Oops. He claims that he misspoke, but he also sat many of the big bats for the game vs Italy.

In an appearance Tuesday morning with Matt Vasgersian and Harold Reynolds on "Hot Stove" on MLB Network, where DeRosa works as an analyst, he said of the game against Italy: "We want to win this game even though our ticket's punched to the quarterfinals."

Team USA's ticket was not punched -- and its fate now depends on the results of Italy and Mexico's contest Wednesday night, the final game of the WBC's Pool B.

That was a great, well played game! USA was the beneficiary of a few low called strike 3s, especially the last one. But what a game!
I hate that the last pitch was called incorrectly. What I’m going to hate even more is how it will be turned into Chris Webber’s timeout over the next few days. It didn’t cost the DR the win. It cost them a chance to have Tatis hit with runners on the corners and two outs still. Absolutely no guarantee the DR ties that game up. In fact, the odds would still favor Miller to get Tatis and end the game.

Never want to see a great game come down to that and it's clearly avoidable with the technology. Soto struck out earlier on a bad call as well.....it happens, but it shouldn't these days.

That said, the WBC has been pure cinema almost game. I know I'm different, but how folks can watch baseball and think it's boring just doesn't compute in my brain.....

That game encompassed everything baseball is in 2026
  • Incredible stuff on the mound
  • 3 solo homers
  • Failing to get guys in from 3rd with less than 2 outs (both teams had 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and didn't score)
  • Electric defense
  • A really dumb baserunning mistake by Tatis
It was a really fun game. Turns out Paul Skenes and essentially 3 closers on the back end is what it takes to hold down that Dominican lineup.

It was great theater. I do still feel like MLB has got to figure out its strikeout problem…as so many outs are now recorded via strikeout. Even last night, the USA struck out 15 times (and the DR 6 times in the last four innings). I don’t know if there is a fix for it. Pitchers are throwing so hard now and spinning the ball so much…perhaps it will just be a bit before the bats catch up. But balls in play do make for more exciting games.

I'd back the mound up but that's a massive change and would have to be done incrementally. I understand it's not simple to do. But the game has changed too much in that direction.

I know that the purists likely disagree, but the pregame stuff was hype.
