A run first oriented team. I’d say 65-35 type of ratio. Really liked our freshman O-Lineman tonight. A strong run game will open up our passing as well.
I hope we make this adjustment this off-season.
In the end it will be Scott adapting to the B10 but who cares, I just want to win.

Ah, the finest music to my ears! I'm betting HCSF is with you.

Couldn't agree more! If we had this game plane last week, we're 4-4 right now. Better late than never I guess.

I'd agree with you if our OL could figure out how to block someone before the last game of the year. Also would be nice to have a defense we can rely on if yards on the ground are hard to come by.

Play calling was a little better tonight. I’m still not a fan of running so much out of the gun. But I am a fan of the way they finished that game

The way we played in the second half is the blue print. Diverse run game, stuck with it, chunk play off play action. That is how we need to play offense.

I still want to see some screens and bootlegs. We'd totally get teams fooled since we never do them.

I gotta think that will only get better. We played 3 freshman against a pretty solid D-line. Corcoran was a stud. Saw a few pancakes from him.
Running the ball will also run the clock which will keep our defense fresh or on the bench.

There was one pancake by Corcoran that really got me going. I can't remember exactly what play but to see a big #69 pancake what looked to be a linebacker made my night for sure.

I agree. The run opened up the passing game too. It seemed to flow naturally.

We said that last year too. The OL was supposed to be massively improved. The OL isn't going to get better until we get better coaching.

We’ll see, and you could very well be right. But a lot of our issues came from 3 players:
Jurgens snaps (he’s seemed to improve)
Benhart/Piper (holding calls, some were phantom)
Farniok allowing sacks

The last one is gone, the freshman will improve. Jurgens I’m not sure what to think.

Frost gave up in the 2nd half, but in a good way. He gave up trying to be the Chessmaster that he isn't and gave the game to the players on the field to just do their thing. Hopefully that approach will last.

Agreed. The second half was vintage HUSKER football. Steady dose of “option”/zone read getting lots of yards on the ground with a well time mix of pass completion. If only we could do that every game we may have several more wins. Scott, for the love of God, when you play a team that you clearly have an athletic advantage, don’t get cute. Just line up and beat them. If we had done that against Northwestern, Illinois and Iowa, we may have won those games.

Fully agree. Maybe center is where Jurgens doesn't want to be?

I commented on the second half thread that is was refreshing to see so many Rutgers defensive players down on the turf after the play that needed help to the sideline. It reminded me of the good old days in the 80's and 90's. We used to beat the crap out of opposing teams every week.

I completely agree but this gives me a reminder of that one game Mike Riley had against I believe UCLA where we ran it for hundreds of yards and looked amazing and then we never did that again

Pistol formation for better downhill running was a welcome sight. Needs to be our regular formation immediately starting next season!

i liked that too. Again, vintage HUSKER football. You could tell by the end of the third quarter that we were really starting to lean on them. By the 4th quarter they were gassed and we were able to take over and put the game away.

We all know the answer to this. Scott wants to be creative and win HIS way.

We said the same thing last year when they started running Mills and having success late in the year. Then what happened....this year started and he went back to the same ole "chessmaster" evil genius mode cuz that's who he is.

You play teams that are inferior you are supposed to smash them. We have more talent than 10 out of 14 teams in the B1G.

The only way Scott coaches to win by any means is if he is on the 🔥 SEAT. Any other coach at any other school with his record would be. Unfortunately he isn't...

That’s the ticket to be successful in the Big10. Its all about running the ball and being able to stop the run. If you can do that and put 85% of your energy and resources to those 2 things, you will be successful in this conference. Frost knows this by now, but its obvious he still thinks he can run the Oregon offense and a mediocre defense which just isn’t going to work in this conference. Big 12 and Pac 12 absolutely, go run this offense for a team there. The big ten prides itself on solid defense, line play, and running the rock. He’s obviously still trying to go against the grain and it’s biting him in the ***

The success early running the ball most definitely opened up the passing game very quickly IMO. Pound them up the middle a few plays then hit them with play action. Most effective trick in the playbook. It was good to see them stick with the run when we were down.

Can someone tell me how Rutgers' size in their front 7 compares to most teams in the conference?

I like using the run to establish the pass, but with the number of teams we face of superior size and ability on defense compared to Rutgers, it won't be a cake walk like last night's second half was.

I think the size of our O line will match up nicely next year in the B1G. That said, it will be more about execution and play calling next year IMO than the size of the opponent's d line.

Definitely. Hopefully our linemen learn through this year about the importance of attention to detail in their work (maybe even avoid some holding penalties away from the point of attack as well Winking).

Would be nice, but SF is like a socialist/communist. Doesnt matter how much it doesnt work, theres always other factors to blame. It just looks too good on paper and sounds too good to change.

They were absolutely screens. WR screens, and I commented as such to my wife. We haven’t run screens at all this year. It was beautiful to see.

I beg to differ. I counted about 10-12 swing passes to Mills or Wandale. I recorded the game and saw no screens.

The closest to be screens were:
2nd Q, 2:00 min 3rd5 Mills got 6 yrards with swing pass out in the flat, OL active blocking nothing disguiesed.
3rd Q 11:37 min 3rd 9 swing pass out in the flat to Wandale
3rd Q 5:24 min 2nd 6 broken play, active OL blocking nothing disguised, shuffle pass to Wandale
4th Q 5:26 min 2nd 6 quick swing pass to Wandale out in the flats
4th Q 4:47 min 3 rd 2 swing pass to Mills out in the flats, nothing disguised.
