My dad called me today to ask me to help a friend's son get into the company I work at (we get 2 million applicants a year).

Me: "Sure thing - where did he graduate from?"
Dad: "Chapel Hill"
Me: "lolololololol. We don't need any more janitors at the moment"
Dad: "What?"
Me: "We don't hire from schools that have fake classes"

Needless to say it's a very good family friend - but there's no way in hell I'm recommending this kid. Dad is insistent and wants me to talk to him....... I want to absolutely blast him..... but will burn a bridge if I do.

What is the degree in? Check his transcripts and if he didn't take AFAM then he is likely a legitimate student and the crimes of their athletics shouldn't be held against him imo.

It's a solid school outside of the corrupt program they established to keep athletes eligible and that didn't affect 90% of the student body.

Guilt by association? Isn't the entire school on SACS probation?

Actually UNC is a good academic school (other than the obvious AFAM program), one of the top state schools in the country.

So, reject an applicant solely because they went to a school whose sports programs you don't like. Sounds like solid a business practice.

Naval courses had problems too, didn’t Boxill give out grades for her classes also? I think UNC has built their academic reputation on propaganda, much like they pumped media lies about how clean their sports programs were. It seems to be their m.o. to tell everyone how great they are and it ultimately gets accepted as fact because nobody questions it. They were on academic probation because they chose to protect a sports program, we're talking about university leadership actively throwing academics under the bus to shield a basketball team.

Does that sound like a school that should be considered with such high academic regard? No it shouldn’t, so how do we know other departments aren’t lax as well? We can only base a solid opinion on the behavior they’ve portrayed and it ain’t scholarly. They said it was an academics issue and not related to sports, I would question any degree put out by UNC. A degree from chapel hill is tainted right now.

I wouldn't do that just because he graduated from a rival school or because of the scandal

I hired a Duke graduate yesterday

Do you know why the kid went to UNC? Your dad is asking you for a favor. Why would you not at least talk to the kid for your dad? Seems petty on your part to hold what the athletic department did over the guy. Doubtful he played sports there.

I'd at least meet the guy. Why? Well to satisfy your dad. Just meet with him and then tell your dad he is a dumbass and you can't take the chance on this guy ending up getting fired. Tell your dad that he insulted you by talking bad about UK. I know, I know maybe that may seem to be a little mean, but who cares.

The bigger question is how well you know him and can you vouch for his work? If I cannot do that, then I generally do not recommend anyone

Actually it is a school that willingly gave up its reputation to keep a couple of banners

Actually, as a hiring manager that works within 20 miles from UNC for the past 20+ years, AND as a father that will be sending my kid to college in 2 years and can get in-state tuition to both UK and UNC, I'm pretty sure I'm more knowledgeable on the subject than you.

Except the corruption was also in other parts of the university as well. For example, we know that there were fake ethics classes. Peppers got an A in Feminist Studies. Then, there was that Naval class.....probably many many more.

Before I retired I was a CPA and a Comptroller at a major health insurer. Anytime I received a resume from a UL grad I tossed it in file 13. Never received many since I worked in Alabama but when I did they went straight to the trash.

Every school has a few bunny classes, typically in the subjective liberal arts / communications area. The problem was the AFAM program at UNCheat took that to a whole other level.

These were not bunny classes. They were fraudulent. We know it extended to other parts of the university but we don't know how far because UNC didn't want to investigate.
