You really believe that? If we don’t go zone against Arkansas we lose like we did to usc. The easy branch is 1 title with all the talent we’ve had since cal came but I’m not going there. Loooking ahead no zone we get put out of the NCAA the first weekend
The easy branch is that he's ahead of the per decade pace in every conceivable category over the best program in history.

The easy branch is that he's putting together the best teams he can, but he can't force kids to stay (including some who have zero business leaving), and that means that his talent advantage is always mitigated by having one of the 10 youngest teams in the country. And if he recruited kids who were guaranteed to stay for four years with no ability to leave for the league, you guys would ***** about that too. Hell, you guys even talk **** about guys like Montgomery and Richards who have lots of talent but take time to adjust.

The easy branch if the one I whack you with.

Back to the cave with you.

What is the fascination with zone defense? If it is so efficient then why does 1 school (Syracuse) only primarily use it as the main defense. If it was so much more effective more would focus on it.

Also, speaking of certainty on what games would be won or lost without zone is only an opinion considering there is no way of knowing if it's true. You cant prove whether the freshman would again go full steam on defense shut down Arkansas and win or not. It's nice to debate differences in game plans but calling a HOF coach prideful because he doesnt do what you think is the best is a little condescending of you to say.

Since you have said you coached at a high level, care to elaborate? I'm always interested in learning peoples backgrounds on here.

No one says it should be the main defense, but when you're getting demolished off the dribble it doesnt hurt to throw it in for a few minutes a half, and it definitely shouldn't be abandoned because one highly contested 3 falls.

I don't keep up with it, but how many games have we given up 80 points this season?

I believe only twice and it is in 2 of the last 3 games. Not a good trend this time of year.

Edit

It was actually 1 time but the other was 79. For some reason I thought Georgia hit 80. Still to many points to give up. Both teams scored above their averages with USC scoring a staggering 11 more than their average.

I do think Cal should use a zone more often to throw people off a little. But to use it over 50% of the time is absolutely ridiculous.

Don't get this whole "pride" issue. Seems like when fans don't agree or don't understanding the big picture, they just point the finger at the "pride" of a coach.

just silly.
I was thinking stupid more than silly to be honest

Let’s see... we just gave up near 80 to a bad uga team. Gave up 80 to an absolutely putrid uscjr team last week.
Lets see we are 14-4, 5-1 in the SEC and have won 6 of 7.
Lets see we have wins v then #1 Michigan St., then #3 U of L and an Arkansas team on the road who was 14-2 and was10-0 at home until we whooped dat ***.

Our 4 Ls are by 3 pts., 3 pts., 6 pts. and 3 pts.

Thats 5 possessions away from potentially being unbeaten.

But lets shiz ourselves because we beat Georgia by double digits.

Exactly. Zero wrong with playing a few possessions of zone throughout a game. 50/50 might be a bit much but I liked it again tonight. Edwards with a tough contested 3 doesn’t change anything.

Didn’t happen. The sideline reporter said don’t be surprised if they go zone. Maxey wasn’t in a zonal defending position on that shot. Not to mention no team will zone intentionally one trip.

yea and I thought the sideline reporter was an idiot when he was saying it cuz they were in a zone at that very instance

Yet we are 30ish in net rankings which translates to a 5-6 seed. We aren’t doing squat from a crappy seed who gives up 81 and 79 in one week to two sec bottom feeders. The game in between we win bc of zone.

You 'we must play some zone every game' guys, at this time of the year, just dont get what's going on with a Cal coached team. Your ego says we must do whatever it takes to win games now because I hate to lose games. Cal says we must get better each game by playing the most challenging way so we can be our best at the end of the season AND while trying to also win games. Same with minutes for players like EJ and to a lesser extent Whitney. It's about the tourney isn't it and not your ego needing to win every game possible? You can't imagine what Cal has to balance in these conditions.

The OP said "ATLEAST50/50"... that's the main defense, man. If he said a few possessions per game it be different argument.

People that think zone is the answer have never played basketball.

This times 1000

It’s really laughable sometimes the loudest whiners are clearly the ones who know literally less about basketball than my dog.

I knew after a nice win where the guys played well and a couple players who we have been waiting to have breakout games started to show some signs I could count on Rafters to be scattered with posts about playing zone or the wrong player starting.

All from the familiar contingent of posters who I used to think had an agenda, but now I more and more agree with the poster that they have zero basketball IQ. Some of them at least. Others have a clear agenda.

We have another poster gunning for the spot of scrooduke92 for worst here. About 12 posters here who will never be happy with any game Cal coaches. Even if we win another Natty they will complain we didn’t win by 20 or play zone.

You have zero insight about anything. My least favorite poster bar none and that’s saying a lot. But I’m gonna move on now and not address you any longer.
