Stop with the UVa bull crap. The B10 & SEC don’t want them. They bring nothing other than less money for the other schools. Someone present a cogent argument for the addition of UVA . “Oh they’re between MD and NC and have a nice campus, Moose”
That’s not the reason.
The academic super conference is the driver far more than you guys think. It’s how the B1G separates itself from SEC. It’s how every president and BOT gets on-board. It’s how the B1G is around not just for a TV cycle, but generations.
UNC is the prize. And they want a partner in the south. Personally, I think it’ll still be Duke. But headwinds are stronger for UVA. Locking down two growing state schools with excellent academics/research/md school is the goal.
Sandwiching DC with UVA and MD gives B1G legislative power, which becomes significant as things more forward.
I also have never stated that UVA is the immediate move. B1G is clearly going west, because they won’t leave USC/UCLA on an island. But southern expansion is important to them too. Whether we like it or not, B1G and SEC are moving to superconference/league. Only southern AAU teams they can choose from are UNC/UVA/DUKE/GTECH. So yeahhhhh, it puts UVA in rare company.
UVA is like Rutgers. We certainly didn’t bring athletic or brand value to B1G. It was the combination of potential and serving the B1G alumni/subscribers in tri-state area. B1G would not be recruiting UVA for their sports (like RU) — they’re recruiting to lock down the states of North Carolina and Virginia for decades of growth.
All of this is also why they’re not going to leave Stanford on sidelines, and is likely the top expansion choice from Pac-12. They’re being dangled as a carrot for Notre Dame right now, because B1G doesn’t want to expand with odd numbers. Another reason why B1G’s long-sought prize of UNC (Delaney wanted them badly) would want a partner — Duke or UVA.
