Friday night into Saturday morning is going to be a soaker, but the rain for Philly is likely to be just about over by kickoff. Too early to tell, though, as 1 or 2 models have the precip exiting in the late afternoon, while most have it exiting the area by about noon (~6 hours difference is huge for fans, but a small variable 5+ days out in a forecast) - should have a better handle on timing by Weds/Thursday.

Likely going to be a close call right up until gameday on Saturday, as some models are showing the rain largely over by early afternoon, while some still show some showers in the afternoon and early evening. The heavy rain certainly looks to be over by noon - the question is whether some lingering light to moderate showers might persist through the afternoon.

It would be easier to show in equations, but I doubt most people will get that, so here are a lot of words I just posted on FB on the NWS page in answer to the same question...

Yes, snow can accumulate with surface temps at 33-34F or even higher. The governing equation for snowfall accumulation is simple: if the snowfall rate (in inches per hour, e.g.) exceeds the melting rate (in inches per hour), then snow will accumulate. It's that simple. Now, determining the melting rate is not simple at all, as that's a function of the surface temp (which is different for paved surfaces vs. grassy/colder surfaces), which is influenced by the ground temp underneath, the air temp, the degree of indirect sunlight reaching the ground (during daylight), whether salt is present, etc.

Having said that, though, a good rule of thumb based on experience and crude calculations, is that one needs snowfall rates of 1/2"/hr or more when the surface temp is 33-34F and with a high sun angle (like in March), but only about 1/4" or so when it's 33-34F at the surface at night. Keep in mind that even if the surface temp is 50F 8 hours before snow starts, the falling/melting snow will cool the surface down quickly into the mid-30s as energy is transferred from the warm ground to the snow to effect melting (which requires energy input).

Finally, one very important factor in any borderline situation, like this one. If the snowfall rate becomes heavy (like 1" per hour rates), the snow will accumulate in broad daylight at 35F in April, let alone at night at 34F in December. And once a layer of snow is established on the ground, that snow is, by definition, at 32F, meaning subsequent snow that falls will no longer melt at anywhere near the rate it would on bare ground, as one has 32F snow falling on 32F snow on the ground. So if a foothold can be gained where snow accumulates, subsequent snow that falls will only be subject to melting from the 33-34F air temp, which would only lead to melting rates in the 1/8" per hour range. Hope that helps.

I'd like to see the equations, which I certainly hope take into account radiant and convective heating and cooling.

Exactly as I predicted down here. No snow on the road surfaces, but the grass is lightly covered. Do the snowfall amounts in my post above account for snow on grass vs. snow on roads (which is all people really care about)?

Mainly cosmetic snow in No. Plfd. down to NB. That's the way I like snow.

Can you keep providing updates? I will be attending the game this year. Thanks!

Yes, I have been going every year for about the last 9 years. Been about 12 times in total.

It is by far my favorite event to attend.
Love it as well. Moved to Philly in 1988. Been going ever since including Baltimore and Meadowlands.
If you park in Lot N/M. Look for the General's Hot Sauce small trailer at the top of the stairs to Lot N. I'll be wearing a Rutgers cap with the USNA Class of 86.

Snowfall reports for NJ/E PA from the NWS-Philly and for NJ/NYC/LI/SE NY from the NWS-NYC. FYI, there's no fact-checking involved from the NWS, which is how one ends up with reports of 0.1" in Woodbridge and Old Bridge at 7 am this morning - this means these folks likely measured on a paved surface, instead of a snowboard, as there's no way, looking at the radar history, that those towns didn't get similar to what we got in the Edison area, close by (I got 1.25").

I am leaving for a long journey through the south ultimately landing back in San Diego where weather is a non event. I hope Numbers gets record breaking snowfall this winter but just in Metuchen so he can build a 50 foot snowperson..

Not much change in the Army-Navy gameday forecast, except to say that every model now has all the heavy rain over with by about noon on Saturday. After that there's some divergence in the models on whether or not there will be some rain showers on what should be a fairly mild day for mid-Dec, with high temps in the low/mid 50s (normal is 45/30F for 12/14 in Philly), but even the models that show some showers are showing only about 0.1" of rain from about 1-7 pm, which, based on whiny-girl-fan experience around here is more than nuisance rain (0.1" is nuisance rain to me, especially if you dress for it).

By the way, some models are showing some snow (a few inches possible) for early Tuesday morning, while some are showing just about all rain, except for far NW areas. If this starts to look like more of a threat, will start a thread on it tonight.

That's a fine wish that I'm sure everyone in Metuchen will rejoice in, should it be granted. Enjoy your trip...

Still looks to be fairly mild for mid-Dec with temps in the low/mid-50s for highs (normal high is 45F) and the heavy rain will be over by late morning. However, there still could be a few showers though, but not washout level showers, i.e., maybe 0.1" of rain from 1-7 pm. Wind shouldn't be a factor either. Enjoy the game.

Thanks. I'm just so happy I won't have to wear multiple layers and gloves hats and scarfs. The last 3 years in particular was a battle to stay warm. We were due for warm one.

These forecast aren't SNOW, 2 - 3 inches !!??

When I was at Syracuse, one weekend it snowed 84 inches in 48 hours. Which seemed like a lot till it was announced that Oswego (town on Lake Ontario north of Cuse) got 103 inches.

Mary Anne had to jump from her 2 floor bedroom to shovel out her homes front and rear door.

Every road was closed, only way to get around was ski's, snowshoes, or skidoos.

Now that's SNOW.

Only one significant change and that is the forecast is now for winds to pick up in the late afternoon to 10-20 mph and by the end of the game there could be gusts to 30 mph. That wasn't really in the forecast, but as I've said countless times, winds are extremely hard to predict well in advance. Still looking like only some occasional showers after about noon with total rainfall likely about 0.1" or less from 1-7 pm - although I should mention that there do look to be some heavier showers 75-100 miles west of Philly in the afternoon, but right now the models aren't showing those hitting Philly (small chance it could happen though). Temps should remain over 50F the whole game, though.

Yeah, but last year on 11/15, 4-6" of snow at the wrong time, when under-forecasted by nearly everyone, combined with non-existent snow removal from unprepared crews, resulted in area-wide gridlock with people stuck for hours on highways and kids even stuck in their schools with no way home. It's all relative. It's on my bucket list to experience lake effect snow like that.

Hey, are you the same BigWill, who posted regularly around here 10+ years ago? If so, welcome back and if not, welcome!

This weather has sucked lately. Nothing but rain it seems 4-5 days a week. It feels like April through June. Seems like my grass is still growing. Give me some snow!

Chances of rain were significantly reduced in this morning's updated forecast, as shower chances are in the 20% range from 1-7 pm, now, vs. 50-70% the past few days (even though light showers) - shouldn't be more than 0.05" of rain today, which is definitely nuisance level rain, especially when temps are in the mid-50s. Will be breezy through mid-afternoon and then getting downright windy with gusts to 30 mph after about 4-5 pm. Good football weather, especially for running teams.
