Watching the Final Drive on BTN
1. Was watching some guys we wanted but did not get play some pretty good football, Westerkamp from Nebraska (think he would have helped the passing game, reminds me of Ebert) and Peppers from Michigan. He is a game changer on both sides of the ball. If he stays and plays all 4 years I think he will get a Heisman
2. As nice as it would have been to have those two guys watching the Michigan State and Ohio State highlights it seems to come down to the offensive and defensive lines. Last year we had a D-Line that was able to win their battles. This year does not appear that either line is winning battles consistently. We talk a lot about the wide receiver corp not being sufficient but why are we not producing winning o-lines?
3. Watching Denardo comment on OSU qb Barret, stating that the defense has to account for him on every play makes me think that you have to have a qb who can throw and is at least a threat to run. After last year I thought maybe Thorson was a true dual threat. He had some impressive touchdown runs. This year he does not look like a running threat and I doubt that defenses are spending any extra defensive players accounting for him.
4. In the Wisconsin game, down to Georgia St (Southern?) UW brought in a freshman qb who is a better running threat. He led them to the winning drive. Do not see anything wrong with giving ALviti some plays at qb if it would help open up more running lanes for JJ

Peppers was only the #1 recruit in the country coming out of high school. He had offers from everyone. NU never had a serious shot at him.

I would like to see more of Alviti, but from what I've seen of him throw the ball, it's a disaster. What I'd actually like to see is him get more reps in garbage time, if and when we have games where we have such a luxury.

The thing that stood out to me on the Final Drive was Urban's post game interview, where he attributed the win to winning the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball...just a friendly reminder of what a championship-caliber coach thinks and says is most important.

Only the OL can open lanes for JJ. Wisky has a much better OL so it is not surprising that a running QB would have success.

I saw that.

Watching that game makes you appreciate how successful coaches adapt. Couple of years ago, Saban was bitching and moaning about "go fast" offenses, saying they were dangerous to the players. Yesterday, he used a "go fast" offense himself. Must not have gotten the part of the coaching book about being "true to your identity"......;)

Grant Perry had a nice game for UM.
Ty Issac seems to get into the UM games in the 4th quarter but not just because it is garbage time. I think he can take advantage of a tired defense. Hopefully we get the same kind of support when Long comes back.

Problem is there hasn't been any garbage time and as far as him throwing the ball, he has not had one throw this year so how would you know? Last year is last year and he supposedly has improved.

Forgot all about him,,,but think of Perry and Westerkamp.....or without an o-line would it make a difference (chicken and egg.?) I though I remember Peppers giving NU some consideration. Anyway nice to get a win.

It always comes down to line play and our OL has not been good. DL was very solid last year and while not as bad as the OL, it has taken a pretty big step back,

We were also right in the thick of things for Chesson, though I don't think Peppers ever really considered NU.

If Perry had stuck with NU, we wouldn't have Nagel; don't know if it is a true wash, but it definitely was an "either/or" situation.

Nagel looked pretty solid fielding punts yesterday. It's nice to have someone back there who actually fields punts and doesn't drop them.

LOL, the kid they brought in , Alex Hornibrook , isn't much of a runner at all, probably not as good as Bart Houston, who he replaced.
Didn't run with it at all, He can throw though and did.

Yes. He was there for the taking if NU wanted him. Problem was he was judged by major schools to have baggage - meddlesome parents, selfish attitude, tainted receiving record [ran up score and receiving yardage against crappy team] etc.) and consequently he received hardly any offers. He signed with SMU and left after one season because his receivers coach left. He transferred to BGSU for three years and made a number of highlight reel catches as one of the best WR's in the MAC.
