Our offense was pretty bad in 1998 and '99
This is worse. Mainly, I think because it has building to this point for four years now.

Thorson is not the problem.Just rewatched the game. Will type up all my thoughts in a separate post, but I continue to maintain Thorson isn't the problem. At all. I counted 2-3 poor throws and a couple bad decisions. Otherwise, I don't think he was bad at all.
Tough sell when you're playing teams that most people expect you to beat.
It's funny how every apologist is coming on here now to tout WMU as a MAC powerhouse and to remind us that ISU will make the FCS playoffs.
Didn't everybody pretty much predict Ws in those prediction threads?
Bob Bostad? Currently TE/FB coach at NIU after turns as OL coach with the Titans and Buccaneers.
How in the world could you say this?
We look TERRIBLE and our Offense is bad. It's so unimaginative, buddies and I can watch the game together and call the plays with 80ish% accuracy. That's really bad.
Just watch other teams around CFB and you can't help but notice how bad our offensive preparation and playing calling is. It's been a historical trend for YEARS. That falls on the individual responsible for the offense. McCall has got to go.
This is a potentially bad argument but I'll make it anyway. I'm a Colorado guy and a Broncos fan. As you know, Trevor Siemian was named as the starter. I watched the Broncos v. Panthers this week and was STUNNED. Trevor didn't even look like the same quarterback. His decision making, throws, and overall command of the offense were very good. He looked like he belonged in the NFL and belonged as the starter. Granted it's one game and I'll caveat that Denver has better receivers and offensive line. However, the development of Siemian is stark. If you read articles talking about Siemian quoting people from the entire Broncos organization, they ALL say they believe he is the real deal. He was never bad in college but he certainly wasn't great either, he was okay. He often made some forced errors, made overthrows consistently on long balls and never looked like a true NFL guy.
It shows you what happens when a talented individual gets great play calling and very strong coaching and tutelage. Players in ALL areas of the offense do not even come close to reaching their potential under McCall.
I'd never expect us to get a Peyton Manning/John Elway type guy to provide perspective to our QBs but we can do better than McCall.
We deserve better and we should demand better.
BARNETT!
In a heartbeat. Let's not forget: the biggest problem we had with Barnett was that other teams actually wanted him... My how times have changed...Yes, I'd take a 70 year old Barnett right now.
So if NU wanted to make an offer to Bostad -- and assuming it would be enticing enough for him to take it-- is he in play after the season ends?
Would likely need to be released from his contract at NIU, which is highly unlikely.
After the season ends, I think yes.
As with most assistants, I would assume his NIU contract is year to year so no such release would be required after the season. In season, a release would be required.
I'm certainly glad we fans have that settled--that we will have a new OC. Now, who else will be replaced in our housecleaning?Well then, our new OC ( I'm assuming there will a new OC ) should have at least one good OL coaching candidate to consider. Reason for optimism at a dark time. Go ' Cats!
Gee maybe he would help the football team get an W.[/SARCASM]Yeah, he'd fit perfectly into the academic and social profile of Northwestern [/SARCASM]

I was. Some interesting names are just now popping up among the board folks. Maybe just maybe some of the deep pocketed donors will put pressure on Phillips and Fitz and positive changes will come.Willy, I actually quite like your grumpiness and for the most part make a point to read your posts with an open mind even if I might disagree with you. This one, with all due respect, I can't:
I know we're all at a pretty low ebb right now, but are you so desperate for a win at a game played between young men aged between 18-24 for our amusement that you'd advocate hiring a guy who, while in charge of a similar group of men, AT BEST looked the other way while those men that he was responsible started sexually assaulting women across campus and AT WORST actively tried to cover up those felonies so that the suspects could play football on Saturdays?
Yes, the same guy who is doing a mea-culpa tour on ESPN et al without an awful lot of mea-culpa-ing?
I'm as furious as anyone about yesterday. I want change and if that means jobs, so be it. But I'm not so desperate for change that I want to see that guy on our campus.
I hope you were being facetious Willy, I really do.

I have no confidence that this head coach would pick the right people to replace the existing offensive staff and I half expect all of the staff to be back again because what incentive does Pat have to make changes?
He's got about 2.2 million incentives a year. Contracts end and can be bought out if things get bad enough.
That would not happen.... unless, well, are you ready to root for our boys to go 0-12 or 2-10 just so he can be fired? That seems to be the opposite of being an NU fan.
Agree to disagree. If you were McCall, what imaginative calls would you make with an OL that can't block at all? If you can't run the ball and can't pass protect, what kind of offense do you run?
.
Hankwitz is 68. So 70 not that oldYes, I'd take a 70 year old Barnett right now.
