Good discussion with many valid points. Successful teams put the pieces of the puzzle together and grow as the season goes on. I trust Jan and her staff to figure that out. There will be changes in PT and roles. Just revisit how the post situation evolved last season and also how Lucy stepped up. I don’t believe we are clicking, especially our perimeter game, like we will be later in the year. I’m excited to watch this team grow.

Dick Jensen averaged 3.1 per game in 69-70 as the starter at center and the team did pretty well.
THANK YOU for making my point. He also played with the famous 6 pack alongside John Johnson, Downtown Freddie Brown and Chad Calebria who as a group those three averaged 60 points a game. I believe thats the year Iowa averaged 100pts a game. So basically more a tangent to CC22's senior year with Monica, Kate and Mckenna to go along with Gabbie, and 6th woman of the year Hannah. They didn't need Gabbie to score. That is NOT the current team. We currently have a point guard who's not a score first guard for the first time in almost 15 years, and in flux on what perimeter players can add to the offense. What we do know is it most likely won't be Kylie. Someone, (or a few someones) will need to step into that void, ad they need minutes to get in the flow.

Yes.

That Iowa team averaged 98.7 points a game. I think they were at 100 a game in the Big Ten.
Five players - 3 forwards and 2 guards - basically scored all the points. All five shot better than 50% from the field.

John Johnson F 28.0 Pts - .569% FG %
Chad Calabria G 19.2 Pts - .548 FG %
Glenn Vidnovic F 17.3 Pts - 540 FG %
Fred Brown G 17.9 Pts - .500 FG %
Ben McGilmer F 10.3 Pts - .562 FG %

Without their token center, Dick Jensen, these five players above combined for 93 points a game, shot over 50% from the field, and averaged 81% from the freethrow line. An absolutely insane offense.

Jensen shot 36% from the field (horrible for a center) and below 50% from the freethrow line. Iowa didn't need a single point from him.

Thanks for the original comment. We're having a discussion. Not one of us thinks we're making decision for Jan or that we have any input whatsoever. I guess we should just do away with these forums?

It seems to me there are a few that know better than Jan.

Maybe, but you obviously don't get how you made my point either. It was fine having a guy who played a role on a starting 5 who could drop 80 points just with 3 or 4 guys, like the 69-70 Hawks or for that matter Clarks womens team. Thats not THIS Iowa womens team.

Feuerbach: pog today. That's gotta hurt.
???? Not at all. In fact if Kylie plays like that every game it would be FANTASTIC! I'm just a realist and we have 5 years of her play to go off. Just consider that she's had a few games like this before where she made 4 threes in a game and YET that type of occasional outlier game still leads to her being a career 28% three point shooter. Care to guess what some of the other games will look like if that stat holds up again as it has the other 4 years? I'd like nothing more then to have her have an all B1G caliber season. Truly. I just wouldn't be expecting those results on a regular basis.

So was that announced or just your opinion? Certainly Ava with 18pts and 16 boards would have to be in that converstion....
Hawkeye Radio pog.

Yeah, Feuerbach isn't going to have a lot of those games, but it doesn't help the argument that she shouldn't be on the court. Lots of disruptive plays today, and a calm experienced game in the 4th. Hard to stat what she brings. Seems a lot of the plays she makes go overlooked.

Would be great if Jensen had a player that didn't have limitations or flaws, but not really the case atm. Will get interesting to see how the minutes go once Wright and Rodriguez are back. Stremlow probably gets more time out there with Chit-Chat. ??

None of those plays show up in the box score. The coaches notice.

Chit Chat really needs to play against Rutgers to get the "rust off" before ISU.

Hope she is good to go.

It will be interesting no doubt. I'll just say this, and then comment no more on this, because I don't have a thing against Kylie. She's been and always will be a good Hawkeye. If Deals minutes fall off a lot when the others return we're going to be sorry later in the B1G and whatever tourney we get into. We already know Kylie, McCabe, and Hannah's ceiling. Theres no getting around that. We're just getting a glimpse on what Deal and ERods ceiling might be and they're at an entirely different level.

