You definitely have the Cinci game in 1977 wrong. We blew them out. I think Cinci came into the game ranked #5 at the time.

We won that Cincinnati game in 1977.
In 1978, we lost to North Carolina. Also lost in the semi of the NIT to Texas and beat Georgetown in the 3rd place game.

It was the 1978 ECAC Holiday Festival, not 1979. I broadcasted those games for WRSU my senior year with Dave Siegelman, back when my eyesight was much better, which was required since they stuck us up where the green seats met the blue seats! We also beat SHU in February of 1979 at the Garden.

Pretty sure that the following year, 1980, I broadcast the game against LIU from the Garden. But we had Marv's seats right above the court. We lost in OT. Sports-reference.com shows it as being at the RAC, but I am 100% sure it was MSG. Can't recall who my broadcast partner was, though. :-(

I call that game the best beating we ever gave to a ranked team..... a cincy fan sitting next to me wanted to bet $50 on the game, I said nothing..... after it started he just shook his head at what Bailey could do

I actually was pissed off that they cut the final margin down to 19, the team backed off a bit, since we were beating them in the mid 20's most of the game

They lost twice in opening round of NIT in early 70s, - once to Minnesota w Dave Windfield. Also to Utah, coached by Ex coach Bill Foster and future coach Bob Wenzel (assistant). In the old Garden, Rutgers also was 3-1 in the 67 NIT w Lloyd & Valvano. I was too young for those games, but think I was at the loss to Tennessee in the ‘69 NIT

Yes, it was Marshall for the 3rd place finish in the NIT.

Earlier that season - the Lloyd-Valvano backcourt senior season - RU knocked off Missouri in Dec., 1966, which I think was its first appearance in the Garden since that NYU game many years earlier. Later that season, in Feb. 1967, RU topped NYU (who was still using the Garden as its home court) in a game in which Bobby Lloyd, the nation's leading free throw shooter, went 19 for 19 from the line. I've never seen anyone do that since. Lloyd went on to set an NIT scoring record of 129 (?) points over the four games you noted, a record that stood for many years, even after the tournament expanded and some teams played more than 4 games. I don't know if/when the record fell but perhaps someone here (Source?) might know.

RU also defeated NYU in 1969 on its way to the 1968-69 season which ended with the loss to Tennessee noted above.

Once the RAC opened in 1977, RU began to schedule fewer and fewer games at the Garden, and after the original bball-only BE began without us, we played fewer games still in the world's most famous arena.

Two other games that come to mind as I write this were opening round NIT losses to Minnesota (1971 or 72?) and to Utah (1973 or 74?). Also, in the 1974-75 season - which would be RU's first ever NCAA bid, RU defeated Manhattan and St. John's there during the regular season and St. Peter's and St. John's there in the ECAC metro tournament to determine who went got the NCAA bid from the ECAC metro region.

If anyone tallies all this up, it looks as though RU has a pretty good record there overall.

Definitely greatest game I ever saw. I believe we scored 7 points in the last 6 seconds of regulation to tie the game.
Missed that cause my Parents invited me and my friend to go with them to Ft. Lauderdale and I was 19, legal to drink, it was spring break, and they gave me free use of the brand new black caddy to cruise the strip.
No idea why they choose FL that week. But it worked for me.

Thanks - great stuff! I was a senior in HS and a bit of an RU fan since the Final Four team, since I got to see them play on PBS sometimes, which is when I first heard of Rutgers and that they were the State U. of NJ. Hadn't decided to go to RU until that spring. I only heard about this game years later, but never saw this footage.

I was at this game but had no idea it was recorded. So thanks for that!

If anyone is interested is seeing what the Scarlet Knight looked like in 1978, go to the 1:30:03 mark and freeze frame. The Knight goes in and out of the shot from about 1:28:00 until the end.

The 1966 Missouri game with Valvano/Lloyd
at the Garden may have been the first game that put Rutgers basketball on the map. It was a great atmosphere.

Colonel,

Thanks for posting the video. Have not seen that in a bunch of years. Have said it many times before, but it was the best and most memorable game I was ever associated with at Rutgers.

Don't even remember what we got as a gift at the end of the game.(I still do have my 1978 NIT watch). I am getting handed my gift at 1:31:21 of the video.(dressed in my brown jacket with the beard and only about 60 lbs. less!). Where have all the years gone??

Best of Luck,

Yes, Marshall, whose leading scorer was George Stone. I think Lloyd dropped about 40 on them—to cap his record-setting 129 for the 4 games of the tournament.

Getting back to greatest Rutgers games
At Garden - I may not have been at Ohio St. game, but the 1976 game vs St Johns in ECAC NCAA qualifier is my favorite . Both teams will make tournament, but winner plays Princeton in Providence, the loser Indiana in South Bend. Phil Sellers has 3 straight “gimme the ball” buckets to seal 79-77 win!
Barn win - easily last regular season game that year to clinch undefeated season vs St Bonaventure. Rutgers was DOWN 7 with 3 min to go.RU wins 85-80.
Road win - involves Kobe’s dad actually. 1974-75 season He starred for Lasalle. Ranked #14 Nationally. Rutgers down 15 with ten minutes to go. Rutgers goes on a tear with the super press, Dabney on fire. Rutgers wins by 14. Best 10 minutes I have seen Rutgers play, ever!

The festival championship trophy lifted by the team (1:32 mark) was put up for bid at a Court Club auction a few years back. @RUClassof67 was the winning bidder!

This is just going off the data in sports-reference.com, which unfortunately lists no arena for the Rutgers vs. Purdue game in 1975-76. Across all the games from 1950 to present, there are 54 games where no arena is listed, and I'm sure a handful of those were at MSG. In the 1975-76 season, there are six neutral site games that have no arena listed (Purdue, Penn, Citadel, GTech, American, and LIU).

The Purdue loss listed is the one from 2018 when we lost to Purdue in the B1G Tournament. So, including that game in 1975, our record vs. Purdue at MSG would be (1-1).

Edit: Just looked at the years, and it looks like the data from the 70s-80s has the most holes. There's only 1 missing arena from 1996-present, 7 from 1990-1995, 24 in the 1980s, 21 in the 1970s, 9 in the 1960s, and 1 in the 1950s.

Ahhh - 1967 NIT - our first post-season tourney - such great memories! I remember leaving a game at the Garden and heading back to the Barn to await the opening of the Ticket Office the next day at 8AM. Spent the entire night playing basketball on the Barn floor.
