UNC/UVA to the SEC?

Simple fact of the matter is no one brings the massive South Florida market (and good portions of Central FL too) like Miami. It's a ton of value added and UM will end up in either the SEC or the B1G (regardless of AAU affiliation -- like it doesn't matter for ND).

BIG president’s and AD’s might just want to add Miami so they can go to some road games down there in the winter.
That was one of the rumors why the big east added usf years ago

It's funny. People in NJ think Rutgers is much worse than it is academically. And Rutgers grads act like it is much better than it is. Reality is somewhere in between. UNC and UVA are much better fits in the B1G, but at this point there are only so many golden tickets left and you take what you can get (assuming they could get out). If no B1G offer is available, they would be crazy to turn down the SEC. And it is every school for themselves right now. The idea that politics is going to hold anything up anymore is silly. Just look at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. If politics didn't stop that, it isn't going to impact Washington or Oregon or UNC while their futures are at stake just to protect little brother. Same goes for old alliances. If UNC can move and no one wants little private school Duke, so be it. Schools are acting in their own interests and that is all that matters anymore. If you can come as a package and retain old rivalries great, but that isn't the driving force anymore. Not to mention, who outside of ND has that kind of juice? The B1G and SEC control the narrative, not the remaining schools who have zero leverage. The risk of being left out is far too great. It's about self preservation
All of this better or worse academically is a bunch of nonsense. There is an upper echelon of public universities, and Cal, UCLA, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas and maybe a few others are in that club, which might include University of Florida. After that, the judgments are mostly subjective and based on perceptions of prestige. Also, certain schools such as Georgia Tech and Purdue are very strong in engineering/STEM, but they may be weaker than "lower ranked" schools in humanities, business or other subjects.

Knew about A & M and UF, surprised to hear about UGA
Georgia had a governor in the 90s that started a tuition program funded by the state lottery. In state tuition is free for an undergraduate public school for students that graduate with a 3.7 GPA (unweighted) in core academic classes, and 90% of tuition paid if they graduate with a 3.0 GPA. That kept a lot more kids looking to stay in state and it is now quite difficult to get into UGA.

If I’m a 5 star and they offer w Kirby, recent success, Southern talent and the NIL $$, it’d been hard to say no

...and what will becomes of the sports (boys and girls lax, field hockey, wrestling) that the SEC does not have but the ACC does have?

After learning that USC/UCLA came TO Kevin Warren -- I really hope he doesn't mess this situation up. Whether a rumor or not, letting UNC go to SEC over B1G would be awful. And Kratch is right, ESPN would do whatever it takes to keep UNC/UVA away from B1G/Fox.

ESPN won't let Fox win the day. They'll push SEC to expand. B1G has to beat em to the punch.

Wow! A politician who actually used the lottery for education instead of a slush fund. Good on him for using the funds as they were intended to be used.

UNC and UVA would be horrible academic fits in the SEC. Vanderbilt should be left by their lonesome in that regard. They are much better fits in the B1G.
No one should still be laboring under the belief that any of this has anything to do with academics, even if the presidents and communications offices are ratcheting up the "academics" and "student-athlete" rhetoric to offset the pure farce that teams routinely traveling coast-to-coast for league games in some way enhances the students' academic experience.

Their nerve and shamelessness is almost breathtaking at this point. It's all and only about maximizing media revenue, at least beyond any political maneuvering by state legislatures. To the extent that institutions are aligned academically, it's a wonderful coincidence that helps perpetuate the propaganda.

Disagree Source….academics matter to varying degrees to the individual schools (individual presidents, Boards, alumni, etc.).

I don't get these notions that ESPN will do something that will cost them more money. I'll have to see it to believe it. They have these schools and properties at a good price and they're going to take action to increase that price and cost themselves more money? Who gives up a bargain? I don't see the motivation.

I'll use the precedent of CBS. They've had the SEC GOTW at a bargain price of 50M/yr and ESPN is now going to pay 300M/yr. At any time did CBS look to up or renegotiate that price with the SEC, including when they added Mizzou/A&M. The SEC wanted them to but CBS didn't. Instead it has wrung every last dollar out of the that bargain til the end. They'll cross the bridge when they come to it, hence the B10 offer for that timeslot.

How about the moves for Texas/OU. Has ESPN helped them out of their GOR to move over sooner as was talked about last year when the move was announced...."oh ESPN will help get them out of it" etc...nope haven't seen it yet. Even if they did by some chance get out if it, it would be on their own not because ESPN decided to pay hundreds of millions to help them.

This is the SEC a more valuable and influential property. They've gotten no help to get out of or renegotiate their CBS contract or move Texas/OU over sooner. So why would ESPN or any network spend hundreds of millions to help the ACC a property lower down the totem pole. They're in a business not charity, on top of which the days of spending like a drunken sailor for anything and everything are gone.
You know on top of all these financial reasons why it doesn't make sense for ESPN to break up the ACC, is the reason that's been said all along.

