Wish fans would dial down the Addie Deal expectations/pressure. I'm an Addie Deal fan. She is a highly-skilled, high IQ player with good size who will grow into her role and have a good career. She is not overly athletic. By coming to Iowa, she has already contributed significantly, making it easier for Woliczko to follow her the next year. Still, there are some things about Deal's ranking/background/experience that suggest she might be over ranked.

Her age, turning 20 before playing a college game, meant that she had a different experience than most of the other top ranked players in her class. She was too old to ever tryout for a USA Basketball team with her class (and apparently wasn't asked to try out with earlier classes). USA Basketball trials and related international experience for those selected go along way toward identifying the really top players. Woliczko's extensive USA Basketball and international experience is comforting in this regard. Of last year's 24 McDonald's AAs, 19 have USA Basketball trials experience, 3 played FIBA for either Australia or Canada, and only 2 have no international or USA Basketball trials experience, of which Addie Deal is one. When Deal was compared against the other McDonald's AAs, after practice, scrimmage and the McDonald's AA game, ESPN moved Deal down to the lowest ranked player who played in this year's McDonald's AA game (1 player was injured and did not play).

Rankings wise, Brandon Clay has been Deal's biggest supporter. He is affiliated with both Prospects Nation and 247, both of whom rank Deal quite highly. He is a McDonald's AA voter. He has also been one of Addie Deal's basketball trainers. People periodically complain about his potential conflict of interest, but he is far from the only person in the McDonald's AA selection process with a conflict of interest. Still, if Shane Laflin from ESPN had ranked Deal as high as Clay after McDonald's AA week, that would have been a good sign for Deal's freshman year prospects (but no guarantee, see Emilee Skinner at Duke). Alternatively, if Deal had always been ranked as a fringe top 25 player, the pressure and expectations might have been more reasonable and appropriate. Her age might have contributed to her earlier high ranking, but the benefits of being older compared to your peers diminish over time.

Avg for five-star Freshmen above Deal:

Oklahoma’s - 30 minutes and 17 points.

USC’s - 31 minutes, 16 points/game

S. Carolina’s - 17 minutes, 8 points

Texas - 24 minutes, 13 points

Tennessee - 17 minutes, 5 points

LSU - 11 minutes, 3 points

Stanford - 27 minutes, 10 points

Just sayin….Deal needs to be on the floor so she can get experience and become a superstar sooner, not later.

How is Emilee Skinner doing at Duke?

Well, if YOUR’E trying to prove something then by all means provide statistics to support what you are saying. Common sense, Miguel.

The point you seem to be trying to make is that Jan is underutilizing her 5-star freshman. You can look at that from 2 perspectives to see if that is true:

The 1st perspective comparing to other 5 star freshmen across the country. Let's actually look at that analytically. My source for this is ESPN recruiting rankings and data. They had 31 players listed as 5-stars in the 2025 high school class. Here they all are:

The mean number of minutes per game played for those 31 players so far in the season is 17.04, with a standard deviation of 8.42. If you take out the 3 players who are injured, the average goes to 18.86 with a standard deviation of 6.56. Addie has played 14.4 minutes, which falls well within one standard deviation of the mean, so statistically the number of minutes she is receiving is not an outlier among all 5 star recruits.

The 2nd perspective is a question of how deserving is she of minutes compared to her own teammates at her positions. Is Jan unfairly giving other players minutes that should be going to Addie? There are 6 players that play at the 1-3 guard positions, not including the ones who only come in for garbage time. Here's how they match up so far:

Her minutes are on par with those of Kylie, Emely, and Taylor S. Has she shown anything statistically in the minutes she does get to demonstrate she should be getting more than these other players? She's 4th in points per minute, 2nd in assists per minute (not bad), 4th in rebounds/minute, 6th in steals+blocks per minute, and 1st(last?) in turnovers per minute. Based on these numbers, she's holding her own without a major drop off when she comes in, but she hasn't done anything to stand out to argue she should be getting more minutes at the expense of one of these teammates.

There is an enormous amount of statistical data, across multiple years, available at HerHoopStats and Basketball reference that refutes your point about what one should EXPECT from a first year player with Addie's excellent profile.

I sent you a link with great analysis showing what the average first year player with her ratings has done. The average, or expected value, is not the same as what one could hope for in a best case scenario.

Instead you cherry pick a few of the names from this year that are rated higher than her and outperforming her. That's not the way statistics shows anything. People could easily similarly grab a few names here and there performing worse than her.

The people complaining about Deal sitting opposed to Chit Chat, haven't watched a game this year. Checking a box score doesn't provide much information on how a game actually played out. Players should have earn time and not just go to the higher rated player. I'm guessing they know that and are trolling.

IMO, the team needs Chit Chat to get healthy and back on the floor or they're going to struggle against these better teams coming up.

