What a waste......

While New York has weathered the brunt of coronavirus infections and deaths, the state’s apparent hoarding of medical supplies, and the millions spent on equipment that never arrived, as well as unused hospitals and beds, have some questioning what went wrong.

Early to mid-March projections of the spread of COVID-19 had the state scrambling to bolster its hospital bed capacity to more than double its 53,000 maximum status-quo.
In addition to a bevy of state orders, Gov. Andrew Cuomo made desperate overtures to the federal government to step in. In response, and in record time, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers scrambled to erect at least four field hospitals, and the Navy deployed its USNS Comfort hospital ship to Manhattan.

However, those efforts – and the many millions of dollars spent on them – have largely been deemed a waste, even as New York has battled a soaring a death toll and is maintaining stay-at-home orders.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is in the process of shuttering the much-touted, 2,500-bed Javits Center – having treated only around 1,000 patients over the course of more than a month – The Associated Press reported.

On Thursday, the heralded Navy ship – which was equipped with 1,000 beds and intended to take the burden off other hospitals and treat non-coronavirus patients before finally taking on a handful of those with the infection – sailed away, barely used.

The three additional field hospitals Albany spent many millions on erecting in late March are yet to close, despite treating few, and are standing idle in case there is a second wave of the disease.

Construction firms earned $136 million to quickly erect the Stony Brook field hospital – paid for from the Army Corps of Engineers budget.
Another $116.5 million was spent to spring to life a field facility on the Old Westbury campus, complete with top-notch features including hospital-grade welded linoleum floors, multiple layers of insulation, electricity, telephone infrastructure, plumbing, Wi-Fi, showers, bathrooms, and staff common areas.

In April, coronavirus patients at a Brooklyn nursing home were denied admission to both of the medical facilities established in New York to handle victims of the pandemic even though beds were mostly empty. The snub, as highlighted by the New York Post, came weeks after New York health officials were warned by the nursing home operator – where 55 people have died – that there was a grave concern, and requesting patients be transferred to the temporary facilities.

With a bulging ventilator stack, Cuomo has directed the National Guard to remove the unused, life-saving machines from medical facilities and reallocate or return them to other states.

New York also spent $69 million on ventilators that never arrived. Cuomo recently purchased 1,450 ventilators — at three times the retail price. Only the devices are yet to arrive, and Cuomo stated Friday that they are attempting to get their money back.

Did you see the part about "early to mid March projections"? requests were made on those projections. Just imagine the waste and fraud at the federal level, can't wait to hear about that. Did you hear about the millions in loans handed out and then the fed is asking for the money back from some companies? It's no wonder Trump had the IG fired who would have oversaw the first stimulus authorization. I see your source is incredulous at "three times the retail price". It's a shame that states were bidding against each other and the Fed gov't. Who allowed that sorry situation to occur? Too bad there wasn't better leadership from Trump's admin but Donnie accepts no responsibility. We need a full accounting of all aspects of the Fed response when this is over. I'm sure Nancy is curious. Solid thread.

I'll accept the projections....and I'll even give Cuomo a pass....I think he did what he felt was best given the info he had at the time.
I'll also will do the same for President Trump with his early down playing and optimism.
Both Trump and Cuomo rely/relied on the "experts" for guidance.

I stated in another thread that the left would start to blame Trump for over reacting to this...basically doing a 180 from from the earlier bashing. I thought it would take a couple of months for them to pivot...I was wrong. Moe's talking points turned on a dime...just like an illegal alien Moe-ing a yard with a zero turn tractor....

Actually you weren't wrong. You just probably never figured on them doing a "figure 8" of Trump going from being a "Xenophobe" on this for first reacting back in January, to him being too slow to react, or not doing enough, or caring enough to do anything, to him trying to control everything, to him now "overreacting" to it so much that lives were needlessly lost along with jobs and money spent that didn't have to be once he threw millions of Americans out of work all by himself for no reason!

I swear the only thing he hasn't been accused of is creating the virus in a Chinese biology lab! I suspect that one isn't far behind though. [eyeroll]

No, the waste was shutting down everything rather than protecting the old and weak of society. We did everything about this wrong.
If they left everything open and everyone got sick, more deaths, you all would be raising hell. You're lobbying for more death, you've made your choice.

I'm lobbying for herd immunity. Everyone will be exposed. We are taking the longest route to get there.

Imagine if NYC had left everything open. We did the best we could to keep our hospitals from being overrun and we failed in some instances. Survival of the fittest, got it.

To be clear here. Moe is now suggesting that Trump be held accountable for his quick and overwhelming response to the virus.

The measures taken in April, even though it was late but forget that at the moment, was based on worst case scenarios. Thank god worst case didn't happen and mitigation measures were effective in keeping deaths to the levels we reached before a leveling off. The virus is still active but most states are in a better shape on May 2nd versus April 2nd. Being prepared is not a waste in any form. It is the right action.

I'm not opposing handing out money just pointing out that they're incompetent (and corrupt?) when doing so, see the article.

Just to be clear......I have NO problem with what Cuomo had done at the time and given the info he was provided by his and many other experts.
In hindsight ......there was a tremendous waste in resources.
Moe gives no such pass to Trump.

Imagine if NYC had left everything open. We did the best we could to keep our hospitals from being overrun and we failed in some instances.

None were ever overrun. Jarvis and the Comfort were barely utilized.

Survival of the fittest, got it.

That's a lie, that's not what I said.

Imagine had we taken light precautionary steps for the general public, but protected the sick and elderly. The exact opposite of to scare everyone and send the infected back to our most vulnerable.

I have to give credit where credit is due. MoeRon has been consistently stupid in vigorously defending snowflake Cuomo, who peed down his leg and demanded more ventilators and hospital beds than New Your would ever need. MoeRon's lame excuse: A model, which MoeRon refuses to share with us, supports Cuomo sheer panic and tantrums. Bravo, MoeRon: You've been consistent...in your stupidity.

Yes, early on NY was having a hard time and Cuomo was talking about it daily. This shows what he was warning about was true. That isn't the discussion point. The country was too late in preparing for the onslaught due to reasons that you continue to deny. Now you want to blame the state and those that were trying. Look at the entire picture for the entire story. You won't though.
