Check my maths, but I believe Saturday was the lowest attendance for a home SEC game since Croom's last home game.

As I said in another thread a couple weeks ago, the fact that Mississippi State put the number of people in the stands that it does is more impressive than any other number on that board, State and OM both. Every other team on that board plays on a metropolitan area 6-8 times the size of their capacity. Meaning they can fill their respective stadiums solely by folks that can sleep in their own bed, have a meal, and sleep in their beds again that night. Starkville and Oxford are in market sizes MAYBE twice their capacity, if it’s that much.

It takes a much bigger commitment for our fans to show up in those numbers than any team in the league, and probably the whole Southeast. That’s why we should forget the build it bigger ideas for DWS and the Dude. Instead use that money to enhance fan’s experiences. Give them something in return for that commitment. Yes everyone that wants to won’t be able to come to every game, but that’s life. We have enough smaller foes that visit to give everyone a chance to enjoy the atmosphere.

It’s also impressive how the smallest SEC state by population supports two SEC schools. 3% of Mississippi’s population attended an SEC game week 2. Only the state of Alabama is better at 4% of the state attending an SEC game this past week. Arkansas and LSU, for example, are the only shows in town for the most part.

While everything you are saying is true, it was just as true in 2018 and 2019 when we were still getting 55k+ in there most games to also watch a bad product.

The effect of the pandemic can’t be denied. It was always going to hurt the small fanbases the worst, because those are the ones that are going above and beyond as it is. Forcing 40,000 of our fans that were at every game every year to take a year off hurts big time, because half of them will likely never be back on that regular of a basis, and trying to replace that many folks at the same price point as before is a huge challenge for our athletic department.

Pandemic or not, losing to Memphis and kicking off pre-noon kept 10,000 people out of those seats, minimum.

It all gets back to the product on the field. I'm surprised we drew 50,000 Saturday. But if/when there's some excitement about the program again, we'll be drawing 55,000 regularly again.

No it doesn’t. If it was all about the product on the field, Ole Miss wouldn’t be going through the same **** we are. They only had like 50k at their last home game. And furthermore, we wouldn’t have been drawing so much better under Moorhead either.

Too late now, but we need smaller and ultra premium

Perfect world: blow up DWS, 45k expandable with loads of chairbacks, suites, premium deck, close to field seating, and upper deck awnings to keep in the cowbell clang. Probably Minnesota's stadium with more skybox / club level.

Our current setup is the opposite of this and kills game day experience outside of a nighttime full house.

Is what it is. I'm just dreaming.

I went to the KState game in 2019. There is no way there was 50k actually butts in the seats. I would say that KState crowd was close to the NcSt crowd.

but I agree. Attendance is dropping across the nation.

edit to add: I've seen many pics from the OM v Austin Peay and Tulane game. There was not 54k there. That place was empty.

When they show upper decks in all those stadium they have a bunch of emptying seats. Those stadiums are not 100% full.

I work with people from all the SEC states. One guy when I first met him just kept going on about how bad Miss State was. This went on for about four days. He just graduated from South Carolina. He was young and was joking but he did not under stand there comes a point when it is no longer joking. The breaking point was when he asked how big our stadium was. This was before the stadium was bowled in. I said around 53K or so. Then he went on to say how big thier stadium was. At that point I just pointed out how big Columbia was compared to Starkville. I told him they 700k people and Starkville had around 20K and asked him which school was doing a better job. He shut up.

I have had season tickets in section 20, O2 and 04. I just moved to section 308 roll two. Those are the chairbacks in the upper west side. Best seats I have ever sat in at Davis Stadium. I am really happy I moved up there. Those seat are really comfortable and I can see the entire field. The only down side I can see the open receivers down fields and interceptions before they happen.

I don’t know what the numbers were for Saturday but I was impressed with the crowd, especially in lower bowl and the student section.
There have been a lot of times over the years we get an 11 or 11:30 kick and the student section is half full at best.
Crowd was alive and making noise too.

I can usually judge the crowd by my parking lot - and it was absolutely packed. To me, that says the season ticket holders are showing up. So maybe just not much interest from anyone outside the normal diehard fans.

Plenty of people in the Junction taking up parking spaces but not supporting the team. Not sure how accurate using parking is.
