I'm 28, and so never watched Wilt games growing up, and forgive me, haven't taken the time to go back and watch them. But I'm familiar with his accomplishments, and his name is unavoidable in basketball conversations everywhere. But a lot about the man seems more like myth than fact. Everything from him being a seven-footer with a 48-inch vertical (http://theexercisers.com/how-to-inc...e-vertical-jump/highest-vertical-jump-in-nba/) to his claim to having slept with 20,000 women.

What about this guy was real? Did he actually play at almost 300 pounds? Did he really have a 9'6" standing reach *without* shoes? Did he have a better vertical than Hamidou Diallo?

Yes
And yes.

Could high jump 7'0"

Dunk from 18'

And eat the rim

Even in his old Laker years he could still sky

Got his autograph on his basketball card when I was a kid. Wonder what it is worth?

Depends on what the card is and condition. Either way it's worth a good bit.

One of my fathers favorite pieces is a 1970's statue of Wilt in the Lakers purple uniform. It's signed at his feet. He won this in a memorabilia auction back then and today it's one of only 4 known to exist.

For those that wonder, it's a heavy ***** that obviously is worth a small house.

Wilt was possibly the greatest athlete in basketball history. His fade away jumper was unstoppable. The greatest defender in basketball of that era, Bill Russell would often hold him under 25 points, when Wilt was having an off day.

Speaking of sports memorabilia I have a 1927 Babe Ruth baseball card that my daddy had as a boy and an autographed Mickey Mantle baseball.

Im only 30 but Mantle is my guy. Me and pops are big memorabilia collectors and our Mantle auto's are the most treasured (even though we're big stl fans). I got to meet him when I was around 10 in the 90's at an auto signing. Have never forgotten it

Imagine if the Mick had slowed down and stopped drinking? Goat? I think so.

My favorite auto's are our inscribed signed baseballs by mick, a game used pair of pants, and an autographed 8x10 of the Mick frok his rookie season when he wore the number 6.

Think Willie Cauley Stein...only a little better athlete and much more skilled basketball player. When Wilt was motivated, he was a phenom.

Us old guys like to (exaggerate) portray old time players as best of all time. Wilt was legit.

Had a chance to get my hands on a 1920's yankees signed baseball. Didn't want to spend the money at the time but I am kicking myself now.

I actually think Wilt was not only the greatest basketball player to ever play but I think he is or well may be the greatest athlete of all time. Basketball, track and field, boxing, professional volleyball and the list goes on. 7 feet 1 and 305 pounds. There was literally nothing he could not do athletically.

Gymnastics. He was lousy at the Uneven Bars because his legs kept hitting the other bar.

Did I ever tell you about the time Wilt Chamberlain showed up at my daughter’s wedding? You know my daughter, she’s a beautiful girl. Well, Chamberlain shows up and you know he’s a big fella. Well, he’s standing right between me and my daughter at the ceremony. He’s got no right to be there, but he’s drunk and he’s Chamberlain. Well, long story short, the priest accidentally marries me and Chamberlain. We spend the weekend in the Poconos — he loved me like I’ve never been loved befor

It is generally agreed upon that he was the strongest athlete in any professional sport, in his prime. He was 7'1", 275 lbs, and could bench press 500 lbs.

Wilt is my favorite player of all time to this day !! I remember hearing a story Bob Lanier who played for the pistons and was 6'11" and over 300lbs told about him and Wilt and how strong Wilt was. Bob said he and Wilt were battling for position and he caught Wilt with an elbow , he said I am a big man but Wilt grabbed me and picked me up off my feet over here and whirled me around like a child and sat me down over there . He then told him little man next time i won't be so easy with you .

If Wilt played today, he would still be the most dominant single player. He would be the highest paid, most coveted player.

Chamberlain holds numerous NBA records in scoring, rebounding, and durability categories. He is the only player to score 100 points in a single NBA game or average more than 40 and 50 points in a season. He also won seven scoring, eleven rebounding, nine field goal percentage titles and led the league in assists once. Chamberlain is the only player in NBA history to average at least 30 points and 20 rebounds per game in a season, a feat he accomplished seven times. He is also the only player to average at least 30 points and 20 rebounds per game over the entire course of his NBA career.

I'm not old enough to have been able to see Wilt play live. I've watched a bunch of highlights of a lot of old time players that people like to talk about (Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell, Elgin Baylor, etc.). Most of the time I watch players from that era's highlights, I think to myself "They don't look like they would be nearly as good in today's game". Not that they couldn't be great if they were brought up playing basketball today, just that they didn't look quite as athletic as players today and would struggle for a few different reasons.

Wilt is the one exception for me from that era. He looks twice as athletic than any big guy in the NBA today, and he looks like he would be dominant in any era. It amazes me every time I watch highlights of him.

Personally, Wilt is the greatest bb player I ever saw. Certainly the best center. He was absolutely unstoppable offensively when he was motivated. The NBA changed its rules to help defenses with Wilt. I believe it was lane width and 3 second rules? He was also the strongest big man ever easily, including Shaq. Athletically he was unbelievable. He was fast, jump out of the gym and smooth as glass. The man averaged 50 & 20 for a whole year. Today he seems to be overlooked and players such as Jabbar, Hakeem, Shaq, and Duncan rated higher by many... No way.. Wilt would abuse all these guys. Jabbar hated playing against Wilt even though he was much younger, all you had to do was watch Kareem's body language to see he wanted no part of Wilt physically.

I saw a story once about Wilt's height. H was taller than his listed height of 7'1". He never allowed his true height to be listed because he was embarrassed by his height. As a ruse to see how tall he really was a Philly newspaper made him a trophy 7'1" tall for him for some accomplishment and had pics made with him standing beside it. The pics show him to be more like 7'4". I have seem the pic and it looks legit.

Wilt is not given his due IMO due to The Celtics being so dominant during his prime. Wilt was 3x the all around player Russell was but Russell's team was much better. BTW I'm not knocking Russell at all.. In fact my all time team would have Wilt and Bill on the floor at the same time. Add Jordan, Bird and Magic ( Big O and Elgin Baylor as backups) and I'd bet big $$ on them against anyone you pick..

Wilt's biggest flaw was his FT shooting. He was terrible 50% or so I'd guess. Plus he occasionally played soft which really hurt his image.

The 30, 000 women is BS IMO. If he had bedded 2 gals a day every single day it would have taken him more than 40 years to screw 30,000. Doubt it..

Wilt was considerably bigger than WCS and much stronger. Plus a better athlete

Not in college (I remember since that was my era). But was he matured, he was a giant (since 7 footers were not dime a dozen like today).

I was just trying to give the young crowd an image. WCS was a freak athletic 7 footer. Wilt was "freakier" and definitely had better basketball skills.

These stories are many. My dads mom threw away all of his baseball cards from the 40's, 50's and 60's when he left for the war. People just didn't realize those Mantle and Maris rookies were gonna be worth the beach house they always wanted. Pops has some incredible stories of passing on some good stuff simply because he was ignorant at the time, and he was collecting when not many people were.

One of the best stories he has is about standing in the UK locker room and Sky Walker walked by him and threw away a pair of shoes because he busted part of one during the previous game. Dad asked him if he minded if he took them and Walker said "they're no good to play in but sure" lol. We still have them.

Chamberlain led the league in total assists 1967–68, with 702 assists (he did not lead the league in assists per game): he remains the only center to lead the league in assists.

Putting Willie Cauley Stein in the same conversation as Wilt Chamberlain is completely ridiculous. WCS couldn't carry Chamberlain's jock.
