This was my take from the get go. I'm positive in her entire career she's never been in and out of the lineup like that while adjusting to a new system, team mates etc..And yet you get posters here saying she was over rated. You get "rated" based on what you've already done, and she excelled in high school, and AAU. Heck someone actually posted that maybe the level of competition wasn't that good in high school. I mean the idiocy of some of these posts. Like playing in the large class in California (against many of the very top private schools like next years 5 star MW), would be a lower level than girls in Iowa, Wisconsin where we get most of our players. Ridiculous....

Addie needs more of Kylies minutes when Chit Chat gets back...3 guard offense (Mccabe, Deal, Stremlow Chit Chat 3 of 4 on the court), with 2 low posts. Kylies defense, is more intensity than anything. Its good but her offense is just dreadful at this point. I still think back to that tourney game a few years ago against Virginia Tech when she scored like 8 points in a row when we needed it, and think where is that at?
Totally disagree. Kylie is our lockdown defender. Points are a bonus from her. Different players have critical roles and her's is stopping the opposition's best shooters.
Just watched the full game on youtube, and said the same thing. We'll need Deal in longer spurts, (don't expect her to play 31 minutes), but thats where I'd take the minutes as well.
Sorry, but I'm not sure she's "locking anyone down" right now either. I see her getting blown by some players as well, or getting called for the foul. Would have to rewatch, but who was she guarding yesterday, because their two main scorers scored most of the points. I didn't see either getting "locked down". It seems obvious that Deal needs to play more minutes in longer stretches. She has WAY more overall game. Where do you want the minutes to come from when CCW returns?
I think it's safe to say that Deal will be getting more of Kylie's minutes going forward.
We may look back on this game and say that's where it all came together for her. She looked comfortable, was taking what the defense gave her and was looking to get more players involved. Said it earlier when the game slowed down a bit she is going to make us Hawk fans very happy.

Jensen knows Feuerbach’s value - KF will continue to start and play major minutes so long as she wears an Iowa uniform and stays healthy.
Deal played many many consecutive minutes in HS and the transition has been different with 3 minutes here and 3 minutes there etc. Past game shows how she got back to "mental" extended minutes. Not sure where extended minutes are going to come from but if her improvement continues I could see her playing at one and two getting extra consecutive minutes subbing for KF and Chit-Chat. Hope that makes sense.
I agree that Kylie will most likely continue to start. I just think if Deal continues to move forward it will be harder to take her off the floor. Some of those minutes will come from Kylie. Now the plus being Deal can fit anywhere from the 1-2-3 spots, so theres flexibilty there. Also its not just that Deal could very well be one of the top scorers on this team, but I think she's close to the team lead in assists even in her limited minutes, averaging 14.5 minutes/gm before the last one where she played 31 minutes. She will make other players around her better and increase the offensive output. Kylie does neither of those things.
Exactly right. Her ability to play the 1, 2, or 3 on this team will give Jan flexibility to give her more run..
I'm hoping you're right. When she doesnt rush her shot it s money. Big10 is another level (obviously) I have no doubt the game will slow for her it's just a matter of time.
I think some underestimate the transition from HS to college for some athletes. You go from playing in a HS gym in front of a thousand fans to an area with 15,000. You go from being the best player on the court to an inexperienced freshman. You're heralded as a HS superstar with elevated expectations to fans questioning your ability on social media. Not to mention sleeping in your own bed at Mom's house and taking easy senior classes to a dorm with a roommate and college classwork.

She should be on the floor. This level of talent is not accidental. She needs to integrate and work up to speed. Jan was wrong not to work in Heiden last year. It was obvious Ava was on a higher level of talent and we paid for it. A McDonalds All American, 5 star recruit is not bench material. Addy may adjustment time, but that time needs to be under fire. It was embarrassing when her introduction to the Hawkeye world was a 4th substitution in a preseason game. I wonder if it effected other recruit's decisions.
You make some very good points and I’m a huge Deal fan wanting to see her on the court. However….that is not as easy of a decision for a coach as many of us think it should be. I’m a total believer in the power of team culture and chemistry. Many have talked about those points being overrated but I believe for a team to reach its potential it is most important. Jan needed to take that into consideration. Also coaches play players they trust. I don’t know where Addie was as far as a trust level but I believe we agree she will earn it, as all players should. My humble prediction is Addie will be a Hawkeye star.

Seems to be coming along just fine the way Jensen has integrated minutes. If she continues to progress things only go forward. Hopefully Deal's confidence continues to grow in December.

