Answer: Zamar Wise had a signing day ceremony at Barringer on Wednesday, coordinated by his head coach Dwayne Williams. Apparently, they were given the go-ahead on the ceremony, while some of the logistics are still being worked out.

Technically, it was more of a commitment affirmation than actual signing, as Wise did not sign a national letter of intent. The staff still covets Wise and his athletic tools, but he still has some academic work to do. Rutgers is working with him and his support system to get him qualified, and he's close enough to make it in.

I've also been told the staff will hold on to his scholarship, as he'll add great value to the program. However, the staff can't risk having a recruit sign a LOI without being 100 percent sure he'll qualify -- especially after its experience with Juwan Mitchell, who signed but returned to Butler junior college, after falling one class short.

If Wise were to sign and not make it in, Rutgers would lose the scholarship, which would count against its 25 initial counters, whether he qualifies or not.

Wise is committed to Rutgers with a chance to make it to campus this summer. However, it will take coordination, planning and focus down the stretch to get it done.

Wow. I know there is mutual benefit here but to say RU is going out of its way for this kid would be an under statement imho.

I hope it works out and at a minimum if it doesn't, because he couldn't get in. Not leaving us at the alter. Would be the biggest kick in the nuts maybe ever?

Blue Shirt most likely for Wise and Ugwu. From what I heard blue shirts can not have official visit to the school and will also not count against the 25 limit. They do not sign LOI but can be put on scholarship at the start of practice. They can practice but can’t play, just like a redshirt.

Didn’t wise official here? He was commited for over a year wasn’t he. Also do blue shirts count against the following year classes?

If he can’t pass high school, will he ever really contribute at RU? Can’t imagine he’ll have an easier time in college while being a student athlete

Not necessarily true at all. With the right support system in place such as tutors etc. as well as an inner drive to succeed, any kid can be as much a winner in the classroom as he is on the field if he wants it bad enough and applies himself. Hopefully he will get that opportunity at Rutgers.

And if it doesn't work out but he looks to be a talented player - he can always transfer to UNC or a lower level SEC school.
I do wish him luck and as stated, with all the systems in place to help SA's, he will be better able to pass college courses then HS

Or just wait a few days and we’ll know for sure and save money!

Might be a little longer than that :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:. Also premium is only $3.99 a month right now, so now's your chance -- just saying!

A blue shirt can not sign or be sent a LOI, nor can they take an official visit. They count toward the following year. As Zach said, they can practice and go on scholarship at freshmen camp. Wise gave a verbal commitment but did not sign a formal LOI, as far as I understand.

While he may be well on track, I don't see how he can be "good to go" until his final grades are in.

He will qualify. That is my understanding from 3 very good sources. I am a bit skeptical but they are very good sources who are intimately associated with the situation. Hope for the best.

I have my sources but can’t tell you their names . I think you can respect that.
I’m good with that. But you’ll have to forgive me if I hold off on the ticker tape until it’s official.

Same here, need to have Wise officially made part of the program and not count on it till then.

I would add that since the LOI signing period has passed, Wise remains a free agent until he actually enrolls, presumably in June. Some team could flip him at the 11th hour. Or RU could back off. Not saying either will happen, just that they could.