I agree with this but McCabe is playing pretty darn well, the best she ever has imo. Dangerous from 3, good passer, rarely turns it over, rebounding and defense has been very good. I like it when she's out there

Absolutely. Of the three she's the only one who's progressed the last two years. I don't think Kylie has, and Hannah is not better then she was 2 years ago either, since CC22 left. Hmmm...

Maybe when Chit Chat gets back, Hannah can run the floor and get a little better feed from the point.

Sure Kylie is a good defender, although I think somewhat overrated. Who did she guard in the last game, because their two scorers had pretty solid games.
Kylie was key in Iowa's wins over USC and Michigan last season (and other games) because of what she did defensively against JuJu Watkins and Olivia Olson.

The top two scorers for Fairfield were a combined 9-of-28 (32.1%) from the floor and 5-of-16 (31.3%) from three-point range.

You mean the game where Juju scored 28-29 points and like 20 in the 2Q? Was KF out in the 2Q? The way I remember it Juju just missed a bunch of looks she normally makes and then lit us up in the 2Q. I also thing Jan through a few junk defenses at her as well. Not sure I'd put all of our "success stopping her" (if you can call her getting her average, stopping) on one player.

JuJu was 1-of-6 in the first quarter with two turnovers, which allowed Iowa to build a lead that got as large as 23-4 minutes into the second quarter. She was 8-of-22 from the floor, 1-of-7 from three-point range and got ten of her 27 points at the free throw line, with just one of those ten makes coming from a Feuerbach foul.

She had 15 points in the second quarter. Seven of them at the free throw line and two off of a Guyton turnover just before the halftime buzzer.

Kylie's defense early in that game was critical for Iowa to build the early lead and they do not win if they don't build a 19-point lead in the first half. It seems like you are purposely overlooking some numbers here.

Not really. Yes she was 1-6 in the first and 1-7 from three. I'll have to watch the game again (I still have it on record) but from what I remember she got many of the shots she wants, she just didn't make them. Clark had games like that as well. Not that she got shut down, she just had a poor shooting night. Look its clear that some folks want Kylie to play 30 minutes a game because she's been here 5 years and she plays defense. Super. My concern from the jump has been the more she plays the less Deal plays, and its as clear as the nose on your face that she is coming on fast, and will continue to, IF she plays more then just a few short spurts. She's our best post feeder, (easily), and as you see her progress she is smooth. Watch those two mid range jumpers she made last game. We don't have another player on the roster, that can do that pull up 10-14 shot, drive to the hole, shoot threes, and pass the ball when and where it needs to go. Her defense has also improved game to game.

Agree on Deal getting more minutes. They don't all have to come from Fuerbach, however. Mc Cabe is a wonderful shooter, at times, but could lose some minutes on occasion. Wright could give up some minutes to Deal/Stremlow combo at the one and two spots as well.

Absolutely agree. Deal could play 1,2 or 3. The only issue there is when CCW returns thats also where you slot Stremlow for minutes, and then you hopefully have ERod returning. This is where it gets tricky. Deal and ERod are our most versitile perimeter players, and Stremlow is a Jill of all trades. All will need floor time to grow. I see Erod as similar to Ava in that she has great potential, but shes raw. The difference being that Ava came in last year as freshman and she knew she had two seniors ahead of her, plus Stuelke. Erod started as a freshman and put up pretty solid numbers. I wonder how her transition is going mentally. She's the one girl whether on the floor or on the bench. I just don't see much joy coming from her. Some people are hard to read though.

I’ve said it 100 times it would be amazing if we could get a consistent six or seven points a game from her

Unfortunately, she’s really struggled against good competition

Jensen was a real stud on that team. The guy was a force in the inside defensively and allowed Iowa wings to get a lot of rebounds and get the ball to the sidelines unobstructed.,Iowa scored a lot of points that year because they ran the floor better than anyone else . Lay-up’s and wide open jumpers were their daily bread… and it always started because of a clean rebound outlet pass that usually resulted because of Jensen holding his own on the inside. Drake may have had “the Flamingo from Maringo” in ‘69 but the Hawks had the “Marshall from Madrid” in 70! His play resulted in a lot of Hawkeye points.
