Yes on the first part. People seem to want more free **** from the government, which will lead to expanded entitlements, which is the main reason we’re in debt.

To be fair, the Dems have campaigned on tax increases (but certainly not spending cuts). Biden and Harris both campaigned on raising taxes on those making more than $400K. And there is constant talk about taxing “billionaires,” although the left seems confused because the actual tax increase proposals target hardworking families who already pay a lot in taxes.

This logic is odd to me- I'm glad you're doing fine. If someone critiques an aspect of society, or critiques a level of unfairness in society, does it imply they "aren't doing fine?" I think Boomers suck, and I think their pollannyish worldview had grievous repercussions on society. Hell, the majority of them voted for Trump. Clearly they have issues.

But also, I love my parents and am thankful for them. Boomers (as @scotchtiger mentioned) are hands on, physically present, and very consistent. They have alot of good qualities.

With the price of land, it's difficult to build a small house because the overall cost will be higher per sqft (when including the lot). I think you're misguided on the ordinances. In my area the lots are bigger because the ordinance is about undeveloped land. I don't know the exact number, but it's something like the house can't consume more than 40% of the lot. So as the houses got bigger, the lots had to get bigger. I think we probably all can agree we don't want to live in a neighborhood where the homes have no yards because the house is too big for the lot.

smaller lots (with corresponding smaller houses) are cheaper - more affordable. but smaller lots also mean more people, more density. when a development is proposed that includes relatively dense development (or a zoning ordinance is proposed to be amended that would allow for more dense development), it is almost always met with substantial opposition from the current residents of the area...even when the proposed development looks virtually identical to the one those people are currently living in.

that public opposition is largely comprised of older people (or "boomers"). i'd admit it's probably unfair to say all the public opposition is from that age group...or that most of that age group agrees with them. but if you have experience with these kinds of meetings, it is a pattern that is hard not to notice.

I have to disagree about expectations. I don't think the 1950's homes are out of reach for young adults, unless they're in a really nice neighborhood. I have a friend who's married son just bought a house. I don't think he makes much money, maybe his wife does, but they max'd out what they could buy so they could get a house with a pond, with hardwood floors, with nice countertops, with 4 bathrooms. They have no kids (yet). I feel they had the expectation that they would have a nicer house than the parents. They certainly weren't going to have a smaller house.

If kids don't have the money, then they should go to a community college for 2 year and then transfer. But I feel the kids have an expectation that they should be able to go to a 4 year college.

And two year colleges are free in SC thanks to the Education Lottery.

Depending on where you're at in the country, and the coverage limit (better description than my "undeveloped land"), it isn't really that hard to max out a lot. I have a ~1/3 of an acre and my lot is max'd out. From what I've experienced, a 1/4 acre lot means about 2,000sf home, a 1/3 acre lot is about 3,000sf. In the early 90's builders were building between 1,500 and 2,500 sf homes. Then in the late 90's there was a switch 2,000 - 3,500 sf homes. I'm really only talking about builders who were building a full subdivision. People buying individual lots were building bigger houses (most of the time).