If the ACC collapses that only forces ND to go to the B10. We all think that's the GOR expiration time in the 2030s. Why would ESPN do something to push ND into the B10's arms sooner than that. I mean there will likely always be a path for ND in whatever playoff format they come up with because the SEC/ESPN wouldn't want to force ND into the B10 by locking them out of the playoffs. So why would they want to break up the ACC before the mid 2030s?

UNC I could see ( expands the SEC footprint and another good brand) but UVA no way. If the SEC wants to get into Virginia, VT a better fit

Stop with the UVa bull crap. The B10 & SEC don’t want them. They bring nothing other than less money for the other schools. Someone present a cogent argument for the addition of UVA . “Oh they’re between MD and NC and have a nice campus, Moose”

That’s not the reason.

The academic super conference is the driver far more than you guys think. It’s how the B1G separates itself from SEC. It’s how every president and BOT gets on-board. It’s how the B1G is around not just for a TV cycle, but generations.

UNC is the prize. And they want a partner in the south. Personally, I think it’ll still be Duke. But headwinds are stronger for UVA. Locking down two growing state schools with excellent academics/research/md school is the goal.

Sandwiching DC with UVA and MD gives B1G legislative power, which becomes significant as things more forward.

I also have never stated that UVA is the immediate move. B1G is clearly going west, because they won’t leave USC/UCLA on an island. But southern expansion is important to them too. Whether we like it or not, B1G and SEC are moving to superconference/league. Only southern AAU teams they can choose from are UNC/UVA/DUKE/GTECH. So yeahhhhh, it puts UVA in rare company.

UVA is like Rutgers. We certainly didn’t bring athletic or brand value to B1G. It was the combination of potential and serving the B1G alumni/subscribers in tri-state area. B1G would not be recruiting UVA for their sports (like RU) — they’re recruiting to lock down the states of North Carolina and Virginia for decades of growth.

All of this is also why they’re not going to leave Stanford on sidelines, and is likely the top expansion choice from Pac-12. They’re being dangled as a carrot for Notre Dame right now, because B1G doesn’t want to expand with odd numbers. Another reason why B1G’s long-sought prize of UNC (Delaney wanted them badly) would want a partner — Duke or UVA.

Also, despite how crazy it may sound, UVA is almost certainly higher on the pecking order than Oregon for 1 big statistic difference.

Oregon Population: ~4M
Virginia Population: ~8.5M

And for comparison
North Carolina: ~10.5M
Maryland: ~6M
Washington: ~8M

I think Washington is Stanford’s partner if ND balks. And Washington would be above UVA, because of Seattle, western push, and insane research dollars.

Good Brands like Oregon have added marketing value — of course. But getting UVA & UNC locks down TV/internet sets for 19M people. Right now, the only people in NC/UVA who want a B1G tv subscription are B1G fans that moved there.

Notre Dame’s the big whale, because it pushes B1G network nationwide, and helps gel developing markets. ie a casual UNC fan who wants to watch UNC v. ND

I think they will be. Sure, people saying it’ll be Wash & Oregon — but my money would be on Stanford, Wash, Cal.

Tough deciding between Washington and Cal if you HAD to, but B1G/Fox has the metrics that we can’t see. And tbh, I don’t think any of those 3 get left out.

Stanford’s 38B endowment plus prestige plus silicon valley puts them a hair above Cal, but Cal’s a big prize too.

USC & UCLA had to do first move to get the gears going. And I think drama queen ND is holding everything up. USC/UCLA were no brainers.

Adding Stanford, Cal, Washington would instantly make B1G the Ivy League of Division 1 sports. But I think B1G needs a splash team to round out the expansion with weaker football brands.

Some of the Rutgers academic snobbery dates to us old Rutgers College grads.
At my freshman orientation we were told our class had the second highest academic profile of any state college/university, behind only Cal Berkeley. Some of my grad school mates thought Rutgers was an Ivy. It seemed the farther west from NJ you went the greater was the Rutgers rep.

They'll be going to the SEC right after Kansas joins the Big 10!
The Big Ten absolutely should invite Kansas and just pay them less until the next contract comes along. UVa and UNC too. Get ND in there (since the ACC will at that point be on its way to death) and then you can worry about which 4 Western teams to add to get a 24.

Kansas brings almost nothing compared to other options and you can get Kansas at any time. They already have a place and aren’t going anywhere. No reason to cut the pie into another share unless they are coming in as Notre Dame’s partner.

Listen I know UVA isn’t a football juggernaut but they have numerous NCAA championships including one in basketball and Virginia is a growing state with a population similar to NJ. sorry but Rutgers isn’t UVA in sports or academics
