I like how 36 total deaths in a county is being called out as the worst per capita. One thing I learned early in engineering is junk science... comparing absolute numbers vs percentage and using whichever is more impactful.
I learned how to spot this in workplace presentations after many years... journalists learn how to perfect this before they graduate.
Small denominators make for big percentages. 10 cases in New York=nothing. 10 cases in Kemper County = the apocalypse as far as percentages go. Makes for lazy journalism.
Numbers are improving tremendously. Got to do something to get the fear levels back up before people start thinking for themselves.
So what number are you going to use? The 7 day average rate of infection per 100K is the number that has been used by most throughout this thing. It's a pretty good snapshot of the current state of affairs. For me, it’s just weird when you’re saying it’s the worst county in the state based on a week’s worth of daily new cases. That works better when comparing states since the populations are so much higher, but when you’re comparing small population counties, it isn’t very useful. One exposure (e.g. single church service, wedding, funeral) or even one household could significantly swing the numbers. The article did supply numbers showing Yalobusha has been hit hard throughout the last year, but the “worst county” designation in the article was only based on one week’s worth of data
So 500 cases in DeSoto county is the same as 500 in Issaquena county then? For counties across a state (assuming many have small populations), looking at daily new cases over a month (or 4 weeks) makes more sense. Even two weeks would be a big step up. For states, a week is fine.
I meant daily new cases per 100,000 over a 4 week period*. Not absolute numbers.
This looks like a bot generated article. A few boilerplate paragraphs with injected state-specific information.
The map showing low red state vax adoption is telling. Turns out all the people who were disgusted at the fear of the virus are afraid of the shot. They also tend to justify it by distrust of the government that was actually put on the sideline to allow the vax to be moved forward quickly without government red tape. Critical thinking is about as common as common sense these days...

Preach brother. Stats are only as good as the person analyzing them.I like how 36 total deaths in a county is being called out as the worst per capita. One thing I learned early in engineering is junk science... comparing absolute numbers vs percentage and using whichever is more impactful.
