Just saw something where all MS counties will be wet by default starting 2021. They will have to vote to change it dry. Long overdue.
Now if we could just get wine sales in grocery stores, we'll really be in good shape.
At this point I want to stay just because it creates local jobs and money. All package store owners live in MS. They spend money in MS. If we switch to grocery stores corporations now get that money. Piss on Kroger.
Agreed. But at worst, it's a step forward.Terrible article. Only thing that changes is now possession is legal in dry counties. Rankin County is still dry for sale of spirits. Until HB1087 it was technically illegal to buy wine in Jackson and bring it to your home in Flowood. Crazy how misguided that article is.

View attachment 16687 Yes, this is about a 1 mile stretch in Gulf Breeze. Can confirm, states with grocery wine sales still have liquor stores
I see the Northeast Mississippi Meth Lobby is still strong. Been trying to take out Lee County for a long time.
Why does Rankin show dry? Even in the county, many gas stations (in the Rez area) sell beer.
I am definitely not an expert, but I really don't see wine going to grocery putting liquor stores out of business. I don't think I've ever seen a liquor store go out of business for any reason.
ETA: What percentage of a liquor store's sales in in wine rather than liquor? I suspect the real reason we can't get this changed is that it would cut out the state and their absolute monopoly on liquor and wine prices and sales.
Lot’s of liquor, a Naval Air Base, and 2 Air Force bases are key ingredients.
They can buy liquor on base, cheap.
Are you saying we can ship wine now?
You can make the same argument for why we shouldn't allow walmart, costco, etc.
The current set up is better for me personally, b/c selling in grocery stores will likely result in a more limited selection past the barefoot, yellowtail type wines just because of limited shelf space in existing stores.
Wal*Mart here sells several $20-30 range wines and Costco sells many, $20-50 range.
Meanwhile, ABC stores are thriving. Local Beer sales are up over 20% thanks to Covid. Most grocery stores have good selection of wines and craft beer. Most have walk-in coolers.
