That was definitely a nightmare. Very dark times for our program. Then cal, the legend of the east came in and saved us

I remember when Tubby offered Morikyno Williams. He was playing in the DC area so I looked him up. He wasn't even mentioned in the lists of local players in Northern Virginia that went 30 players deep. Then I saw him play, and knew why.

Worse was Adam Williams. As I recall he basically offered himself, and Tubby just went along with it, though he was basically an average player.

No offense op but you got give credit where it's due. You must of forgotten about the biggest recruit bcg had. The legend Matt pilgrim. You also left off hunter McClintock. Hampton would of made a final four with him at the very least and we would have had two more titles. Greatest player since Shawn kemp to never step foot on the floor at uk

I remember the time when posters on this board would say that "UK didn't need 5 stars to win" and "5 stars no longer want to go to the same school as other 5 stars." "Recruiting has changed!" they said. And, one of my all time favorites was: "You can't judge a player by his ranking. Rankings are basically meaningless."

Ferguson might be one of the biggest drop offs in recruit-nik history. Top ten in the coutnry as a Soph to FIU and lower points beyond.....

Isn't this thread a little like sticking your finger in a light socket to remind yourself not to stick a finger in the light socket.

If those rumors were true I still thing Harrelson should have dropped a turtle. I'll just leave that comment hanging . . .

UK won 7 national championships before John Calipari got here. You can go back into history as far as you want and find unsuccessful UK players and potential recruits to pick on, because plenty of them existed here in the 1960s and 70s too. The important point here is that Calipari is changing college basketball and driving the public discourse on rules that govern the transition of amateur basketball players to the NBA. Calipari could not have done that in Memphis. So this is a symbiotic relationship. UK has given a huge boost to Calipari's coaching career, and Calipari has improved UK's basketball program. But there have been other times in history when UK basketball was at the national pinnacle. Let's live in the present and enjoy it while it lasts.

Well Ferguson was #4 in his class when he committed and pretty much everyone was stoked when he verballed to UK. Why he fell off a cliff soon after committing is the mystery.

The rest were just not that good.

And because of that , we didn't have a scholarship to offer Lofton .

YES!!! That dubious list leaves me just completely shaking my head in wonderment. Coach Cal is, in fact, the most amazing recruiter in the history of college sports...maybe only Geno is in the same league. But this list shows just how inexplicably low the expectations had become. Wow!

Would anyone care to offer any insight into who any of those players were, where they ended up going to school, and how they did for the schools they played for? Were they ever expected to be big shots when they were in high school? I've been a UK fan since I was a kid, but until Cal's time I was only a game time fan.

The beginning of the end of Tubby Smith.....
Sheray Thomas
Shagari Alleyne
Bobby Perry
Lukasz Orbzut

This was the recruiting class replacing Hawkins, Fitch and Daniels with Chuck Hayes going into his senior year.
We went on that year to lose to UAB in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
It was a slow, leaky tire from here on out.
To be fair, Bobby perry had a couple decent last seasons. The rest were bad.

I loved Perry but he was more of a role player. But, for some reason, he was a main target in recruiting for us and that I never understood. Had he played for one of Cal's teams, he would've gotten some minutes but would never have been expected to carry the team.

I think I feel a little sick remembering those names
While I'm sure they're great kids and all - they should never been offered at a school the caliber of Kentucky
talk about dodging a bullet

Michael Avery ended up at the local D2 school out here, Sonoma St. Graduated last year, started 3 games a senior and averaged roughly 5 pts per game.

The same Sonoma State that just won 63-54 over the Academy of Art this week.

Not knocking the kid, I hear his a great kid and any of us wouldve taken a UK offer if we had it. Just shows how out of touch BCG was.

No Kidding. I'm from Huntington, WV and I'm just glad Tubby somehow pulled Patrick Patterson to Kentucky instead of Duke or Florida.

Forget Drunkespie, that was just an awful freaking garbage hire by Barney - for which he's lucky he didn't lose his job.

More controversial was Phase II Tubby. Tubby actually did pretty well in the first couple of years after Pitino, but then he just went on cruise control, and didn't transition well to the new recruiting era.

Hope Tubby does well at Memphis