JJ will have some interesting decisions to make going forward. Both Taylor S and Addie D seem to be ready for extended amounts of playing time. Another factor to consider as well is E Rod, she has a unique skill set which can be of value to this team. If she is going to integrate into the system she will need playing time as well. it is likely the game time situation and the opponent will determine how the minutes 1-2-3 will be utilized by JJ and how the different combinations of players fit together.
If Feuerbach is assigned to the best offensive player on the opposing team and holds her to 0 points, I'd say 95% of the time Iowa wins the game, regardless how many points KF scores.
You were doing great until the last part. There is no excuse for Heiden not playing more last year. She was clearly the most talented big and would've been even further ahead at years end had she been given the proper minutes. Can't believe some can't see how clear that one was.
It would have translated into more wins. Addison was a 1/2 step behind college-ready. Fine. But ultra talented players acclimate quickly, which separates them from typical. Jensen is an expert with decades of experience and I'm an old fart with decades of experience watching coaches making good and terrible judgements. Coaches get fired, get raises and/or move based on decisions and judgements.

Northwestern (1/28) - 0 minutes
USC (2/2) - 0 minutes
Minnesota (2/6) - 0 minutes
Nebraska (2/10) - 13 minutes
Rutgers (2/13) - 2 minutes
Ohio State (2/17) - 0 minutes
UCLA (2/23) - 0 minutes

Obviously since she's not one of our top scorers that would be a winning scenario for us, but of course she's not holding anyone to O. Even the last game the two leading scorers for Western scored most of their points and I imagine she was on one of them when she was in.
Agreed. We'll never know how much faster "the light would have come on" for her". That close loss to UCLA is one example where I'd have loved to see her thrown in and gotten her feet wet. She never left the bench in that one. Water under the bridge at this point
KF is not averaging 6ppg so far this year (4.1 ppg) but her ppg last year were a very similar to Gabbie Marshall’s senior season (GM 6.1 ppg vs KF 6.7 ppg) as well as shooting % (GM 37.6% vs KF 38.0%).
Both these players - Gabbie Marshall and Kylie Feuerbach - were/are designated role players, to wit; defensive specialists primarily & 3rd or 4th scoring option on offense.
Marshall went through a couple severe shooting slumps in 23-24; quite a few fans here were calling for reduced minutes.
Feuerbach is currently getting the Gabbie Marshall treatment.
Kylie is not shooting well right now. I think she will break out soon. But Jensen, like Bluder, understood the team value of keeping these highly experienced defensive-minded players on the court.
BUT, BUT Gabbie always seemed to come up big in March and in really big games with clutch shots, and theres one other REALLY big difference your glossing over. Gabbie wasn't really needed to score on an offense with the games greatest scorer CC22 who could get you 30-40 points damn near any night, Monica in the post, a solid shooting 3/4 in Warnock and Kate Martin. Now we have Kylie playing a starters role, (as a non scoring guard) on a team where we don't have an established score first point guard for the first time in more then a decade, (a point Jan herself talked about), and our 2 guard in McCabe who can get hers "sometimes", but can't create for herself on offense. Surely you can see the difference in having a scorer at that spot as compared to the teams Gabbie played on. We didn't need her to score, but we need someone at that 2/3 spot now, and thats going to have to come from a Deal/Stremlow/ERod combo. Have Kylie play major minutes makes that problematic, and there is NO comparison to the offense when Gabby played.
That was a lengthy reply without a single mention of defense ..which was my main point. It is the primary reason she is in the line- up. Iowa fans are conditioned to almost completely disregard defense.
Lolol. Okay obviously you have no intention of discussing the issue. Sure Kylie is a good defender, although I think somewhat overrated. Who did she guard in the last game, because their two scorers had pretty solid games. My point is even as a good defender she is a liability in the other end of the floor because this is not a team with Sam Logic, Kathleen Doyle, Lucy olsen and certainly not CC22 who by herself could handle the perimeter scoring. Without the contributions of Deal/Stremlow/ERod playing more then spot minutes this team has a giant hole when it comes to perimeter scoring. Kylie playing 30 minutes is an issue, plain and simple because it keeps those who can contribute to way less minutes. If your going to play Kylie that many minutes and have almost zero offensive production from a key position, then you almost have to bench McCabe because she can't create offense by herself either. We can't rely on Ava and Hannah to score so many points when we start playing better and bigger conference teams. We will have to have a perimeter presense, both to score and to loosen the lane for Ava. Otherwise we better be REALLY good on defense for all those 56-49 games were going to try winning.
And I certainly did discuss defense. Your trying to relate Kylie to playing Gabbie's role. I merely pointed out thats like comparing apples to watermelons because we didn't need scoring from Gabbie, because we could create 80 -85 points easily without her. Thats not the case with this team if our 2/3 positions are covered by Kylie and McCabe.
Her senior year, Gabbie hit 35.7% from three point range. Last year Kylie hit 22% of her 3s; this year so far only 17%.
I like Kylie's game. But, she's not much of a threat from 3-point range. This allows opponents to drop down to double the post. We have great post players this year, we need solid outside shooting to keep the flys away from Ava, Hannah, and Layla.

I think if you looked at Gabbie's numbers in march there evn better then that. Thats why they called her March Marshall. From just befoe the B1G tourney through the NCAA I think she was over 50%

Offensively, Kylie is at the same level as a 6th year senior as she was as a transfer before the ACL tear.
