything. My initial response was to a poster asking if he was innocent why issue the statement and pay the money? By contrast, if she was assaulted, why not see it through to the end?

There are certainly things that could have gotten Kobe fried in court. Also somethings that would have worked in his favor imo. We’re all free to interpret the documents of the case however we want. Only those 2 know what happened and who was lying.

He paid the money because he's a rapist who didn't want to go to jail. He issued the apology, not because he was sorry, but because it's one of the reasons that kept this young woman from pushing ahead with the case.

Why not pursue it to the end? The reason she didn't was because Kobe's defense team was running her name through the mud. She was getting death threats. She would have had to get up on stand and go over every detail. She would, at 19 years old, have to deal with a team of lawyers breathing down her neck questioning not just this, but everything she's ever done in her life. It's amazing really that anyone ever reports being raped.

Btw, we know who was lying. Kobe Bryant was asked 3 times if he had sex with her. He denied each time until he was told about the blood evidence and rape kit test. We also know his character at the time. He was a philanderer.

And then ask if offered $500k (I have no idea what Kobe paid) if you’d still feel that way. I’d take the money.

I'm sure it was plenty more than that. The terms of the settlement were confidential, so only they should know for sure, but the number I've repeatedly seen sources claim it was is $2.5 million.

So, yeah, not exactly a tough choice for her. Pocket millions and return to your former peaceful life ...or go through the misery of having his team of lawyers try to drag your name through the mud in a media circus criminal trial? I know which one of those options sounds better to me.

“only one maintained a consistent story”....no:

“A few weeks before the trial was scheduled to begin, the accuser wrote a letter to state investigator Gerry Sandberg clarifying some details of her first interview by Colorado police. She wrote, "I told Detective Winters that on that morning while leaving I had car troubles. That was not true. When I called in late to work that day that was the reason I gave my boss for being late. In all reality, I had simply overslept . . . I told Detective Winters that Mr. Bryant had made me stay in the room and wash my face. While I was held against my will in that room, I was not forced to wash my face. I did not wash my face. Instead, I stopped at the mirror by the elevator on that floor to clean my face up. I am extremely disappointed in myself and also very sorry to anyone misled by that mix-up of information. I said what I said because I felt that Detective Winters did not believe what had happened to me."

You don’t just pay money and get to avoid prison time/a criminal trial. They dismissed the criminal case because she refused to testify, not because Kobe paid her anything. She dismissed the civil case because of the money, but that part had nothing to do with him avoiding the criminal case, which had already been dismissed for nearly a year by the time he agreed to pay out a settlement

She refused to testify because of the money, the death threats, and the pressure of having to go through with a trial and everything that would have come with that. They were in essence, calling her a crazy slut.