Watch the games. Chit Chat is much quicker and pushes the ball well at pg. Deal is just a bigger body type and slower. I see Deal in a more ERod role than pg. And please, Deal did not rank herself a 5 star and #9 player, some guy sitting on a couch did that. Why don't people tear into these ranking services and let the kid find her place on the team.

This x10! We all know Addie is talented. She has gotten opportunities to contribute.

Her pts/minute is below everyone but Taylor and Kylie. Kylie plays excellent D. Taylor has proven to be a 3-pt threat.
Her Reb/min is below everyone but Chit Chat and Kylie. Again Kylie plays b/c of her D. We can all see how Wright has contributed so far.
Her TOs/min are higher than everyone

She's the only Frosh on the list provided.

To me she has played like a Freshman in their first games in the P2 program. I have seen her take one shot where it seemed she didn't hesitate or think. Just stepped up and shot. A 3-pt that she swished. Addie will be just fine sooner than we know. She has to get comfortable, feel like she belongs on the court and play like an experienced vet. That will come in her own time.

The issue, I think, is JJ doesn't trust her at crunch time or in tight games.

So, when she does get in she shoots too quickly, and after she misses, hesitates in subsequent opportunities.

Not to be snarky, but what were her supposed strengths coming in???
What I see is a girl that's playing a game that is too fast for her. Doesn't appear terribly athletic.

We've all been spoiled by CC.
Traditionally the game needs to slow down for them. Clark was an anomoly that was ready day 1. If you expect every elite recruit to follow that plan you will be disappointed.
Deal will be fine by middle/end of season and when it finally clicks then look out. She is going to make Iowa fans very happy very soon.

And Jan is right. Deal is still not reliable at crunch time or in tight games. Rodriguez isn't either. But they'll get there. They need some time and patience to develop. But today, just like Jan, almost nobody would trust them in the game's decisive moments.

She is a true frosh. Iowa is a high-level team playing other tough teams. It is not a cake walk for her. She needs to develop as a player. It would not be easier for her at UConn, South Carolina, ND etc.

Heiden didn’t play as a much as people wanted last year either. Deal has struggled which is expected for a true freshman. I’m sure Heinden is telling her to just keep at it and her time will come. Just have to hope with this NIL crap other teams don’t throw money her way but that’s the case with any player now I suppose.

I will say some players have minutes played per game built into why they will play for a school. Taylor McCabe had a “start me or I’ll transfer” deal with the coach’s. Players now can have more of a say in playing time than in the past with the portal and NIL. It’s like they have an agent (usually parents) who have power.

Yes it is expecting too much. "Hope" is different than "expect". And she wasn't generally considered 9th in the country. I think she is going to be just fine, but a few complaining this early in the season about a freshman are exactly why "Come to Iowa where there are so many fans!" isn't always resonating with recruits.

You'd do well to look at the last 10 years of data on top 25 recruits and how they perform their freshman year.

Someone on reddit did a deep dive on the data from HerHoopStats on what exactly would make sense as a range of what to expect from Addie given her rating (96), height, position, etc.

It is interesting but a lot to get through--so I'll leave you with their finding on what an **average** freshman season would look like for a player like Addie. You can search their post for the word average if you want to see their entire table.

I am late to this conversation, but I am so happy to see this post. Data is so important for keeping perspective. We all have CC in our heads, but that is not a fair comparison.

She doesn't have any strengths, she just got lucky a LOT and basketball ranking people liked her cause she's into poetry off the court.
Not everyone is comparing her to CC as you seem to suggest.

But I might mention Prince, from Nebraska, that came in last year less hyped at a similar position.
She didn't seem to have these struggles.

Explain how I'm wrong.

Sounds like you should just cheer for Nebraska then. All of your perceived Addie Deal issues disappear just like that. Problem solved, I'm a lot like Dr. Phil in that way.

I would agree somewhat with Anon. I have watched Nebraska and did what I should not do—”compare”. I also watched my DVR from one of last years Hawks/Huskers games. Prince certainly was, and is, ahead of Addie. I still am a huge believer in Addie. She will grow in the college game. She is a different type of player than Prince, who seems to be quicker and more athletic. I feel Addie’s game is more controlled and cerebral. That will take more time to develop. Let’s all give her some grace and enjoy the process of Addie’s growth.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one - Spock. She will be just fine but you don't put her development above the others.
I think you also avoid having her “wait her turn” because others are experienced.

Iowa has too little firepower at the 1, 2, and 3 positions. I’d play her a lot because maximizing her talent will raise Iowas ceiling this year.

Sounds like you should just cheer for Nebraska then. All of your perceived Addie Deal issues disappear just like that. Problem solved, I'm a lot like Dr. Phil in that way.
Ah, the old fallback "cheer for someone else".

LOL
I do agree she will eventually improve in her decision making.
My eyes tell me she's a little slow on her feet and will struggle with more athletic defenders.
Stremlow is the backup to Chit Chat when she returns.
Given the schedule and Chit Chat's injury...looks like Deal has three games to make progress or she's not making the 8 player rotation in meaningful games.
